Dota 2’s five positions describe how a team shares lane access, farm priority and responsibilities—not five fixed classes of hero. Position 1 usually gets the most room to farm; positions 4 and 5 generally take fewer guaranteed resources and focus more on enabling teammates. The exact lane and job can change with the draft, matchup and state of the game.
Positions and hero roles are different things
In Dota 2, a position is a team role shaped by resource priority and responsibilities. A hero role is a description of what that hero can do. Valve’s Hero Browser uses functional filters such as Carry and Support, and can combine them with tags such as Nuker or Jungler (Valve’s Reborn announcement). A hero may fit more than one label: Valve’s Puck page lists both Carry and Support (Puck’s official hero page).

Lane names are another distinction. Valve’s International 2018 Battle Pass described role-based queue preferences as Safe, Mid, Offlane or Support, while allowing players to choose a hero that fit the team’s needs (The International 2018 Battle Pass). That historical description helps distinguish lane preference from hero capability; it should not be read as a guide to the current queue interface.

How the five positions compare
| Position | Typical farm priority | Common lane pattern | Typical contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1: Carry | Highest priority for safe access to creeps and items | Often the safe lane | Scales into a major later-game threat through sustained damage or objective pressure |
| 2: Mid | Core priority; develops an independent level and item curve | Middle lane | Can use that independent progression to pressure other lanes or contribute a core’s damage and control |
| 3: Offlane | Core priority, usually behind the carry in access to farm | Often contests the opposing carry’s lane | Commonly brings frontline presence, initiation, control or utility |
| 4: Soft support | Lower and less guaranteed farm than the cores | Often supports the offlane or moves around the map | Helps create plays with control, utility or saves |
| 5: Hard support | Usually the lowest farm priority | Often helps the carry’s lane | Supports lanes and provides team utility such as vision or saves |
These are common conventions, not a fixed lineup or a guarantee about a particular hero. Valve’s role-queue description establishes lane preferences, not a universal playbook for positions 2 and 3. Support responsibilities also overlap: a position 4 and position 5 may trade duties according to the draft and lane matchup.

What each position does
Position 1: Carry
The carry typically receives substantial farm so the hero can build the levels and items needed to become a major threat later. That does not mean the carry should avoid every fight or that every carry has the same timing: the right balance between farming, defending and joining fights depends on the hero and game state.
A Valve-hosted community carry build illustrates the resource curve with advice about farming efficiency, lane pressure, scaling item choices and combat (the carry build). Treat it as a hero-specific, patch-sensitive example, not a rule for every carry.

Position 2: Mid
Position 2 takes the middle lane and commonly builds an independent level and item curve. A mid player may move to pressure side lanes, but roaming or setting the pace is a common pattern rather than a compulsory job. The hero, matchup and opportunities on the map determine when leaving mid is worthwhile.

Position 3: Offlane
The offlaner is a core who often faces the enemy carry’s lane. Many position 3 heroes contribute frontline presence, initiation, control or utility, but no single combination defines the position. Draft choices can change whether an offlaner’s priority is starting fights, disrupting the opposing carry or supplying another kind of team utility.

Position 4: Soft support
The soft support usually has less guaranteed farm than the cores and often works with the offlaner or moves to help create plays elsewhere. Control, utility and saves are common contributions. This is a broad convention, not a complete official definition: the available Valve material does not set out a full position 4 rulebook.
Position 5: Hard support
The hard support commonly helps the carry’s lane and has the lowest farm priority. Support work can include vision, lane assistance and utility for allies. A Valve-hosted community support build explicitly discusses a position 5 and gives examples involving vision, camp blocking, mobility and saving allies (the support build). It is a hero-specific example, not a universal guide to every position 5.

How to use the position system in a real match
Think of positions as a way to coordinate scarce resources, not as rigid job descriptions. A useful starting point is to ask who needs safe farm to scale, which cores can develop in their lanes, and which supports can give up resources to help them. Then adjust for the chosen heroes, lane matchups and what the team needs as the game unfolds.
- Farm priority is not a permanent claim on every creep. A core may give up farm to defend, join a fight or make room for a teammate who can use that resource better at that moment.
- Lane assignments can vary. Safe lane, mid and offlane are common starting patterns, not proof that every match follows a standard arrangement.
- Support duties are shared and adaptable. Vision, lane support, control and saves are team needs; the two supports can take different shares of them from game to game.
- Hero labels are clues, not position assignments. A Carry or Support filter describes a functional fit; it does not by itself tell you which position the hero will fill in a specific draft.
Positions are best treated as a starting framework for deciding who gets resources and what the team needs—not as laws that override the hero, patch or game state.
