If a new PC game will not launch, first note exactly what happens, restart Windows, then use the game launcher’s built-in file verification. Those reversible checks can address common launch problems without guessing at a cause. If they do not help, check the game’s official requirements and support notices before changing drivers, security settings, or other system components.
1. Identify what happens when you click Play
The symptom and exact wording help narrow down the next step. Record any error message or code, and note whether the game does nothing, shows a launcher error, stays open as a background process, crashes, or stops at an anti-cheat message.

Also note the game title, launcher, Windows version, recent game or driver changes, and whether other games launch. These details are useful if you need to contact support; by themselves, they do not establish the cause.
2. Restart Windows and check for a stuck process
Restart the PC, open the game through its usual launcher, and try again. If Steam reports that the game is already running, look for a leftover game process and follow Steam’s instructions for the “app already running” error. If another launcher displays a specific error, look for guidance from that launcher or the game’s publisher rather than applying a generic fix.

3. Verify the game files in its launcher
A damaged or incomplete installation can stop a game from starting. Use the launcher’s file-check feature instead of deleting or replacing game files yourself.
Steam
In Steam, open the game’s Library page and use its Properties menu to find the installed-files verification option. Steam’s file verification guidance explains the process. The check can take several minutes, so let it finish before trying other system-intensive tasks.

If Steam reports a missing executable, corrupted files or a failed download may be involved. Follow Steam’s missing-executable troubleshooting steps. If the game instead remains at “Preparing to Launch” and then stops, use Steam’s guidance for games that do not run after preparing to launch.

4. Check requirements and game-specific support notices
Compare your PC with the game’s official minimum system requirements, then check the publisher’s support page for the exact title and any current launch notices. A PC can meet a game’s requirements and still encounter a separate software or configuration issue, so treat the comparison as one check rather than a diagnosis.
Steam’s general launch troubleshooting guidance includes checking Windows updates and required components. Follow instructions for a particular driver, runtime, BIOS setting, or compatibility change only when they come from the game’s publisher or the relevant hardware or software vendor and fit your situation.

5. Check for security-software blocks without disabling protection
Security software is one possible cause, not proof of what is wrong. Capcom notes in its Steam game troubleshooting guidance that security software can sometimes prevent a game executable from launching.

If it does, follow the publisher’s instructions for that title and your security software. Do not switch off antivirus or firewall protection wholesale. Change overlays or background utilities only when the game’s support guidance identifies them as a plausible conflict.
6. Contact the game’s support team if it still will not launch
Once basic launcher checks are complete, send the game’s publisher or support team enough information to investigate the specific failure:
- Game title and launcher
- Exact error wording or code, or a clear description of what happens after clicking Play
- Windows version and relevant PC details
- Recent game, driver, or system changes
- Steps you have already tried and what happened
Steam recommends contacting the game’s support team when launch troubleshooting does not resolve the issue. For a problem that appears specific to one PC configuration and persists after supported checks, Steam also notes that help from a local PC technician may be appropriate: Steam launch troubleshooting.
