If a USB-C charger is charging slowly, check the device’s exact charging requirements, then test the cable, adapter, temperature, settings, and port one at a time. USB-C describes the connector; it does not guarantee that every charger-and-cable combination supports your device’s fastest charging mode.
Why a USB-C charger may not fast-charge
Fast charging depends on the combination of device, adapter, cable, and charging conditions. A charger’s printed maximum wattage is not necessarily what your device receives: the device and charger must support compatible charging protocols and negotiate output. On multi-port chargers, power may also be shared or prioritized between connected devices.

Start with the support page for your exact device model. Apple lists compatible USB Power Delivery adapters for supported iPhones; Google lists compatible adapter types and cautions that other accessories may not work as expected. The required adapter and supported charging rate can vary by model. Apple’s iPhone fast-charge guidance and Google’s Pixel charging guidance are examples, not universal specifications.

Troubleshoot in this order
1. Test a simple charging setup
- Connect the device directly to a wall outlet, using one charger port and one cable. Remove any hub or dock from the connection.
- If the adapter has multiple ports, disconnect other devices and check whether charging improves. Some multi-port chargers share or reprioritize output. For example, Google says its Pixel Flex dual-port charger can provide up to 67 W from one port with one device connected, and up to 60 W per port when two devices are connected; these are product-specific ratings, not a general USB-C rule. 2. Swap the cable, then the adapter
Try a known-good cable that meets your device’s requirements, keeping the adapter the same. If that does not help, try a compatible adapter with the known-good cable. Changing one item at a time makes it easier to identify a failed or unsuitable component.

The cable type can affect speed. Google says a USB-A-to-USB-C setup charges Pixel phones more slowly than a USB-C adapter paired with a USB-C cable. Apple specifies a compatible USB-C Power Delivery adapter and USB-C cable for supported fast-charging setups. A damaged or incompatible cable can also cause very slow charging or no charging at all.
If a replacement resolves the issue, replace only the component that failed or is incompatible. Match the replacement to the device’s supported protocol and ratings; choosing a charger with a larger advertised wattage alone does not guarantee faster charging.

3. Let the device cool or warm to a moderate temperature
Unusually hot or cold conditions can reduce charging speed. Let the device return to a moderate temperature and try again. For a useful comparison, close demanding apps or leave the screen off while charging so the device is not using substantial power at the same time. This can help isolate the cause, but it does not guarantee a particular charging time.
Apple says fast charging may not work when conditions are too hot or too cold. Google notes that some Pixel phones adjust charging to manage device and battery temperatures.

4. Check charging settings and battery protection
On a Samsung Galaxy device, look under Settings > Battery > Charging settings and enable Fast charging if that option is available. Review Battery protection as well: the selected mode can limit the maximum charge level, which may look like charging has stopped early. Menu names and layouts vary by model and software version. Samsung also notes that fast charging may not work when charging from a PC or standard USB device. Samsung’s Galaxy charging troubleshooting guide.
5. Inspect the port and cable safely
- Turn off the device and use a light to look for visible debris in the port.
- Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning guidance. Samsung warns against using metal objects or liquids to remove debris.
- If a moisture warning appears, stop plugging in the charger until the port and cable are dry and the warning clears.
- Stop using a cable or adapter that is burned, melted, or corroded. Google advises discontinuing use of a cable if its port appears burned, melted, or corroded. Google Pixel charging safety guidance.
6. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider
Arrange service if charging remains slow with a known-good, model-compatible cable and adapter, or if the connector is loose or damaged, a moisture warning keeps returning, or the device or accessory becomes unusually hot. Samsung recommends service inspection when swapping compatible charging equipment does not resolve the issue.

What to check before replacing an accessory
Use your device maker’s compatibility guidance rather than choosing by connector shape or the largest wattage printed on a charger. Compare these points for the exact device and the port you plan to use:

- The output supported by the relevant USB-C port.
- Whether the adapter shares or reprioritizes power when other ports are occupied.
- The required cable type and rating.
- Safety and regional compliance for the accessory.
For context, Google’s Pixel guidance lists USB Power Delivery adapters rated at 15 W or more and PPS adapters rated at 30 W or more, and says supported Pixel models may charge at 30 W or more. These figures apply to Google’s guidance and supported models; they should not be treated as a requirement or expected speed for every Pixel, let alone every USB-C device.

Apple states that supported iPhone models can reach up to 50% battery in around 30 minutes under its listed fast-charge conditions. That is Apple’s stated performance claim, not a promise for every iPhone or charging situation; its page says charging times vary with settings and environmental factors. The claim’s testing notes identify January 2026 testing for iPhone 17e, July 2025 for the iPhone 17 family and iPhone Air, and August 2024 for the iPhone 16 family.
