Mark, sign, and seal the return envelope
Follow the ballot instructions, sign the return envelope where indicated, and seal it before sending or delivering it. Imperial County’s 2026 election announcement says no postage is required for a mailed ballot returned in the supplied envelope. Missing or mismatched signatures and late arrival are among the reasons a ballot may not be counted, according to the California Secretary of State’s vote-by-mail guidance.

Choose a return method and meet its deadline
Use one of the return options listed below. The county’s general guidance says a mailed ballot must be postmarked by Election Day and received by the Registrar of Voters within seven days after the election. For hand delivery, the county’s 2026 election notice gives an 8:00 p.m. Election Day cutoff. Check the current election page for the deadline and location details for your election.
Return method What to know Mail The ballot must be postmarked on or before Election Day and arrive at the Registrar of Voters within seven days after the election, under the county’s general guidance. The Secretary of State advises mailing at least five days before Election Day to help ensure an Election Day postmark. Official drop box Use only a drop box listed by Imperial County for that election. Opening dates and hours are election-specific. For example, the county’s 2026 notice said boxes would be open 24 hours beginning May 4 and close at 8:00 p.m. on that election’s Election Day; those dates do not apply to later elections. Registrar’s Office or county Vote Center You may hand-deliver your ballot to the Registrar’s Office or any county Vote Center by the applicable cutoff. The county’s 2026 notice set that cutoff at 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. Confirm current hours and locations before traveling. Imperial County says it moved to Vote Centers in 2026, replacing traditional polling sites. Voters may go to any county Vote Center for in-person voting and assistance. Use the county’s election listings to find current sites and hours.

If the ballot does not arrive
Check that your registration is active and your address is current, then contact the Registrar of Voters at (442) 265-1060 for ballot-status help. The county’s election page provides current instructions and election-specific information.
If you forgot to sign or the signature does not match

- Choose mail if convenience matters most and you can mail early enough to meet both the postmark and receipt requirements.
- Choose an official drop box if you want to avoid postal transit but can reach a currently listed box during its open period.
- Choose the Registrar’s Office or a Vote Center if you prefer an in-person handoff or need help, and can get there before the applicable Election Day cutoff.
For every option, use the county’s current election listings rather than relying on locations or hours from a previous election.
