Stop adding speculative fixes. First reproduce the failure, establish what should happen, and trace where actual behavior diverges. Then test one narrow change at a time, review it, and verify it in both tests and the running program. If the code is harder to understand and maintain than a clearer alternative, simplifying or replacing it is a valid fix.
Start by making the failure specific
Before editing, write down three things: what you did, what happened, and what you expected instead. Keep the exact error message or unexpected output. Save a checkpoint or commit the current state so you can compare or recover your work; an editor checkpoint is not a universal rollback for commands already run or changes made to external services.
Next, establish a baseline: compile or build the project and run the relevant tests. Note the first failure rather than trying to fix several errors at once. Compilation, tests, and static analysis are useful early checks, but a passing result does not establish that the code solves the right problem.
Trace the smallest path that can explain it
Reduce the investigation to the smallest relevant function, module, or reproducible input. Follow the call path and compare actual inputs, outputs, exceptions, and runtime values with what you expect. In a debugger, call stacks and frames show how execution reached a point; inspecting variables and using conditional breakpoints can help identify where behavior first diverges.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For complex changes across multiple files, plan the investigation or implementation before making edits. Review the plan and keep the scope small enough that each change can be understood and tested independently.
Use an AI assistant as a hypothesis generator
Give the assistant the relevant function or module, the exact error, the observed behavior, and the intended behavior. Ask it to explain the control flow, identify assumptions, suggest plausible causes, or propose one minimal test. Avoid requesting a broad rewrite while the failure is still unclear.

AI explanations and suggested fixes can sound convincing while being inaccurate, incomplete, or based on a misunderstanding of your intent. Treat each suggestion as a hypothesis to check against the code and runtime, not as a diagnosis. GitHub’s guidance on responsible use of Copilot Chat also notes that generated code can be syntactically or semantically wrong, and generated tests can miss scenarios.
Change one thing, then verify it
- State the hypothesis. Identify the specific cause you think explains the failure and what result would support or disprove it.
- Make the smallest relevant change. Keep the failing test, and change only the implicated unit or branch when possible.
- Run the focused test. Add or adjust tests for boundary conditions and failure behavior. AI-generated tests can suggest useful cases, but review them; they do not prove coverage or correctness.
- Run wider checks. Once the focused test passes, run the relevant broader suite, compilation, and static analysis to look for regressions.
- Inspect the diff. Confirm the change matches intended behavior and the project’s architecture. Check that tests were not removed or skipped and that the code remains understandable.
- Validate at runtime. Reproduce the original steps in the running program and confirm the unexpected behavior is gone without creating a new problem.
For a complex or sensitive change, ask a teammate to review it. GitHub’s review guidance for AI-generated code recommends checking functionality, quality, architecture, and security rather than accepting a plausible-looking patch at face value.

Use debugger-aware assistance when static inspection is not enough
An ordinary chat prompt depends on the context you provide. Debugger-aware assistance can use live information such as call stacks, frames, variable names, and values, and may help reproduce and instrument a failure. Microsoft documents a workflow in Visual Studio that uses debugger assistance to isolate a root cause and validate a correction through live execution, followed by human validation. Its documentation lists Visual Studio 2022 version 17.8 or later and Copilot access as prerequisites; feature availability and plan requirements can change. See Microsoft’s Visual Studio debugger and Copilot documentation.
Live context can make a hypothesis more grounded, but it does not make the proposed fix authoritative. Review the change, rerun tests, and confirm runtime behavior yourself.

Check dependencies and security before accepting a fix
Do not adopt a package simply because an assistant recommends it. Verify that it exists, is maintained, comes from an acceptable source, and has a license compatible with your project. Review security-sensitive code especially carefully for unsafe assumptions, ignored constraints, incorrect logic, invented APIs, unhandled edge cases, or tests that have been deleted or bypassed. GitHub’s AI code review guidance covers dependency and security review alongside functional checks.
Choose repair, simplification, or replacement
Prefer the smallest repair that restores intended behavior and remains testable and clear. But if the implementation is sprawling or opaque, repeated patches may increase regression risk without making the cause easier to understand. Compare the options by asking whether the failure is reproducible, whether a change can be isolated and tested, and whether the resulting code will be maintainable. If a simpler design is easier to verify and maintain than the generated implementation, refactor or replace it instead of continuing to layer fixes.

Keep future AI edits recoverable
For a large multi-file request, ask for a plan first, review it, and then implement in smaller steps with checks between them. Review AI output before integrating it, run tests and security checks, and use editor checkpoints or version control to preserve recoverable states. The VS Code AI best-practices guide recommends planning complex work, reviewing code, testing, and using checkpoints; checkpoints do not undo completed commands or external-service changes.
