If a hard drive is repeatedly clicking, grinding, or scraping and it contains files you need, stop using it. Power it down if you hear grinding, and contact a professional data recovery service before running diagnostics or repair tools. A single soft click does not prove failure; the sound, whether it is changing, and whether the drive is still accessible determine the safest next step.
First decide whether your data is at risk
Put the files first, not the drive. Seagate advises contacting data recovery services before troubleshooting when data on a persistently clicking or grinding drive is essential. Its internal-drive guidance says to power down promptly if you hear grinding. Repeated starts and scans can keep a physically troubled drive operating when it may be safer to stop.

- Important files plus repeated hard clicks, clunks, grinding, or scraping: stop using the drive. If it is grinding, power it down. Contact a recovery service before testing or troubleshooting. Do not keep restarting it, format it, or run recovery software that repeatedly reads the disk.
- Occasional soft clicking and normal operation: some clicking or chattering during reads and writes can be normal. Back up important files and pay attention to whether the sound is new, persistent, or becoming harsher.
- Drive disappears, but there are no severe mechanical sounds and files remain accessible: back up what you can first. Then check the connection and power, using the steps below.
- Drive is accessible and backed up: a manufacturer diagnostic can help assess its condition. If it fails, replace the drive rather than continuing to rely on it.
These are manufacturer recommendations, not a way to diagnose every model by sound alone. Seagate’s guidance distinguishes ordinary operating noise from persistent, harsh sounds that may signal a physical problem: Identifying Hard Drive Sounds and Determining What They Mean.

| Symptom | What it may indicate | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional soft click or chatter while the drive is active | Can be normal read/write activity; some drives may also scan while idle. | Back up important files and monitor for a new, persistent, or worsening sound. |
| Repeated hard clicking, clunking, grinding, or scraping | May indicate a physical problem. Seagate warns that continued use during grinding can make recovery harder. | If files matter, stop using it; power down for grinding and contact a recovery service before troubleshooting. |
| Beeping or failure to spin on an external drive | May be related to insufficient power or a cable or power issue, though it does not rule out drive trouble. | Check power and connections only if doing so does not involve risky repeated operation. |
| Drive disappears or is not detected | Could be a connection or power problem, or a drive failure. | Protect accessible files first. If abnormal mechanical sounds accompany the problem, stop and seek recovery advice. |
| Slow access without abnormal sounds | Slowness alone does not establish mechanical failure. | Back up accessible files, then check drive health if the drive remains stable. |
Seagate recommends confirming that the noise is actually coming from the drive rather than a fan or another computer component. Its SeaTools Bootable manual describes an acoustic spin-down test for internal drives, but do not run extra tests on a suspect drive when important data and signs of physical failure make continued operation risky.

How to check an external drive that disappears
Use connection checks only when there are no severe mechanical sounds and the data situation makes it reasonable to keep operating the drive. If files are accessible, copy them somewhere safe before extended troubleshooting.
- Connect the drive directly to the computer, bypassing any USB hub.
- Try another USB port. On a desktop computer, Seagate suggests trying a rear port.
- Replace the cable with one known to work with another device.
- Confirm the drive has compatible power. A powered hub may help if the drive is not receiving enough power, but it is not a fix for mechanical failure.
- If the drive still is not detected and remains quiet, test it on another computer. Stop repeated attempts if it starts making abnormal sounds.

When to run diagnostics—and when not to
Diagnostics belong after the data decision. If the drive is backed up, remains functional, and has no warning sounds, use the manufacturer’s diagnostic tool to check its status. Seagate recommends SeaTools when a user is concerned about drive noise. A failed test supports replacing the drive, not trusting it with the only copy of important files.
If the drive is persistently clicking or grinding and you need its data, do not make a diagnostic scan your first step. Seagate says to contact data recovery services before troubleshooting in that situation. Its Internal Hard Drive Troubleshooter specifically advises powering down an internal drive that is grinding.

Choose between professional recovery and replacement
Recovery and replacement solve different problems: recovery is an attempt to retrieve files from the existing drive; replacement provides a place to store data going forward. A new external hard drive, cable, or software does not restore files from the old disk.
| Consideration | Professional recovery | Accept data loss and replace |
|---|---|---|
| Files are unique or important | Ask a professional service about the recovery process and terms before further use. | Suitable only if losing the files is acceptable or another copy exists. |
| Repeated hard clicks or grinding | Stop using the drive and seek advice before troubleshooting. | Replace the drive for future storage after deciding what to do about the old data. |
| Drive remains accessible | If data is valuable and warning sounds persist, access alone is not a guarantee of safety. | Back up accessible files before retiring the drive. |
| Cost and likely outcome | Ask the provider directly; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish neutral prices or success rates, and recovery is not guaranteed. | Choose replacement if the data is backed up or its loss is acceptable. |
Seagate points users toward recovery services. Western Digital also provides a data recovery and partner information page; WD says the service agreement is between the user and provider and disclaims responsibility for that service. Review a provider’s terms and process before proceeding.

What not to do with a suspect drive
- Do not repeatedly restart or keep using a drive that is grinding or making persistent harsh clicks.
- Do not format it or run general repair and recovery software as a first response when physical failure is possible and the files matter.
- Do not open the sealed drive, freeze it, tap it, or swap its circuit board. These are not recommended by the manufacturer guidance cited here and may worsen the data risk.
- Do not mistake a replacement drive for a recovery solution. Decide what to do about the original drive before putting it aside.
