What to Do When a New Gadget Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth

Use a low-risk checklist to work out whether a new gadget’s connection problem comes from Bluetooth pairing, Wi-Fi compatibility, the host device or the router.

First identify whether the gadget needs to join your Wi-Fi network, pair directly with Bluetooth, or use both during app setup. Then check compatibility, power and setup mode before changing router settings or resetting saved networks. These steps help pinpoint whether the problem is the gadget, the phone or computer, or the network.

1. Identify the connection the gadget needs

Check the product specifications and setup instructions: a gadget may connect to your home network over Wi-Fi, connect directly to a phone or computer over Bluetooth, or rely on both for setup. Confirm that your host device supports the required connection. For example, Microsoft notes that some Windows computers do not include Bluetooth; see Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.

2. Check power, radio settings and distance

  • Charge the gadget or replace its batteries if appropriate. A device with too little power may not be discoverable or stay connected.
  • Turn the gadget off and back on, and make sure Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is enabled on the phone, tablet or computer.
  • Keep the gadget close to the host during Bluetooth pairing. For Wi-Fi setup, follow the maker’s directions about distance from the router.

Apple and Microsoft both include charge and proximity among basic Bluetooth checks: Apple’s Bluetooth connection guidance and Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps.

3. If Bluetooth won’t connect

Put the gadget in pairing mode

Use the gadget maker’s instructions to enter pairing or discovery mode. Turning a device on does not necessarily make it visible to nearby phones or computers. The exact button, light pattern or timing varies by product, so do not assume one model’s procedure applies to another. Microsoft’s guidance is that the Bluetooth device must be in pairing mode and within range of the PC: Microsoft Support.

Remove an old pairing and try again

If the gadget appears in the saved Bluetooth devices list but will not connect, remove or unpair it, put it back into pairing mode, and pair it again. If it connects to a different phone or computer, disconnect or unpair it there before trying the intended host; some accessories will not connect to another host while still connected to the first.

Check the host computer

On Windows, install available system updates and restart the computer before retrying. If Bluetooth is missing or unavailable, or no Bluetooth accessories connect, contact the computer maker or host-device support. Microsoft’s steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so do not rely on it for ongoing free updates.

When an adapter may help: If a Windows PC has no Bluetooth hardware, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter for PC can add Bluetooth capability. Check compatibility with the computer and operating system. An adapter will not fix a gadget that is not charged or in pairing mode, nor will it solve Wi-Fi or router problems. Microsoft describes using a USB Bluetooth adapter in its Windows device setup instructions.

4. If the gadget won’t join Wi-Fi

Check the Wi-Fi band and network

Look up the Wi-Fi bands the gadget supports in its specifications or setup guide. Some smart-home devices support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only and cannot join a 5 GHz network. Follow the device’s instructions for the setup phone and network; some setups require the phone and gadget to use the same network. Apple and Google provide product-specific setup guidance: Apple’s Wi-Fi accessory guidance and Google Nest’s Wi-Fi setup troubleshooting.

If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name, check its app or documentation for a supported way to select or temporarily expose the required band. Avoid changing advanced security settings unless the router or gadget maker gives instructions for your exact model.

Test the network and isolate the failing part

  1. Check whether another phone, computer or Wi-Fi device can get online using the same network.
  2. Power-cycle the modem and router, then wait for them to reconnect before trying the gadget again. Follow the provider’s or router maker’s restart instructions.
  3. If other devices also cannot get online, contact your internet provider.
  4. If other devices work but this gadget does not, try setting it up on another Wi-Fi network if one is available. If it fails on multiple networks, contact the gadget maker. If it works elsewhere, the issue is more likely related to the home router’s settings or compatibility.

Google’s setup troubleshooting also recommends checking the network and restarting equipment: Google Nest Help.

5. Consider interference and resets only after basic checks

Bluetooth and many Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4 GHz band. Apple notes that moving Wi-Fi devices to 5 GHz may help where those devices and the router support it, while distance and barriers such as metal can weaken signals. This is a possible interference remedy, not proof that interference is the cause. See Apple’s guidance on potential Wi-Fi and Bluetooth interference.

Save network-settings resets for later: on Apple devices, resetting network settings removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords. Try the compatibility, band, distance and router checks first. If the problem persists, consult the relevant device maker’s model-specific reset instructions before proceeding.

Where to get help based on what fails

  • Only one gadget fails on multiple Wi-Fi networks or hosts: contact the gadget maker.
  • Bluetooth is missing on the computer, or no accessories connect: contact the computer or host-device maker.
  • Several devices cannot use the home Wi-Fi: contact the internet provider after restarting the modem and router.
  • The gadget works on another network, but not at home: check router band and setup compatibility with the router or gadget maker.
