What to Do When a Secure Phone App or Service Stops Getting Updates

An app and a phone have separate update lifecycles. Check both, back up, and migrate through official channels if support has ended.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, find out what stopped updating: the app, the service behind it, the phone’s operating system, or the phone maker’s security support. These are separate update streams, so an updated app does not prove the phone is supported—and a patched phone does not make an abandoned app safe. Check the developer’s and manufacturer’s official information, back up, and use an official supported migration route. If support has ended, move away from the unsupported product; interim precautions can reduce exposure but cannot supply missing patches.

Why might a secure app stop getting updates?

There are several possibilities: the developer may have ended maintenance, the service may be changing or closing, your phone may no longer meet the app’s requirements, or an available update may simply be failing to install. A lack of recent updates by itself does not prove that an app has been abandoned or compromised.

Check the app’s official store listing for its latest update information and developer details, then look for a maintenance notice or support announcement on the developer’s official site. The UK government’s app-store and developer code calls for relevant security and privacy information and says users should be able to find details such as when an app was last updated; it is policy guidance, not proof that every store or developer complies. Read the UK government’s app-store and developer code.

If an update appears available but will not install, check ordinary causes before treating the app as discontinued:

  • Confirm automatic updates are enabled, or try updating through the official app store.
  • Check Wi-Fi, power, and available storage; some updates may require them.
  • See whether the phone is too far behind to install the current app version, and restart if prompted.
  • Back up before a substantial software update.

The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises checking whether important software remains supported and identifies the operating system and installed apps as distinct software types. See its guidance on keeping devices and software up to date.

How can I tell whether the phone or only the app is out of date?

Check each support status separately. A phone that still turns on and runs apps may nevertheless have reached end of support. The Australian Cyber Security Centre defines end of support as the point when a device, software, or system no longer receives updates or technical support; the product may continue to work while becoming more exposed to attacks because newly discovered weaknesses are no longer patched. Read the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s explanation of end of support.

  • Phone operating system: Check the phone’s software settings for its OS version and security-update status.
  • Phone model: Search the manufacturer’s official support information for the exact model and its security-update support period.
  • Service: Check the provider’s official status or announcement pages to learn whether the service is maintained, changing, or shutting down.

One stream continuing does not compensate for another ending. The NCSC advises checking support for both devices and software. Its update guidance explains the distinction.

Is it safe to keep using an app or phone that no longer gets updates?

It may still function, but its risk changes: weaknesses discovered after support ends may remain unpatched. That does not mean every unsupported app has been hacked or that a breach is inevitable. It does mean you should not treat the product as fully protected. The NCSC says there is no risk-free way to continue using an obsolete product and that stopping use is the only fully effective mitigation. Read the NCSC’s guidance on obsolete products.

While arranging a change, reduce what the unsupported app or phone can access. Avoid using it for sensitive accounts or important data where practical, do not open unexpected links or attachments, avoid installing unnecessary software, and keep the phone locked. If feasible, disconnect an unsupported product from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the internet, and other networks when it is not needed. These steps can limit exposure or impact; they do not repair missing security patches. The NCSC’s detailed obsolete-product guidance is written for organisations, so consumer users should treat these measures as precautions, not a way to make an unsupported phone secure.

What should I use instead, and how do I move my account and data?

Choose only an alternative that the developer or service provider identifies as supported, and verify that it is currently maintained. There is no responsible way to name a substitute without knowing which app or service you use. Before changing anything, use this sequence:

  1. Back up. Save the phone and relevant app data using the phone maker’s or app provider’s official instructions.
  2. Find the official route. Check the developer’s support pages for an export, account transfer, migration, or recovery process. The exact steps depend on the app.
  3. Check the destination. Confirm the proposed replacement service or app is supported and obtain it through an official app store or provider channel. Do not install unofficial copies or purported “security update” packages.
  4. Prepare account access. Confirm you can recover the account and set up any required authentication on the destination before deleting access to the old app.
  5. Move and verify. Follow the provider’s stated transfer steps, then confirm that essential records, messages, or authentication access are available where expected.
  6. Retire the old app. Once the move is complete, stop using and remove the unsupported app as appropriate.

If there is no supported alternative or trustworthy migration path, contact the provider and ask how to preserve records or transfer the account. You may need to export what the official service allows, move critical communication or authentication to a maintained option, and then stop using the unsupported app. The right order depends on the service; do not delete an account or app until you understand the consequences for recovery and data access. For a work-managed phone or account, ask your IT manager to assess access and migration.

Do I need a new phone?

Only if the phone’s operating system or device itself is unsupported, or if it cannot run the supported software you need. If the app alone has stopped receiving updates, replacing the handset will not make its developer resume maintenance; the relevant change is to a supported app or service. If the phone or OS has reached end of support, check the manufacturer’s stated support period for the exact model and consider a supported phone. Support periods vary. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2018 discussion of mobile-device security updates noted variation in support duration and update frequency, drawing primarily on information it requested from eight manufacturers in 2016; it is historical context, not a current model list. Read the FTC’s 2018 update-practices release.

When retiring the old phone, remove personal information and reset it before selling or giving it away. The Australian Cyber Security Centre also recommends upgrading a phone or operating system when it is too old to receive updates. See its mobile-phone security advice.
