Sometimes an AI assistant can place calls, but having a wake word enabled does not by itself mean calling is enabled. Whether it can call depends on the assistant, device, app permissions, integrations and settings. For example, Gemini on Android can use the phone’s calling app when the Google app has Phone permission; a separate setting controls whether calls can be made while the device is locked. Alexa calling has its own setup and permissions.
Does an AI assistant need permission to call?
For the documented calling features discussed here, calling depends on a supported route to the phone service and relevant app or device access. That is different from an assistant merely listening for a wake word. Google’s documentation, for example, describes the Google app’s Phone permission as allowing Assistant to make calls, while Gemini’s Android calling integration also has its own settings.

There is no single rule that applies to every assistant, phone, third-party app or jurisdiction. The official product guidance below describes specific features, not a universal legal requirement or a guarantee that every call will always require a fresh confirmation.
How calling works with Gemini on Android
Google says the Gemini mobile app on an Android phone or tablet can use the device’s calling app to call contacts, businesses and phone numbers. Google documents these prerequisites: an active phone plan, the Gemini app, saved contact information from signed-in devices, and Phone permission for the Google app. The integration is not available in Gemini in Google Messages or in the Gemini web app. Google also says not to use it for emergency calls; use the device’s calling app directly for emergency services. Permissions and integration controls
Google says the Phone app integration is designed to work automatically with the Gemini mobile app, and it can be disconnected in Gemini’s Connected Apps settings. The Google app must have Phone permission for the calling feature. Android presents an Allow or Don’t allow choice for that permission; labels and steps may vary by device and Android version.
Call Log permission may help Gemini connect the right person, while Contacts permission may allow calls to device contacts that are not synced to the Google Account. These permissions support contact matching or access to device contacts; they are distinct from the Phone permission described for calling.

Calls while the phone is locked
Gemini has a separate setting for this: in Gemini settings, switch “Allow calls and messages without unlocking” on or off. Turning off lock-screen calling addresses whether calls can be made while the phone is locked; it is not the same control as revoking Phone permission or disconnecting the integration.

Google’s permissions guidance says the Google app’s Phone permission can allow Assistant to make calls. Call Log permission can help identify people contacted most often and suggest the relevant person. Those permissions do not, on their own, describe whether a particular device or setup requires a confirmation before every call. See Google Search Help: Manage your Google app permissions.

Contact and activity settings affect personalization and data handling, not the same thing as call access. Google says Assistant may be less personalized when sharing settings are off; without contact information, it may not recognize the contact requested for a call. When Web & App Activity is enabled, Assistant interactions may appear in My Activity, where users can review and delete saved interactions. Does a mistaken wake-word activation mean a call was made?
No. Google says Assistant is designed to wait in standby until it detects activation; while in standby, it does not send what the user is saying to Google or anyone else. A sound resembling the wake phrase or accidental manual activation can trigger it by mistake. A device may indicate activation with an on-screen indicator or flashing LEDs.

That describes activation and audio handling, not whether a phone call occurred. An accidental activation alone does not establish that the calling feature was enabled or that a call was placed. Google says that when Web & App Activity is on, users can review and delete interactions in My Activity; when it is off, an unintended activation will not be stored there, according to Google’s privacy guidance. How Alexa calling is set up
Amazon’s setup instructions direct users to the Alexa app, then More > Communicate, where they verify mobile phone information and grant permissions for calling and messaging. Importing the phone’s contact list is optional. See Amazon Alexa Help: Set Up Calling and Messaging.

Alexa-to-Phone has its own geographic limits. Amazon says each household profile can select up to 10 mobile or landline numbers, and outbound calls are supported to most mobile and landline numbers in the U.S., UK, Canada and Mexico. The feature excludes some categories of numbers. These details apply to Alexa-to-Phone as documented by Amazon, not to every Alexa calling feature or every region. How to prevent an assistant from using a calling route
- Check the assistant’s calling integration. In Gemini, review Connected Apps and disconnect the Phone app integration if you do not want Gemini to use it.
- Review phone permissions. On Android, check the Google app’s permissions and deny Phone permission if you want to block the documented Gemini calling pathway. Review Contacts and Call Log separately if you also want to restrict contact matching or access to unsynced contacts.
- Turn off calls while locked. In Gemini settings, switch off “Allow calls and messages without unlocking” if the concern is calls from the lock screen.
- Review Alexa Communication access. In the Alexa app, check the permissions and calling setup under More > Communicate, and remove or restrict access you do not want enabled.
- Check the current product documentation. Menu names, availability and permission behavior can vary by device, software version and region. For an assistant not covered here, check its current permissions page and the phone’s app-permission and lock-screen settings.
Changing activity-history or voice settings is not equivalent to revoking Phone permission. Likewise, denying one documented permission should not be treated as proof that every possible calling route in every app has been disabled.
What this answer does—and does not—establish
The documented controls show that calling capability, lock-screen access, contact matching, activation and activity history are separate questions. Google and Amazon describe their own product features; those pages do not establish how every assistant, operating system, third-party integration, carrier or jurisdiction handles calls.
