What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First, identify where the Fallout mod disappeared: the manager’s Mods list, its Plugins or load-order list, or the game itself. Those symptoms have different causes. A missing plugin entry does not necessarily mean the mod is gone: asset-only mods such as texture replacers may have no ESP or ESM file, and in Vortex the Plugins screen shows deployed plugin files rather than every installed mod.
Start by identifying what is missing
- Missing from the Mods list: Check that the manager is set to the intended Fallout game and profile. Then check whether the mod’s downloaded archive or staged installation is still available. A mod entry, its installed files, and its original archive are separate things.
- Present in Mods but missing from Plugins or load order: Check whether the mod includes an ESP or ESM plugin at all. Texture replacers and other asset-only mods may not. In Vortex, the Plugins screen lists deployed plugin files, not all installed mods. Nexus Mods’ Vortex FAQ puts it plainly: “The Plugins screen in Vortex only shows deployed files.”
- Present in the manager but not affecting the game: Check whether it is enabled and deployed. Vortex keeps staged mod files in a separate mod directory and links active files into the game directory when it deploys them. An installed mod can therefore be present in the manager without its files currently being active in the game.
Check the mod’s status and deployment in Vortex
- Open Vortex and select the intended Fallout game and profile.
- Open Mods and find the mod. Check its status. If it is disabled, enable it only if you intend to use it.
- If deployment is pending, or automatic deployment is off, use Vortex’s deploy action and check whether the expected files or plugin appear. Disabled mods have their deployed links removed.
Do not use Purge as the first recovery step. Vortex purge removes mod links from the game directory but does not uninstall or delete the staged mods; deploying again can restore the links. Use it only when you have a specific reason to clear deployed links and understand that it changes files linked into the game directory.

If Vortex has no Plugins tab
For Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4 in Vortex, investigate the load-order extension before reinstalling the manager. Open Extensions, show bundled extensions, and check Gamebryo Plugin Management. Vortex’s troubleshooting guidance says the Plugins tab is usually absent because this extension failed to initialize. If it is disabled, enable it and restart Vortex. The Vortex troubleshooting guidance also recommends installing the latest Visual C++ Redistributable x64; if the tab remains absent, security software may be blocking the module. Keep this diagnosis to the named Fallout games and Vortex rather than assuming identical behavior across every game or manager.

In Vortex’s Mods list, a blank Archive Name column means the original downloaded archive is no longer available. It does not by itself establish that the installed mod and its files are gone. Check the mod entry and its status separately from the archive indicator. Vortex’s fundamentals guide explains that removing a mod while retaining its archive can leave it available to reinstall, while choosing Delete Archive removes that download.

If both the installed files and archive are gone, do not assume a removed or unavailable mod page can be recovered. Use a copy you already own or a source approved by the mod’s author; availability of a new download is not guaranteed.
For Fallout 4, check configuration only after status and deployment
If a Fallout 4 mod is installed and deployed but its loose files still do not affect the game, archive invalidation may be relevant for that mod. A community-authored Fallout 4 troubleshooting guide also discusses possible antivirus interference with game or mod-manager executables and recommends whitelisting relevant executables in applicable cases. Treat these as conditional checks, not universal fixes; do not broadly disable antivirus protection. This advice is specific to Fallout 4 and should not be assumed to apply to Fallout 3 or New Vegas.

If the mod itself has disappeared online
A missing page or deleted download is different from a local display or deployment problem, and there is no general recovery route established for every mod. Before seeking more specific help, note the mod’s name, the manager and Fallout game you use, where it disappeared (Mods list, Plugins list, or in-game), and whether its archive or installed files remain on disk.

This is relevant only if the missing mod is part of a manager migration. Nexus Mods’ support FAQ says development of the Nexus Mods app has stopped and development is focused on Vortex. It describes no direct automatic migration path; its practical suggestion is to recreate or re-download the mod list in Vortex. That is separate from troubleshooting an ordinary missing entry in Vortex.
