First, identify where the mod is hosted
Disclosure rules depend on the host. Nexus Mods’ current requirements apply to listings on Nexus Mods; do not assume they govern mods hosted elsewhere or content distributed through an official publisher channel. For Fallout 4, Nexus Mods distinguishes official Creation Club content from other creator content, which it treats as unofficial under its policy. Check the rules for the specific host and item you are evaluating.

What Nexus Mods’ AI tags mean
Nexus Mods’ File Submission Guidelines, last updated September 29, 2026, require specific tags for generative-AI use in a mod or its page. The three categories distinguish generated content from page media and limited assistance.

The platform says authors are responsible for verifying claims on their pages, including claims about content generated or assisted by third-party tools. Incorrect or missing tags may lead to moderation; a disclosure is useful evidence about the author’s claim, not independent forensic proof of how every file was made.

Check the page and the mod separately
- Read the tags and disclosure. On a Nexus Mods listing, look for AI-Generated Content, AI Media, and AI Assisted. Note whether the author identifies the downloadable content, page media, or both.
- Inspect the description and media on their own. A thumbnail, promotional video, or description may fall under AI Media without saying anything about whether the in-game content was generated.
- Find the specific component involved. If a creator discloses AI use, identify whether it applies to code, a texture or other asset, voice, dialogue, translation, music, or another element. “This mod uses AI” is less informative than naming the affected part.
- For “AI-assisted,” look for process evidence. Nexus Mods gives project or version-control history, evidence of human-led design, and demonstrated knowledge of how the code or content works as examples. These are stated expectations, not records every author is guaranteed to publish.
What counts as evidence—and what does not
An author’s specific disclosure is relevant evidence, as is credible documentation that corroborates it. But the platform’s tagging rules do not provide a universal way to determine authorship from a file’s appearance. The official sources cited here do not validate AI detectors for game-mod images, voices, text, or code, so a detector score or stylistic impression should not be treated as a finding.
A missing tag also cannot certify that no AI was used. Nexus Mods says tagging is required and that inaccurate categorization may be moderated; those rules do not establish that every author complies or let a reader infer provenance from silence. If you see something unusual, describe it as a question to investigate unless an author statement or corroborating evidence supports a factual claim.

Keep AI disclosure separate from download safety
On Nexus Mods, file indicators in the Files tab report security checks and scanning status. They answer a different question from AI tags: a passed scan is not an AI-authorship certificate, and a pending or failed scan is not evidence of AI use. Assess provenance and file security independently.
How to report a possible tagging problem
If a Nexus Mods page appears to be incorrectly categorized, use the host’s reporting process and describe the specific component and evidence. Its current guidelines say undisclosed generative-AI use may lead to moderation. Avoid making public accusations based only on appearance or intuition, and follow the platform’s current reporting guidance rather than relying on older policy posts.

Comparing two mods fairly
When comparing Fallout or Call of Duty mods, keep the evidence dimensions separate instead of turning disclosure into a verdict about quality or safety.
- Which AI category, if any, is disclosed, and what exact component does it cover?
- Is the use in the downloadable mod, the page media, or both?
- For an AI-assisted claim, how specific and credible is the evidence of developer-led work?
- Which host’s current rules apply?
- If download security matters too, what does the file-scan status say independently of AI disclosure?
Nexus Mods’ 2023 announcement described AI-generated mod content as not categorically against its rules at that time and discussed complaints from affected creators or rights holders. That is historical context; for present-day tagging requirements, use the current File Submission Guidelines. Neither that announcement nor the current tag taxonomy establishes how prevalent AI-made mods are or whether a particular mod used AI.
