Open the exact game’s Steam store listing or its entry in your Steam Deck library and check the Steam Deck compatibility section. Verified is Valve’s clearest positive signal; Playable means the game may work with usability caveats; Unsupported is a warning under Valve’s criteria. If the status is Unknown or untested, there is no official rating to rely on—it does not prove the game will fail.
Check the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility status
- Find the exact game. Search Steam for the title you intend to install. Check that you have the right edition or bundle, since separate store entries can have different information.
- Open its store listing or library details. Look for the Steam Deck compatibility status and any accompanying explanation. Steam’s storefront supports filters for Deck compatibility categories, including Verified and Playable, and shows a compatibility review date. Steam store compatibility filters
- Read the details, not just the label. A category is a useful first signal, but its caveats can determine whether the game suits your controls, display preferences, or tolerance for launcher issues.
- Check how recent the review is. If the information is old, look again close to installation. Valve describes compatibility ratings as a snapshot; ratings can change as Valve and developers address issues. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility announcement
The Steam pages reviewed confirm that compatibility information and filters are available, but do not establish a current, exact sequence of Deck client menus. Open the game’s listing or library details and inspect its compatibility section rather than relying on a particular button path.

What each compatibility label means
| Label | What it tells you | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Valve’s strongest positive compatibility signal. The program assesses whether a game works well on Deck, and its Verified criteria are intentionally demanding. Valve’s explanation of the categories | It is the clearest official indication that the game is a good fit. Check any displayed details for the exact listing. |
| Playable | The game can work, but may have caveats. Valve’s example is a game that usually shows controller prompts but occasionally asks the player to press a keyboard key. Valve’s explanation of the categories | Read the listed issues and decide whether they matter for how you play. |
| Unsupported | Valve has identified a notable failure under its criteria. That does not mean no user can ever run the game: Valve has said an optional minigame crash or a poorly rendered tutorial video could be enough for this label even when most of a game works. Valve’s explanation of the categories | Treat it as a warning. If you still want to investigate, look for recent reports about the exact game and build. |
| Unknown or untested | No official rating is available to answer whether the game works on Deck. Steam store compatibility filters | Use recent, game-specific player reports as supplementary evidence, not a guarantee. |
When the status is missing, uncertain, or concerning
Look for recent reports about the exact game and current build. Community curator pages can describe practical problems such as controls or display issues, and may report games working despite an uncertain official category. For example, Deck Games curator reports offer community observations; they are not Valve ratings or guarantees.

Compare evidence by specificity and age: a recent report about the same game version is more useful than an old general claim that a title runs on Linux. If you are choosing between games, consider the official category, its listed caveats, the compatibility review date, and the recency of player reports. A caveat’s importance depends on your own control and display preferences; do not assume one game performs better without evidence for that comparison.

Why a Windows game may still work on Deck
SteamOS is Linux-based, but that does not mean a Steam game needs a native Linux version to run. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer lets the vast majority of Steam’s library run on SteamOS without developers porting every Windows game. This broad compatibility is not a promise about any individual title, so use the game’s own compatibility status and details. Valve’s SteamOS page
