A black screen or DRAM light after installing DDR5 does not always mean the memory has failed: the first boot can spend several minutes training the new configuration. Give it time before interrupting it; if it still will not POST, restore default memory settings, isolate the DIMMs, and check compatibility in that order.
How to tell normal DDR5 training from a failed POST
Memory training lets the system firmware optimize communication among the RAM, CPU memory controller, and BIOS. It can run on the first boot, after a memory configuration change, or after a firmware update. During training, the PC may show no video, reboot, or remain on a motherboard DRAM indicator.

There is no universal timeout. Kingston’s guidance says some DDR5 PCs may take 3–5 minutes, while some server or workstation systems may take up to 15 minutes; greater installed capacity can extend the process. ASUS gives approximately 5–10 minutes for its applicable products, including up to 10 minutes for 64 GB, and advises keeping the device powered while it trains. These are manufacturer estimates, not guarantees for every PC. See Kingston memory support and ASUS support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWait through the interval recommended for your system before deciding it is stuck. Check the motherboard’s DRAM debug LED or POST code and watch for an on-screen message. A black screen alone is not proof of failure during this window. Avoid repeated forced shutdowns while the system appears to be training; interrupting it can prevent the process from completing. Kingston advises against bypassing training.

Recover the system in a safe order
1. Allow the first training cycle to finish
After installing or changing memory, power on once and let the system run. Keep it connected to power, note the LEDs or codes, and wait for the platform’s guidance. If it completes training, it may reboot or continue to the operating system.
2. Restore default memory settings
If you can enter BIOS/UEFI, disable XMP, EXPO, or DOCP and remove manual frequency or timing changes. Set memory options to Auto or defaults, then try to boot again. A profile’s advertised speed is an overclocking target, not a promise that every CPU and motherboard combination will support it.

If the system cannot POST because of a memory profile or manual setting, clear CMOS using the exact procedure in the motherboard manual. Boards may use a jumper, button, or another method; do not assume the procedure is interchangeable. ASUS and Kingston both recommend restoring defaults when profile settings prevent stable startup. ASUS’s relevant guidance is at its XMP/EXPO/DOCP support FAQ.

3. Reseat and test one DIMM at a time
- Shut the PC down, switch off and disconnect its power, and follow the motherboard manual’s precautions before handling components.
- Reseat the DIMMs, pressing them fully into their slots until the latches engage.
- Use the manual’s recommended slot for a single-DIMM configuration. Test one stick, then shut down and test the other stick in that same recommended slot.
- If needed, test only the other slots permitted by the manual. Record whether the failure follows a particular DIMM or stays with a slot or channel.
MSI recommends one-stick-at-a-time testing in the board’s specified slots. Slot order varies by motherboard, so do not infer the correct single-stick slot from another model’s layout. See MSI’s DRAM EZ Debug LED guidance.

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
4. Verify the exact system configuration
Check the complete RAM kit part number, generation, capacity, number of modules, motherboard model and revision, processor model, and BIOS version. Compare the kit and intended population against the motherboard’s memory support list or QVL, the motherboard manual, and the CPU’s memory specifications. More modules or ranks can lower the supported speed.
Use a matched kit rather than combining separate kits with different densities or specifications. Even when a kit is listed as compatible, begin diagnosis at default settings; only then assess whether its XMP/EXPO profile works on this particular CPU and board. Kingston’s memory support information discusses compatibility and module population.

5. Check for a relevant BIOS update
If memory is still missing or unstable at defaults, check the support page and release notes for the exact motherboard model and revision for relevant memory-compatibility updates. Some early DDR5 platforms may need BIOS support for newer 24Gbit-density modules. Follow only the board maker’s instructions, and never flash firmware intended for another model or revision. A vendor-provided Flash BIOS feature may be an option on some boards, but its availability and steps are model-specific.
Use the results to identify the likely fault
- It boots at defaults but not with XMP/EXPO: The profile is not stable in this CPU, board, and memory configuration. Keep defaults or adjust only using the motherboard’s documented options; do not treat the kit’s rated profile speed as guaranteed.
- One stick fails in the same recommended slot while the other works: The problem may follow that DIMM. Confirm by repeating the test and contact the memory vendor if the behavior persists.
- Both sticks work in one slot but fail in another permitted slot or channel: The issue may be tied to a slot, channel, board, or CPU memory-controller connection. MSI notes that CPU socket pins or the memory controller can be implicated. CPU removal and socket inspection can cause damage; if you are not experienced, have a technician diagnose it.
- Neither stick works at defaults after reseating and testing: Recheck the board’s population rules and compatibility list, then contact the RAM and motherboard vendors with the exact part number, CPU and board details, BIOS version, debug code, and tests performed.
Kingston’s support guidance says to contact its technical support if memory fails at default settings. Do not keep changing timings to force a boot when the kit is not stable at stock configuration.
