First, check the transaction on the explorer for the network you used. A wallet’s activity screen is not always the network’s final word. If the explorer shows the transaction pending, the next step depends on the network: Ethereum-compatible wallets may offer a fee replacement or cancellation attempt, while Bitcoin uses different replacement rules. If the explorer shows a confirmed failure, diagnose it before retrying; on Ethereum, a failed transaction still consumes gas.
How to check whether a transaction is pending, failed, or confirmed
- Identify the network. Check which network you selected when sending. A transaction hash is meaningful on its own network, so do not look it up on an unrelated explorer.
- Open that network’s block explorer. Search using the transaction hash, or the public sending address if you do not have the hash. Compare the displayed addresses and amount with your wallet’s details.
- Read the network status. Determine whether the explorer shows a pending transaction, successful inclusion, inclusion with failure, or no matching transaction. These states call for different actions.
- Use wallet-specific instructions if the explorer does not show it. If only the wallet says “pending,” the display may reflect local activity rather than a live network transaction. MetaMask advises checking the explorer before trying a replacement or clearing local activity: MetaMask’s speed-up and cancellation guidance and its account activity reset guidance.
What to do if an Ethereum transaction is pending
A transaction can remain pending when its fee offer is too low for current network demand. Ethereum-compatible wallets may also flag insufficient native currency for gas or a gas limit that is too low under busy conditions. MetaMask lists these among possible causes; see its explanation of pending transactions. If the transfer is not urgent, waiting is an option. There is no fixed wait time that applies across changing network conditions.

Speed up: replace the transaction with a higher fee
If your wallet supports it, “Speed up” resubmits the same transaction with a higher fee. MetaMask says its speed-up option reuses the original nonce, the account’s transaction sequence number. If the replacement is included, you may pay more than you would have with the original fee. Review the wallet’s current fee estimate and confirmation screen before approving it.

Cancellation is not an undo button. On Ethereum’s nonce-based accounts, a wallet can attempt to displace a pending transaction by submitting a competing transaction with the same nonce. Ethereum.org describes a zero-value transaction sent to your own address as one cancellation method; MetaMask’s workflow also relies on the same nonce. The original is not safely treated as cancelled until the replacement is confirmed on the explorer.

Nonce order matters: later transactions from the same account can be held up behind an earlier pending nonce. If several transactions are pending, follow your wallet’s current instructions and handle the blocking nonce rather than assuming a later cancellation will clear the queue. Do not copy a fixed fee from an old screenshot or forum post; fee requirements change with demand. Ethereum.org’s current guidance is at its transaction documentation.
Clearing or resetting wallet activity affects the wallet’s local display; it does not erase a transaction that is still pending on the network. After any replacement attempt, search the explorer for the new transaction and confirm its status.

What to do if a Bitcoin transaction is pending
Bitcoin does not use Ethereum’s same-nonce cancellation workflow. Confirmation timing is probabilistic, and a fee below what the network is currently prioritizing can mean a longer wait. Bitcoin.org notes that blocks are added approximately every 10 minutes on average, but that is not a guaranteed interval for an individual transaction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReplacement depends on whether the transaction signals opt-in replace-by-fee (RBF) and on relay policy conditions. BIP 125 describes those conditions; consult the sending wallet’s Bitcoin-specific RBF or child-pays-for-parent (CPFP) instructions if available. Do not assume that every Bitcoin transaction can be replaced, or apply Ethereum wallet steps to it. See Bitcoin.org’s confirmation guidance and BIP 125.

What to do if a transaction is confirmed but failed
A confirmed failure is different from a pending transaction: waiting for inclusion or attempting a same-nonce cancellation will not undo it. On Ethereum, gas pays for computation whether execution succeeds or fails, as explained in Ethereum.org’s gas documentation.
Inspect the explorer’s transaction receipt and the error shown by your wallet or the application. Work out whether the cause was an incorrect input, a contract condition, or another execution problem before retrying. Raising only the fee will not necessarily correct a bad input or a condition the contract rejects.

Can support reverse a confirmed transaction?
No wallet support agent can roll back a transaction that has been confirmed on a public blockchain. If funds went to the wrong recipient, recovery depends on the recipient or other circumstances, not a network reversal. Ethereum.org states, “There is no company, support team, or help desk behind Ethereum.” For a self-custody wallet, contact its provider through the official support site; for an exchange account, use the exchange’s official website or app.

Never give anyone your seed phrase or private key to “recover” or cancel a transaction. Legitimate support should not need either. Ethereum.org’s support guidance explains where to seek help and warns about recovery scams.
