First identify where the problem occurs: the game is missing from your Library, Steam cannot download or install it, or it is installed but will not launch. Check account access before changing files; then follow the troubleshooting steps for the specific failure and error message.
If the game is missing from your Library
Do not reinstall files until you confirm the account can access the game. A completed-looking transaction or game files already on the computer do not, by themselves, prove that the current Steam account owns the title.

- Check the Steam receipt email and purchase history. Confirm the purchase completed rather than remaining pending.
- If the purchase is complete, sign out of Steam and sign back in. Make sure you are using the account that made the purchase.
- Clear Library filters, then open View > Hidden Games to check whether the title is hidden.
- If Steam shows “Pre-Load Complete,” check ownership and Family Sharing access. Steam says this status can appear when game files are present but the account does not own the game or no longer has Family Sharing access. See Steam’s guidance for games missing from the Library.
If the game will not download or install
Try one change at a time and test the download after each step. That makes it easier to tell whether the issue was the client, cache, library folder, files, or download server.

- Restart Steam and your computer.
- In the Steam client, open Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. Steam says clearing the cache can solve problems with games that will not download or start. This does not affect currently installed games, but Steam will require you to sign in again. Client labels can vary by version. See Steam’s Clear Download Cache instructions.
- Open Settings > Storage, select the relevant library folder, and use its repair option if available. This is especially relevant when Steam reports a folder or permissions problem.
- Verify the game files if Steam has installed enough of the game for that option to be available. In the Library, right-click the game, open Properties > Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Change the download region in Settings > Downloads, then retry. Steam notes that a regional content server may be slow, overloaded, or failing; changing regions is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
- If the download repeatedly fails, try another drive only as a diagnostic test. A different drive will not resolve an account, network, or Steam-client problem by itself.

If Steam says the game is uninstalled or restarts the download
The game may still be on the computer even if Steam no longer recognizes the installation. Check before downloading everything again.
- In Settings > Storage, check the listed Steam libraries and their locations.
- Look in the expected library location for the game’s existing folder. If the folder is on another drive or library, add that existing library folder in Steam’s Storage Manager.
- Start the installation to the library that contains the files. Steam may identify and reuse existing game data rather than downloading it all again.
- Reinstall only if Steam still cannot recognize the files after you have checked the folder and registered library.
Steam warns that external drives can disconnect and cause performance or library-recognition issues. If an external drive is the likely cause, Steam recommends installing Steam and games on an internal drive. Do not delete the library or its steamapps folder as an early troubleshooting step: Steam warns that uninstalling Steam deletes game content. See Steam’s steps for games that appear uninstalled.

If the game downloads but will not launch
Use the displayed error to narrow the cause instead of applying every advanced fix at once. Check the game’s Store page for its operating-system support and hardware requirements, then follow the branch that matches the message.

“Preparing to Launch” appears, then nothing happens
- Restart the computer and try again.
- Install current operating-system updates and relevant device drivers.
- Verify the game files using Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Temporarily close non-essential software that could interfere, then retest. Avoid disabling security protection wholesale.
- Compare your computer with the game’s Store-page requirements. Steam notes that being close to minimum requirements can still be associated with launch or performance problems.
Linux and macOS users should check platform support for the specific game; a title that supports Windows may not support another operating system. If general troubleshooting does not resolve a game-specific launch failure, Steam recommends contacting the game’s developer. See Steam’s troubleshooting steps for games that fail to launch.

“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
A security product may have quarantined or blocked a game file. Check that product’s quarantine or history and follow Steam’s instructions for the security software. Do not turn off all protection or create a broad exclusion. If the file is not blocked, restart the computer and verify the game files. If the error remains, contact Steam Support with the requested screenshot of the error and system report. See Steam’s Missing Executable guidance.
“Game is not available on your current platform”
This message means the game does not support the operating system currently in use. Check the operating-system and hardware requirements on that game’s Store page before trying more file repairs. If you bought the game through the Steam Store and it will not run on your platform, you can request a refund through Steam. Steam’s published standard is a request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime; requests outside those conditions may still be submitted for review, but approval is not guaranteed. Steam handles third-party retail-key purchases differently. Check the live Steam refund policy for current terms.

Steam says the game is already running
A previous crash or hang may have left the game process open. On Windows, open Task Manager and end the game process only if it is actually stuck. On other systems, restart before trying again. If you use the Steam client beta, test outside the beta; also check whether the game is running under another operating-system account. When to contact support
- Steam Support: account or Library access problems, persistent download/client errors, and Missing Executable errors that remain after checking security-software history and verifying files.
- The game developer: a title-specific launch failure that persists after checking requirements, updating the system and drivers, and verifying files.
- A qualified PC technician: suspected hard-drive or memory faults, or a local hardware/configuration problem you cannot diagnose safely.
