What to Do When a Hard Drive Starts Clicking, Disconnecting, or Running Slowly

Unusual clicking plus slow reads or repeated disconnects can put data at risk. Know when to stop powering the drive, back up accessible files, and get recovery help.

If a hard drive is clicking unusually and also disconnecting or taking a long time to read files, treat the data as at risk. If the files matter, shut the system down and stop powering the drive; contact a professional data-recovery provider before running scans or repair tools. If the drive is stable and accessible without worsening symptoms, copy your most valuable files to separate storage first. A click or disconnect can have less serious causes, but troubleshooting should not come before protecting data.

What to do first

  1. If the sound is persistent, metallic, grinding, scraping, or otherwise unusual, stop using the drive. This is especially important when reads are slow or the drive repeatedly disconnects. Seagate advises shutting down immediately and not powering the drive back up when unusual noise may indicate physical failure. Do not keep restarting it to see if it recovers. Seagate’s noise guidance explains this precaution.
  2. If the drive remains stable and you can read files without unusual or worsening noise, copy irreplaceable files first. Copy them to a separate drive, not another folder on the suspect drive. WD advises backing up an accessible drive that may be failing, and Seagate describes an external USB hard drive as a convenient backup destination. Do not leave the suspect drive as the only place a file exists. WD’s drive-noise guidance and Seagate’s FAQ cover these steps.
  3. If the data matters and the drive shows signs of physical distress, stop before software scans or repair attempts. Contact a professional data-recovery provider for advice. Seagate warns that DIY utilities may use a problem drive and worsen failure; its FAQ recommends professional recovery in relevant cases.
  4. Do not format the drive or change its partitions if you need to recover data. Seagate warns that those actions can permanently lose data. Read its data-loss precautions.

Does clicking mean the hard drive is failing?

Not necessarily. WD says some drives click during startup, while waking from idle, when changing from idle to active, or when heads park. It also notes that some helium-based drives can make random clicks. The sound alone does not establish a fault. WD’s guidance on drive noise describes these normal possibilities.

The pattern matters more than one isolated click. Persistent unusual clicking, grinding or scraping, especially alongside slow reads or repeated disconnections, raises concern for physical failure. Seagate says unusual noise may indicate physical failure and advises shutting down and not powering up again in that situation. A remote description cannot confirm what has failed, so when the data is valuable, respond to the combined warning signs rather than trying to diagnose the mechanism yourself. Seagate’s FAQ gives its safety guidance.

Why an external drive may keep disconnecting

A disconnect does not always mean the drive itself is damaged. WD lists loose or faulty cables, sleep or standby behavior, filesystem issues, WD password protection, and computer or BIOS problems among possible causes. WD’s disconnect troubleshooting guide describes these possibilities.

Only isolate connection causes if the drive does not show physical distress. For a stable drive, try a known-good cable, another port, or another computer, changing one thing at a time. If it is making persistent unusual noises, reads slowly, or repeatedly disconnects, do not keep unplugging and reconnecting it to test every possibility; stop and seek recovery guidance instead.

When to run diagnostics—and when not to

Protect the files before assessing drive health. SMART is a monitoring and reporting system, not a guarantee that data is safe. WD says a SMART error indicates risk and calls for prompt backup; individual attribute meanings and thresholds are defined by the manufacturer. A clean-looking result should not overrule persistent concerning symptoms. WD’s SMART guidance explains its limits.

Seagate says a failing SeaTools result calls for immediate backup and drive replacement. But a lengthy scan or stress test is not a sensible first move when the drive already clicks unusually or appears physically distressed: seek recovery advice before putting it through more use. Seagate’s SeaTools FAQ describes what to do with a failing result.

Do not start with chkdsk, filesystem repair, defragmentation, or recovery software if the data is not backed up and physical failure is possible. WD cautions that chkdsk can cause data loss and says to have a backup on another drive before using it; Seagate warns against recovery utilities when unusual noise may indicate mechanical failure. WD’s chkdsk guidance and Seagate’s noise FAQ cover these risks.

How to approach professional data recovery

If files are valuable and persistent clicking occurs with slow access, repeated disconnections, or other obvious distress, stop powering the drive and ask a recovery provider what to do next. WD does not provide data recovery itself and lists third-party partners; it says agreements are between the user and provider and disclaims warranty or reliability of their services. Seagate also advises professional recovery when unusual noise suggests physical failure. WD’s recovery information and Seagate’s FAQ explain their respective guidance.

Before choosing a provider, ask directly about its location and service coverage, evaluation process, total cost, data confidentiality, and terms. The manufacturers’ guidance does not establish one provider as best, and WD disclaims responsibility for the services of its listed partners.
