If your household’s piped water is absent, intermittent, or potentially unsafe, first identify where the water comes from and ask your local water or public-health authority what testing and treatment fit that source. Use a treatment method suited to the actual water-quality risk, then keep treated water safely covered and dispense it without contaminating it. For a lasting solution, the source and supply system also need responsible operation, maintenance, and monitoring.

What does “reliable” and “safe” water mean?

Water access and water safety are related but different. The WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) calls a service “safely managed” when it uses an improved source that is on the premises, available when needed, and free from contamination. If one or more of those conditions is missing but the round trip to collect water takes 30 minutes or less, the service is classified as basic. Longer collection from an improved source is limited service. Unprotected wells and springs are unimproved sources; direct use of rivers, lakes, streams, dams, or canals is surface water. These are service categories, not test results for a particular household. JMP drinking-water service definitions

An “improved” source is not automatically safe at the point where your family drinks it. Contamination can be present at the source or introduced during transport, storage, or dispensing. In 2022, an estimated 2.2 billion people—27% of the global population—lacked safely managed drinking water, according to the JMP’s 2023 update. Its estimate also says 703 million people lacked even basic services that year: 292 million walked more than 30 minutes to collect water, 296 million used unprotected sources, and 115 million used untreated water from rivers or lakes. What should we assess first?

  • Stackable Design: Water tanks have a unique stackable design, allowing for efficient space utilization; Measures 22"L x 23"W x 30"H
  • Source: for example, a borehole, protected or unprotected well or spring, rain collection, vendor, tanker, public tap, or surface water.
  • Availability: when the supply runs, how often it stops, and whether you can collect enough for drinking and household needs.
  • Collection: how far you travel and how long a round trip takes.
  • Handling: whether water is carried or stored, and how it is transferred and dispensed.
  • Changes or concerns: any sudden change in appearance, taste, or smell, or any suspected illness or contamination.

These observations help guide local advice, but appearance, taste, or smell alone cannot establish whether water is safe. If water quality has suddenly changed, chemical contamination is suspected, or someone is ill, seek prompt local public-health advice rather than relying on a general household fix.

How can we make collected water safer to drink?

Ask the local water or public-health authority about testing and treatment for your specific source and likely hazards. Different problems require different responses: boiling, a filter, or a consumer test kit should not be assumed to address every microbial and chemical contaminant. Where the cause of a quality change is unknown, local assessment matters before settling on a treatment method.

WHO identifies household water treatment and safe storage (HWTS) as an important intervention for people relying on unimproved sources and, in some cases, unsafe or unreliable piped water. Treatment and storage do separate jobs: treatment addresses water quality; careful storage and dispensing reduce the chance of contamination afterward. WHO reports that nearly 2 billion people use unimproved drinking-water sources or improved sources that are faecally contaminated. WHO: Household water treatment and safe storage

How should we store drinking water safely?

After water has been treated appropriately, use a clean, covered container intended for drinking water. A container with a tap or spigot can make dispensing easier without dipping hands or cups into the stored supply. Keep the container covered and handle the tap and drinking vessels in a way that avoids introducing dirt or untreated water. A covered container does not purify water; it is a storage and dispensing measure, not a substitute for suitable treatment.

What can a household do about an unreliable shared supply?

If several households use the same borehole, well, spring, public tap, or small network, report recurring outages, suspected contamination, and maintenance problems to the responsible operator or local authority. A dependable supply requires more than buying equipment: risks need to be assessed across the source, treatment, distribution, and household handling, with control measures and corrective actions when problems arise.

WHO’s water safety planning approach provides a framework for managing risks across a supply. Its rural field guide offers a step-by-step approach and templates for small communities. WHO: Water safety planning for small community water supplies WHO’s 2025 compendium also treats source, treatment, distribution, and household practices together, emphasizing that technology choices should suit local conditions and water-quality challenges. When should you seek urgent local advice?

  • A household member becomes ill and unsafe water may be involved.
  • You suspect chemical contamination or the source has changed suddenly.
  • A shared supply repeatedly fails, or its operator cannot explain how quality and maintenance are managed.

WHO attributes close to half a million diarrhoeal deaths in low- and middle-income countries to inadequate drinking-water, with the vast majority among children under five. That global estimate is not a prediction about any one household, but it underscores why suspected illness or contamination warrants prompt local advice.
