For most people, automatic phone updates are the safer, more convenient default because they reduce the chance of forgetting security fixes. Keep update notifications on and check occasionally that updates are installing. If you prefer to choose when your phone restarts, automatic downloads with manual installation can be a good compromise. Fully manual updates work only if you check regularly and install security updates promptly.
Automatic or manual updates: what is the difference?
“Automatic updates” can mean that a phone downloads an update, installs it, or does both. Manual updating means you decide when to check for or install available software. The main trade-off is convenience and fewer delays versus control over installation timing—not a proven difference in security outcomes.

How automatic updates work on iPhone
Apple separates automatic downloads from automatic installation. With automatic installation enabled, an iPhone downloads and installs an available update overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi, and notifies you before installation. How automatic updates work on Android
Most Android system updates and security patches install automatically, but schedules and behavior vary by phone, manufacturer, and carrier. You can check your Android version, security update, and Google Play system update in Settings. On many devices, a downloaded update becomes active after a restart. Android phones enrolled in an organization’s management program may have administrator-set update policies, such as automatic installation, a daily installation window, or postponement. Which approach should you choose?
Choose automatic installation for routine updates
This is the sensible default if you want your phone to handle updates and can tolerate a restart at a suitable time. It reduces the need to remember to check, while still allowing the phone’s update process and schedule to vary by platform and device.

Choose automatic downloads with manual installation for more control
If you want an update ready but need to pick when to restart, download automatically and install manually where your phone offers that option. This preserves timing control, but the update will remain pending until you act.
Choose fully manual updating only if you will keep up
Manual checks can suit people who regularly manage their phone’s settings. Set a recurring reminder if needed, and install security updates promptly; otherwise, greater control can turn into a longer delay.

Follow your organization’s policy on a managed phone
A work-managed phone may have an update window, required installation, or limits on postponement. Follow your organization’s instructions rather than trying to work around its update policy.
How to reduce update disruption
- Check the update and follow your phone’s instructions. On iPhone, automatic installation is scheduled overnight while charging and on Wi-Fi, with notification beforehand.
- For Android, prepare for the update as Google advises. Google’s general guidance recommends Wi-Fi and at least 75% battery charge before updating; requirements and settings can differ across devices.
- Allow time for installation and a restart. Avoid starting an update when you need the phone immediately.
- Check support for your exact model if updates have stopped. Android update schedules vary by manufacturer and carrier, and older devices may not support newer Android versions. Consult the manufacturer’s model-specific support information.
