Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA Steam Deck Verified badge means a game meets Valve’s compatibility criteria and works well on Deck by default; it is not a guarantee of identical performance in every scene, with every update, or under every setting. If a Verified game runs poorly, check the scope of the problem, update and restart the Deck, then test one reversible change at a time.
First, identify what is going wrong
Before changing settings, note whether the problem is limited to one game or affects several, and whether performance is consistently low or has recently started dropping or stuttering. Also distinguish low frame rate from crashes, missing content, visual glitches, or control problems. These clues help determine whether to focus on the game or the Deck’s software.

- One game: Check that title’s compatibility notes and consider contacting its developer if the issue continues.
- Several games or an unstable Steam interface: Prioritize system updates, a restart, and other system-level checks.
- A recent change: Note whether the issue began after a game, SteamOS, Proton, or settings update.
Verified is a compatibility classification, not a fixed performance rating. Valve has described ratings as a snapshot that can change as games and Proton change; its 2022 announcement explains the snapshot nature of the program at Steam’s Deck Verified update.
Try low-risk checks before tuning
- Install SteamOS updates: Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available updates.
- Restart the Deck: Choose Steam > Power > Restart.
- Temporarily close third-party software: If you run Desktop Mode applications or other third-party tools, exit or disable them and retest the game.
These are among Valve’s first-line software checks in its Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide.

Reduce graphics load, one setting at a time
Lower the game’s graphics preset, or reduce demanding options individually. Keep a note of the original values so you can restore them. Change one setting, then replay the same scene under the same conditions; that makes it easier to tell whether the change helped.
Valve recommends trying lower graphics settings for performance problems, but does not promise a specific frame-rate increase. Performance issues can have different causes, so a lower preset is a diagnostic step rather than a guaranteed fix. Steam’s general performance troubleshooting guidance is for PC hardware broadly, not a diagnosis of a particular Deck or game.

Test Proton as a controlled comparison
If the game still misbehaves, you can compare Proton versions for a Steam game. Valve’s general Deck guidance suggests trying the latest Proton version when Proton is not already enabled or the game is having issues. This is a test, not a promise that the latest version will improve every title.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the game in your Steam Library.
- Open Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then select the latest Proton version available.
- Retest the same scene. If the result is worse, return to the previous compatibility selection.
Change only Proton for this comparison, rather than combining it with graphics changes. Steam may need to download a Windows version of the game if only its Linux build was installed, so allow for additional download and storage use. A game developer’s compatibility note should guide you only when it applies to the exact title and build; do not assume Proton Experimental or an older release is the right choice.

Verify game files when there are crashes or missing content
File verification is worth trying when the game crashes or content appears to be missing, but it is not a universal low-FPS fix.
- Open the game’s Library entry and choose Properties > Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let Steam complete the check.
Steam notes that some files may fail verification normally because local configuration files are intentionally not replaced. See its Verify Integrity of Game Files guidance.

Check the Deck’s display limit
The maximum display refresh rate differs by Deck model:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Steam Deck model | Display refresh-rate cap documented by Valve |
|---|---|
| LCD | 60 Hz |
| OLED | 90 Hz |
A game refresh-rate choice above your model’s display cap cannot improve performance and may use more battery. Valve documents these model limits in its Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide. There is no single FPS target that suits every game: aim for stable frame pacing appropriate to the title and the refresh rate you choose.

Escalate with details that help support reproduce the problem
If the issue persists after updating and restarting, Valve suggests checking Deck discussions and contacting Steam Support. For a problem confined to one game, contact its developer as well. Include:
- The game name and version, and whether the problem affects other games.
- Your Deck model, plus SteamOS and Proton versions if known.
- The scene and steps that reliably reproduce the issue.
- Your graphics and frame-limit settings, and whether you changed them during troubleshooting.
- What changed shortly before the problem began.
Keep recovery and re-imaging for serious system problems, not routine tuning for one poorly performing game. Valve’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting page includes options that erase local data.
