When The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt won’t launch on PC, first identify what is failing: REDlauncher, the game itself, a missing-DLC check, or a modded installation. Then follow the matching steps below, starting with file verification and other low-impact checks. Save a clean reinstall for last because it removes game folders and requires careful save protection.
Identify what happens when The Witcher 3 won’t launch on PC
Use the symptom and any recent change to choose a path; a launcher that never opens is different from a game that starts and then crashes.

- REDlauncher does not open: follow the launcher-specific steps below.
- The game starts, then crashes or shows a generic error: verify its files, then use the startup-crash checks.
- An error explicitly says DLCs are missing: use the dedicated missing-DLC sequence; do not remove the DLC folder for an unrelated crash.
- The problem began after installing or updating mods: disable mods and test, keeping in mind their effects may persist in saves.
- The issue followed a game update or file change: file verification is a suitable early step.
CD PROJEKT RED’s support guidance describes corrupted game files as a possible cause of crashes, graphical glitches, or failure to launch. It does not publish a statistic showing how often any one cause is responsible.

If REDlauncher will not open
REDlauncher has its own troubleshooting path. These steps address the launcher, not the integrity of the installed game files.
#1 Best Overall
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
- Close the store client. Right-click Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or GOG GALAXY and choose Run as administrator, then try launching the game.
- If REDlauncher still fails, remove the folder
%localappdata%ProgramsCD Projekt Red. Windows expands%localappdata%to your local AppData folder. - Check that you are not using launch parameters for the game, then try again.
If the launcher remains broken, contact CD PROJEKT RED through its PC support page.
Witcher 3 missing files: verify or repair the installation
Use the repair command for the storefront that owns your copy. Verification can take several minutes. It checks the installation and replaces or repairs files as needed; it is a reasonable first step after a failed update or suspected file corruption.
| Storefront | Verification path |
|---|---|
| GOG GALAXY | Owned games → select The Witcher 3 → Customize → Manage installation → Verify/Repair |
| Steam | Library → right-click The Witcher 3 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files |
| Epic Games Launcher | Library → three-dot menu for the game → Manage → Verify |
| Battle.net | Games → gear icon next to Play → Scan and Repair → Begin Scan |
These paths follow CD PROJEKT RED’s file-verification instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWitcher 3 says DLCs are missing
Use this sequence only when the error specifically reports missing DLCs. Removing the DLC folder is not a general crash fix.
- Remove installed mods.
- Delete the
DLCfolder from the game’s installation directory. - Run the storefront’s verify or repair command using the path above.
The publisher’s dedicated missing-DLC instructions prescribe this order.
Witcher 3 crashes on startup
Move through the checks in order. If an error code appears, write it down exactly; include it in a support request rather than relying on a paraphrase.
Check requirements and close other software
- Compare your PC with the publisher’s current PC requirements.
- Close nonessential applications. CD PROJEKT RED’s crash guidance also suggests temporarily closing antivirus or antimalware software; if you suspect malware, check the system rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Verify the game files through your storefront.
Check graphics drivers and startup conflicts
If the earlier checks do not help, CD PROJEKT RED recommends a clean graphics-driver reinstall. Its driver guidance says, “If you experience crashes or performance issues, make sure you have the latest graphics drivers installed.” The crash guidance also notes that an older driver can sometimes help with crashes, so a recent update that coincides with the problem may be relevant.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The publisher’s launch guidance also recommends reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables, disabling unnecessary programs and overlays, and trying a clean boot. Listed overlay or utility examples include GeForce Experience, RivaTuner, MSI Afterburner, MSI Gaming app, and Fraps. Change one thing at a time where practical, then retry the game so you can tell whether a change mattered.
Witcher 3 won’t launch with mods
Mods can cause crashes or prevent launch, and disabling one does not necessarily undo changes already written into a save. CD PROJEKT RED warns: “Using mods may lead to unexpected, incorrect behavior of the game and their consequences may be kept in save files.”
- Disable or unsubscribe installed mods through the in-game Mod Menu, then test the game.
- Update mods, particularly if the game itself has recently updated.
- If the issue began after using third-party PC mods, test a clean installation without them.
- If the problem remains in a mod-affected save, try an earlier save from before the mod was used. The publisher advises against installing mods that alter quest structure during a playthrough.
For mod-related issues, see CD PROJEKT RED’s guidance on reporting in-game mod issues, which also addresses third-party PC mods.

Check current Windows and storage requirements
CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements say an SSD is required for the game’s latest technical enhancements, which the publisher associates with faster loading, smoother asset streaming, and improved overall performance. This is a requirements check, not evidence that lacking an SSD causes every launch failure.

The same requirements page says Windows 10 is no longer officially supported. The publisher says the game may continue to run on Windows 10, but it no longer develops or tests on that system and cannot guarantee compatibility or performance. Neither the SSD requirement nor the Windows support change proves the cause of an individual failure.
The requirements page states a target of “60 FPS or higher at Minimum settings” for the GTX 1660 selected as the minimum NVIDIA GPU in its updated requirements discussion. That is not a guarantee for every PC; the publisher says observed performance varies with scene, system configuration, settings, and resolution.
Clean reinstall: protect saves and test before restoring them
A clean reinstall removes folders, so do this only after less disruptive checks. Follow the publisher’s sequence and do not assume cloud saves alone are a backup.
- Back up saves, normally found in
%userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. - Disable The Witcher 3 cloud saves in the storefront client.
- Uninstall the game.
- Remove the game folder from the client’s installation directory and remove the The Witcher 3 folder from Documents.
- Restart the PC, reinstall the game without mods, and test it before restoring saves.
- After testing, restore the backed-up saves and re-enable cloud saves if desired.
If Windows permissions prevent installation on the operating-system partition, CD PROJEKT RED suggests installing at the drive root rather than inside nested folders. See the publisher’s clean-install instructions for the full procedure.
