Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart by choosing settings for how you play: local games render on the headset, while PC-streamed games also rely on the computer and wireless connection. For either mode, prioritize steady frame delivery over the highest available refresh rate, then use Steam Frame’s performance overlay to see whether a change helped. For streaming, foveated streaming may reduce wireless video demand; it does not apply to locally rendered games.
First, identify whether you are playing locally or streaming
The distinction determines which controls matter. A local game uses Steam Frame’s own rendering resources. A PC-streamed game is rendered on the computer and sent to the headset over a wireless connection, so performance depends on the PC and connection as well as headset settings. Steam Frame Lab’s independent menu guide describes foveated streaming as a streaming-side control, not a way to optimize local rendering (Steam Frame Lab).

| Play mode | What affects delivery | Foveated streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Local / standalone | Headset rendering resources and the game’s settings | Not relevant; there is no PC video stream to optimize |
| PC streaming | The PC, wireless connection, and headset’s streaming settings | Can reduce detail in peripheral areas of the streamed image |
Choose a refresh rate the game can sustain
Valve lists a 72–144 Hz refresh-rate range for Steam Frame on its product page. A higher refresh rate can provide the potential for smoother motion, but it also uses more battery and processing headroom. PC Gamer described 144 Hz as experimental and reported that higher refresh settings trade away battery life and processing capacity; available modes and behavior can change with software versions (PC Gamer).

A practical starting point is a rate the game can deliver consistently, rather than the maximum the headset offers. Steam Frame Lab recommends matching the system frame-rate limit to the selected refresh rate, then lowering both to a stable target if the game cannot hold it. That is independent guidance, not a Valve rule. Uneven frame delivery can feel worse than a lower but steady target.

Use local compatibility criteria as context, not a personal target
Valve’s local-game review criteria require a VR title to maintain at least 72 fps at 1728×1728 during normal play to meet its stated minimum performance criterion. Valve also recommends that developers provide motion vectors and depth suitable for reprojection to support optional higher refresh rates and improved reprojection techniques (Steamworks: Steam Frame compatibility). These are criteria and developer recommendations for local compatibility—not a prescription for every player, game, or PC-streamed session.
Check frame pacing before reducing image quality
Use the in-headset performance overlay to find out whether frame delivery is within budget before changing visual settings. Valve documents this path: Quick Access Menu > Performance > VR Settings > Show Perf Overlay In VR. Its graph uses colors to distinguish timing states: green means frame times are within budget; yellow means half rate; red means each frame takes more than two v-sync intervals; pink indicates a compositor GPU preemption failure (Steam Support: performance overlay and recording).

Depending on the display, the overlay can show the target game-loop rate, submitted resolution per eye, compositor time, GPU frequency, and recent average power draw. Check it before and after a change, ideally in the same part of the same game. That makes it easier to tell whether a lower limit or rendering adjustment improved pacing rather than relying on a vague impression.
Valve also documents performance recording for locally running VR applications. Recorded fields include actual FPS, peak CPU and GPU frame times, reprojected frames, refresh rate, and peak power. The documentation says recording is active only while a local VR application is running, so do not treat it as a capture tool for PC-streamed gameplay.

Adjust rendering controls for the game that needs help
Steam Frame Lab’s independent guide describes Performance-tab controls for render resolution, half-rate shading, frame-rate limit, and foveated streaming. It recommends trying a game’s own graphics settings first, then considering half-rate shading if the game remains borderline. The guide says half-rate shading can reduce GPU work, with a possible cost to fine detail. Since the visual effect depends on the title and scene, inspect the actual game rather than assuming one setting is best for all content.
For a local game
- Use the overlay to identify timing trouble before lowering image quality.
- If the game is struggling, try its in-game graphics options first; then assess whether reducing render resolution or enabling half-rate shading helps.
- Keep foveated streaming out of the local-game tuning process: it targets PC-streamed video, not the headset’s local rendering.
For a PC-streamed game
- Steam Frame Lab recommends leaving foveated streaming enabled. It directs more detail toward the area the user is looking at and less toward the periphery, reducing wireless data demand.
- Consider frame-rate limit and render-resolution changes against both the stream’s pacing and the image you actually see.
- Remember that local-game compatibility badges do not assess PC-streamed performance; the PC and wireless link introduce variables outside that review scope.
The foveated-streaming recommendation and Performance-tab descriptions above come from Steam Frame Lab, an independent fan guide that says it is not affiliated with Valve—not from Valve support guidance.

Make battery changes with realistic expectations
Valve’s 2026 software update notes report improved power efficiency and battery lifetime during both streaming and local gameplay, with gains of up to 12%. Valve says the result varies with framerate and content, so it is a vendor-reported maximum, not a promised increase for an individual session or a conversion into extra minutes (Valve software update notes).

Use the eye-tracking option only if it suits you
Valve added Track Dominant Eye Only at VR Settings > General; the update notes say advanced settings must be shown first. Valve describes this as an accessibility option. It is not documented as a battery-saving setting, and the notes do not claim it improves comfort for everyone (Valve software update notes).
For streaming errors, check the PC-side SteamVR version
Valve’s update notes report improved wireless streaming reliability and fixes for “Error 17.” They also identify SteamVR 2.18.2 or later on the PC as relevant to reducing those connection issues, while noting that 2.18.2 was on the SteamVR beta branch at the time of release (Valve software update notes). Because branch availability can change, check the current SteamVR release status rather than assuming that version remains beta or is required for every setup.
Know what a compatibility badge does—and does not—tell you
Valve’s Steam Frame review process applies to games running locally on the headset, not games streamed from a PC. A local compatibility badge therefore does not certify the performance of the same game when streamed; that session also depends on the computer and wireless connection (Steamworks: Steam Frame compatibility).
