Close windows and doors, run a properly sized air cleaner if you have one, and avoid activities that add particles indoors. Conditions can change during the day, so check again before outdoor activity. For pollution from sources other than smoke, follow local alerts and advice specific to that pollutant.
Check local air quality before making plans
Open the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and check alerts from your local health or environmental agency. The map combines particle-pollution readings with fire locations, smoke plumes, smoke outlooks where available, and recommended actions. Smoke levels can change substantially during the day, so check again when deciding whether to exercise, work, or spend time outdoors.

Reduce smoke exposure outdoors
- Postpone outdoor exercise and strenuous work while smoke levels are poor. If you cannot avoid going out, reduce how long you stay outside and lower your exertion.
- If conditions improve, use the cleaner period for necessary outdoor activity, but check the map and local advisories again first.
- For essential outdoor work, take breaks in cleaner indoor air. An N95 respirator can help reduce exposure when worn properly; cloth masks do not protect against wildfire smoke. EPA recommendations also discuss N95 use in areas with wildfire smoke: Reduce Health Risks in Areas with Wildfire Smoke.
Set up a cleaner-air room
Choose a room where household members can spend much of their time. While smoke is outside, close its windows and doors, and run a portable air cleaner sized for that room continuously. AirNow explains that portable cleaners are designed for a single room or area. A properly sized HEPA-filter unit is one suitable option; it does not guarantee that a room is free of smoke or other pollutants. Do not use an air cleaner that generates ozone.
If your home has central HVAC, set the system to recirculate and close the fresh-air intake while smoke is outside. A MERV 13-or-higher filter may help only if your specific system can safely use it. Check the system’s guidance or ask a qualified HVAC professional if you are unsure; a filter that is incompatible with the system is not a safe universal upgrade. During heavy smoke, check filters and replace them if they become heavily soiled.
A box fan fitted with a filter can be a fallback if a portable cleaner is unavailable, but use care: AirNow warns that older fans can pose electrical or fire hazards. Prefer a newer fan and take particular care with older models. Do not leave a DIY fan cleaner operating unattended. AirNow’s household guidance is at Be Smoke Ready.

- Stay informed – Get an indication of current indoor air quality from the color-coded LED, and detailed information and an easy-to-understand air quality score in the Alexa app.
- Real-time alerts - Get notifications on your phone or announcements on Echo devices when Alexa detects poor indoor air quality.
- Automate climate control - Enable Routines to turn on or off your compatible Alexa devices, such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans, when the indoor air quality sensors detect changes.
Keep indoor air from getting dirtier
When smoke is heavy, avoid indoor activities that add particles or combustion pollution. Skip frying or other smoky cooking, sweeping, vacuuming, candles, smoking, fireplaces, and gas- or wood-burning appliances where possible. Choose lower-emission ways to prepare food and clean until outdoor air improves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect people who may be more affected
Fine particles in wildfire smoke can irritate the eyes and respiratory system, contribute to illnesses such as bronchitis, and aggravate chronic heart and lung disease. AirNow identifies people with asthma, COPD or other lung disease; heart disease; children and teenagers; adults generally 65 and older; and people more likely to be exposed as groups that may need extra protection. Pregnant women and people with limited access to protective measures may also face greater risk. Healthy people are usually not at major risk from short-term smoke exposure, but everyone should avoid breathing smoke where possible.
People with asthma or another lung condition should follow their clinician’s directions and prescribed plan, and contact their clinician if symptoms worsen. Follow existing medical advice for other health conditions. AirNow’s health guidance is available at Fires and Your Health.

Balance smoke protection with heat safety
Keep the cleaner-air room cool while limiting smoke indoors. If the home becomes too hot to be safe, do not stay in dangerous heat just to keep windows closed. Move to a clean-air shelter or another air-conditioned building with good filtration, or stay with friends or family if that is a safer option. Follow local news and official instructions, including any evacuation directions.

A consumer PM2.5 sensor can offer additional information about fine-particle levels indoors, but it is optional and does not replace official AQI readings or local alerts. If you consider one, check which pollutant it measures, follow the placement and use instructions, and treat its readings as context rather than a complete health assessment.
