If it has passed, you cannot change the active XI: check your saved bench order and let automatic substitutions process after the Gameweek. In Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a rested player is replaced automatically only if he makes no appearance that Gameweek; even a brief substitute appearance rules out the automatic sub.
Before the deadline: decide whether to start him
FPL’s Gameweek deadline is normally 90 minutes before the first match, though deadlines can change. Check the current deadline in the game and make any changes before it. The Premier League’s FPL FAQ says changes made after the deadline—including changes to the starting XI and substitution priorities—take effect only from the following Gameweek.

If reliable team news suggests your defender is likely to be rested and a bench option is likely to play, you can swap them before the cutoff. Treat reports as evidence, not certainty: weigh the chance that your defender starts and delivers points against the alternative’s likely minutes and potential. After making a change, save it.
After the deadline: what happens to a rested defender?
You cannot manually repair the current Gameweek lineup once the deadline has passed. FPL processes automatic substitutions at the end of the Gameweek, after the matches have been played. A starting outfield player must make no appearance during the Gameweek to qualify. If your defender comes on for even a few minutes in any scheduled fixture that Gameweek, he stays in your team and no outfield substitute replaces him.

Your bench order is a priority, not a guarantee
FPL considers your outfield substitutes in the order saved on your bench, but the first substitute enters only if he played in the Gameweek and the resulting team still satisfies formation rules. The Premier League’s FPL team-management guidance explains that a replacement must not break those rules.
Your team must retain at least three defenders, two midfielders and one forward, as well as a goalkeeper. For example, if you started with three defenders and one does not play, a midfielder cannot replace him because that would leave fewer than three defenders; an eligible defender is needed. If the first bench player is ineligible or would break the formation, FPL can consider the next eligible outfield substitute in your saved order.

The goalkeeper is handled separately: if your starting goalkeeper does not play, the reserve goalkeeper replaces him only if that reserve played.

Should you transfer the defender out next week?
One reported rest is not, by itself, proof that a defender has lost his place. Before using a transfer, consider whether the news points to a continuing rotation risk, whether your bench can cover future absences, and whether another position has a more urgent need.

- Expected starts and minutes: Distinguish a one-off rest from a sustained risk of rotation. Avoid treating uncertain team news as a confirmed change.
- Bench cover: A substitute who is likely to play can reduce the impact of an absence, but formation rules may prevent that player from entering in some lineups.
- Fixtures: FPL’s Fixture Difficulty Rating is an aid to fixture and selection planning, not a guarantee of points. The Premier League says it is reviewed weekly.
- Scoring profile: Defenders can earn points for clean sheets and attacking returns. FPL also awards two points for qualifying defensive contributions. A clean-sheet point requires at least 60 minutes played, excluding stoppage time. These rules help assess value but do not predict whether a particular player will start or score.
- Transfer opportunity cost: Consider whether saving the transfer would be more useful for an injury, suspension, blank Gameweek or another squad need.
The Premier League FPL guidance and FAQ are the authoritative places to check current rules and deadlines. Team news, fixtures and game rules can change, so verify the latest information before the next deadline.
