No single setting covers every browser, account, app, or device—and filters cannot guarantee that every harmful or misleading answer disappears. Pair controls with conversation, help children check important claims, and review the rules when their needs change.
Start by deciding what you want to limit
Before changing settings, ask what your child uses search and AI for, what is useful, and what is causing concern. The goal might be fewer mature search results, less time in a particular app, fewer purchases, or clearer expectations for AI use. A specific concern usually calls for a more targeted rule than blocking broad categories of information.

The Federal Trade Commission recommends discussing family rules before relying on parental controls. As it puts it, “Talking with your kids about your family’s rules and expectations is key to helping them establish good online habits.” FTC: How To Use Parental Controls To Keep Your Kid Safer Online.
How do I decide which parental controls to use?
There is no universal switch: search filters, device settings, app controls, and network tools address different parts of a child’s online use. Choose based on the device and accounts your child actually uses, the specific behavior you want to manage, and how much monitoring fits your family.

- Coverage: Does the control apply to one search app, one device, or multiple devices and accounts?
- Control type: Do you need to filter search results, restrict websites or apps, set time limits, prevent purchases, manage communications, or view activity reports?
- Fit: Is the level of restriction appropriate for your child’s age and the concern you identified? Can legitimate school resources remain accessible?
- Privacy: What activity or personal information does a service collect, retain, or make visible to caregivers?
- Exceptions and workarounds: Could your child switch browsers, accounts, or devices? How can they ask you to unblock something they need?
Start with built-in options if they cover the need. The FTC points to Apple Family Sharing and Google Family Link as free options. Some third-party services, including Bark, Qustodio, and Net Nanny, are examples families may consider for wider device coverage, but their current features, prices, regional availability, and privacy practices have not been compared here. A paid service is not automatically necessary or the best fit.
Apply the control closest to the concern
- For search results: Check SafeSearch or the equivalent filter in the search service your child uses. Also check the browser and search app in use; a setting in one service may not carry over to another.
- For apps, time, purchases, and content access: Inspect the device’s family, content-restriction, or screen-time settings, then review relevant controls within the apps themselves. Check whether your child can use another browser, account, or device that falls outside the setting.
- For broader management: If built-in controls do not cover the devices or features you need, compare third-party services by coverage, controls, privacy, and available exceptions—not by a general “best” label.
- Test useful access: Have your child try the schoolwork, hobbies, and other legitimate resources they need. If something is blocked, adjust the relevant filter or exception rather than assuming the entire restriction must be removed.
Control names and menus change across devices and services, so check the current settings on the products your family uses. Features differ, and a child may find a workaround; a filter can reduce exposure but cannot ensure that all harmful content is blocked.

Can I set parental controls in specific apps?
Often, yes, but the available controls depend on the app and device. A device-level setting may manage app access or time, while an app may have its own content, account, or family options. Neither necessarily covers activity in other browsers, accounts, or devices, so check the paths your child uses rather than assuming one app’s setting applies everywhere.

Use AI together, and teach children to check answers
When a child gets an AI-generated answer, look at it together instead of treating fluency as proof. UNICEF suggests asking, “Which parts of the answer seem helpful? Which parts seem confusing or not quite right?” UNICEF: Parenting in the AI age.
- Ask what seems useful, unclear, unsupported, or overly confident.
- Look for sources that support important factual claims, and check consequential answers against reliable sources suited to the subject.
- Explain that a polished answer can still be inaccurate. Common Sense Media’s 2026 assessment cautions that AI search answers may be wrong; its assessment concerns the tools it evaluated, not every AI search service. Common Sense Media: AI ratings.
- For health, safety, or emotional crises, connect the child with a trusted person and appropriate professional support instead of treating a chatbot as a confidential counselor.
Set a simple privacy rule for search and AI
Tell children not to casually enter identifying details—such as a home address, school, or phone number—or intimate information into a search or AI tool without an adult’s guidance. Sensitive information is not limited to names and contact details: UNICEF notes that children may not recognize that details about feelings, health, or friendships can also be private.

Do I need to worry about my kid disabling parental controls?
It is sensible to check what your chosen settings cover, including other browsers, accounts, and devices. Controls vary, and children may find ways around them, so treat settings as one layer of guidance rather than a guarantee. Explain what the rule is for and how your child can request a change if it blocks schoolwork or another legitimate need. The FTC’s guidance on parental controls emphasizes choosing options that fit your family’s devices and boundaries: FTC: How To Use Parental Controls To Keep Your Kid Safer Online.

Review the arrangement as your child’s needs change
Revisit the rules with your child rather than leaving settings unexplained or treating them as permanent. Ask whether a control is blocking useful work, whether it covers the devices and accounts they actually use, and whether they know how to ask for help or an exception. Adjust the controls as their needs and the tools change; family guidance remains part of the approach, not a substitute for settings or vice versa. Common Sense Media also advises parents to keep talking with children about technology and safety. Common Sense Media: Parental Controls and Privacy Settings.
