If your MacBook Air will not charge, stops around 80%, or loses power faster than expected, check the status in macOS before replacing anything. An 80% pause may be intentional battery management; other common causes include an unsuitable adapter or cable, heat, demanding workloads, or a battery or hardware fault. Work through the checks below in order, using the charging guidance for your exact MacBook Air model.
Start with the battery status and charge limit
Open the Battery status menu in the menu bar and review System Settings > Battery. The wording helps distinguish a normal pause from a charging problem.

- “Charging On Hold” can mean Optimized Battery Charging is delaying a charge past 80% because macOS predicts the Mac will remain connected to power. Apple says it is normal for a Mac laptop to stop charging before 100% to optimize or extend battery life.
- “Charged to [%] Limit” indicates that a charge limit may be configured. Review the Battery settings and adjust the limit if you want a higher charge.
- If you need a full charge right away, select “Charge to Full Now” from the Battery status menu when that option appears.
A pause near 80% alone does not show that the battery has failed. If the Mac remains at a low charge or reports “Not Charging,” continue with the power and temperature checks.

Charging depends on the complete power path. A Mac may run from an adapter that does not provide enough power to charge its battery, particularly while the computer is under load.

- Test the outlet with another device or use a known-working outlet.
- Disconnect the charger and inspect the adapter, cable, and Mac charging port for damage. Stop using any damaged component.
- If the port appears to contain debris, disconnect power and clean it gently with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not probe the port with tools.
- Use a cable designed for charging. If possible, test with another suitable cable and adapter.
- Check Apple’s charging guidance for your exact MacBook Air model and choose a compatible adapter with sufficient wattage.
MacBook Air configurations differ in their supported adapters and charging connections. Apple lists 30 W, 35 W, and optional 67 W or 70 W USB-C adapters for specified 13-inch and 15-inch configurations; these are examples tied to particular configurations, not universal requirements. Apple describes the 70 W option as supporting fast charging up to 50% in around 30 minutes for those configurations. Verify your model’s guidance before buying an adapter or cable. A higher-wattage option is useful only where supported and is not necessary for every Air.
Let a hot Mac cool and improve ventilation
Apple says Mac laptops work best at ambient temperatures from 10° to 35° C (50° to 95° F). If the computer feels hot, move it to a cooler, well-ventilated place and let it cool. Charging may pause at 80% if recommended battery temperatures are exceeded.

Keep the Mac uncovered, with airflow around it; avoid using it on thick carpeting or another surface that blocks ventilation. Check the charge status again after it has cooled.

Check whether workload is causing fast drain
Video editing, games, other demanding apps, connected devices, and a bright display can increase power use. Apple notes that a workload can consume power faster than the power source supplies it, making a connected Mac appear not to charge.

- In System Settings > Battery, review recent energy usage for apps or activity that may be consuming unusually high power.
- Lower display brightness and disconnect peripherals you are not using.
- Close an app you do not need, or try Low Power Mode when its performance trade-off is acceptable.
If the battery drain improves after reducing activity, the immediate issue may be power consumption rather than a failed charging component.
Review Battery Health and macOS
In System Settings > Battery, check Battery Health and maximum capacity if those details are shown for your Mac. Use the status macOS reports; a third-party battery app’s estimate by itself does not establish that the battery is faulty. If macOS reports Service Recommended, arrange service rather than relying on software estimates.

Install available macOS updates and restart the Mac. Power-management steps depend on the processor: restarting is the Apple guidance for resetting power management on Apple silicon Macs, while Intel Macs may require an SMC reset procedure. Identify which processor your Mac has before following an SMC reset guide; it is not a universal step for every MacBook Air.
Run Apple Diagnostics and get service if the problem persists
If charging still fails after checking the source, cable, adapter, port, temperature, settings, and workload, run Apple Diagnostics for your Mac and contact Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. Seek service as well if Battery Health says Service Recommended or the charging fault continues with known-working, model-compatible equipment.

Avoid untrained repairs or non-genuine parts: Apple cautions that they can affect safety and functionality. Choose replacement charging equipment only after confirming the MacBook Air generation, connector, and required adapter configuration.
