First, verify the notice through the blockchain project’s official status page, website, or software release channel. Then check which network and feature are affected and whether the instructions are for holders, node operators, validators, exchanges, or another service. Until the project confirms an affected action is available again, avoid using it. Do not migrate funds, update a wallet, or resend a payment based on a rumor or unsolicited support message.
There is no single response to every emergency upgrade: a project may require a software update before a fork, temporarily pause one transaction type, suspend a bridge, or recover the chain from an earlier point. The steps below help you identify what applies to your role and avoid making an incident worse.

What should you check first?
- Verify the source. Navigate to a project domain or release channel you already trust. Avoid links in unsolicited messages and search ads. For a software download, use the official project release source and verify its checksum or signature if provided.
- Confirm the exact network and asset. A token ticker alone may not identify the chain or bridge route involved. Check whether the announcement names a mainnet, sidechain, bridge, wallet feature, or specific transaction type.
- Read the scope and timing. Find out what is affected, what action is required, and the activation condition or restoration notice. Note whether the instruction applies to ordinary holders, node operators, validators, miners, exchanges, bridges, or wallet services.
- Check whether transaction history is changing. A pause or software upgrade is different from a rollback. If the project says it has restarted or recovered the chain from an earlier point, treat transactions from the affected period as unresolved until checked on the recovered chain.
- Keep records. Save transaction IDs, timestamps, exchange receipts, and trade records before taking further action.
Follow the project’s stated instructions, not assumptions based on the words “emergency” or “security upgrade.” In Firo’s 2026 hard-fork notice, for example, existing Spark coins, balances, addresses, and keys remained valid, while nodes that did not upgrade would become incompatible after activation. That was a project-specific instruction, not a general rule for other networks. Firo’s release and upgrade information

What should you do if you hold assets in a self-custody wallet?
- Check whether the notice asks holders to update their wallet, asks only node operators to upgrade, pauses a transaction type, or says no holder action is needed.
- Do not assume a security upgrade requires a seed phrase migration. Never enter a seed phrase or private key into a site or share it with support.
- If the affected chain, bridge, or transaction type is paused, wait for the official restoration notice before using it. Do not switch to another bridge or network unless the project explicitly says that route is safe.
- If no immediate holder action is prescribed, avoid speculative transfers and monitor the official status page for updates.
Firo’s 2026 mandatory hard fork illustrates why operators and holders should read the actual release notes: it set activation at block 1,371,000 and required wallet users and operators to upgrade before that point. Old nodes would no longer be compatible after activation. Those details apply to that fork only. Firo’s release and upgrade information

What if you use an exchange or custodian?
Check the exchange’s own notice and deposit/withdrawal status for the exact asset and network. An exchange may handle its systems separately from the blockchain project; trading, deposits, and withdrawals can have different availability. Zilliqa’s incident guidance, for example, directs users holding ZIL on an exchange to contact that exchange’s support. Zilliqa’s official site
Binance’s notice for a BNB Smart Chain upgrade scheduled for 2026-08-25 02:30 UTC said deposits and withdrawals would be paused shortly beforehand while trading would continue; transfers would reopen when the upgraded network was considered stable. That date is historical, not a current upgrade instruction, and the policy was specific to that exchange and event. Binance’s official announcements

If a deposit has not appeared, do not treat the delay alone as proof that funds are lost. Keep the transaction ID and contact the custodian through its official support route. Do not rely on a message from someone claiming they can recover funds in exchange for a fee or wallet credentials.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should a node, validator, miner, bridge, or wallet-service operator do?
- Read the project’s release notes and confirm the required software version, activation condition, and deadline or block height.
- Install software only from the project’s official channel. Verify checksums or signatures where the project provides them.
- Plan for dependent services. A chain upgrade does not establish that an exchange, bridge, wallet backend, hosted node, or other provider has upgraded too; check their status separately.
- Monitor the project’s official incident and release channels for changes to the activation time or recovery plan.
Project-specific deadlines matter: Firo’s 2026 notice tied its hard fork to block 1,371,000, while other upgrades may use different activation conditions or require no holder action. Do not reuse one network’s procedure for another.

Is it safe to send crypto during an emergency upgrade?
Only if the official notice says that the particular network and transaction type you intend to use remain available. Some incidents pause a narrow feature while other transfers continue; others disable a bridge or stop block production. Avoid the affected action until the project publishes a restoration notice or otherwise confirms it is available. A wallet showing a send button does not prove that the network or route is operating normally.
A feature may be paused while other transactions continue
Zcash temporarily disabled Orchard actions during remediation in 2026 while Sapling and transparent transactions continued operating, according to the Zcash Community Forum. The Orchard suspension lasted approximately 24 hours, and a later hard fork restored the feature with a corrected circuit. This is an example of a feature-specific response, not a general assurance that other transaction types will continue during an incident. Zcash Community Forum

A bridge may be paused while a mainchain remains available
Elastos reported that its mainchain was operating while ESC block production and bridge-mediated transfers were paused. Its notice told users not to initiate ELA-to-ESC or ESC-to-ELA transfers until a restoration notice. Check the project’s current incident notice before acting; the statement describes that incident, not present network status. Elastos official site
Should you move your coins before a hard fork?
Do not move coins simply because a hard fork has been announced. First establish whether the project requires an action from holders at all, and whether the proposed transfer would use an affected chain or feature. Some upgrades require operators to update their software while existing balances, addresses, and keys remain valid; others may pause transfers or alter chain history. Use only the project’s explicit instructions for that network and asset.

Do you need to update your wallet?
Check whether the project’s notice addresses wallet users or only node operators and service providers. If an update is required, get it from the official project channel and confirm the version and timing there. Do not install a wallet or “recovery” tool sent through an unsolicited message. Firo’s 2026 hard-fork guidance called for wallet users and operators to upgrade before activation, while its existing Spark coins, balances, addresses, and keys remained valid. That does not imply other projects have the same requirements. Firo’s release and upgrade information
What if a rollback means a previously confirmed transaction is missing?
Do not resend a payment based only on an old-chain explorer or wallet showing it as confirmed. Check its final status against the recovered chain and follow the project’s reconciliation guidance. Keep the transaction ID, timestamps, exchange records, and receipts; ask the project or custodian for the official process if the transaction is not present.
Zano’s 2026 recovery restarted from block height 3,833,000, immediately before Hard Fork 6, and affected approximately one month of chain history. The project said transactions confirmed during the affected period were not part of its recovered chain and advised users to check status before resending. These figures describe that incident only. - Never disclose a seed phrase or private key, including to someone claiming to be project or exchange support.
- Use only the project’s official support and claims instructions. Do not pay an unsolicited “recovery agent” or connect your wallet to an unverified site.
- Navigate to known official channels rather than following direct messages or links sent by strangers.
Elastos’s incident notice says it will never request a seed phrase, private key, or payment in response to that incident. Zano’s recovery guidance likewise tells users to preserve records and check transaction status before resending. These notices illustrate sound precautions; for any other incident, verify the project’s own support instructions. Elastos official site Zano’s official incident and release posts
Quick Recap
Why emergency upgrades call for different responses
| Incident pattern | What changed | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary restriction followed by a hard fork | Firo temporarily restricted multi-input Spark spends while preparing a permanent fix, then used a hard fork to restore full functionality. | Follow the project’s release and activation instructions; do not assume every Spark-related action is available during remediation. Firo’s release and upgrade information |
| Feature-specific disablement | Zcash temporarily disabled Orchard actions while Sapling and transparent transactions continued, then restored Orchard through a hard fork with a corrected circuit. | Identify the affected transaction type rather than assuming the entire network is unavailable. Zcash Community Forum |
| Bridge or service pause | Elastos reported its mainchain operating while ESC block production and bridge-mediated transfers were paused. | A functioning mainchain does not mean a bridge route is available; wait for the specified restoration notice before using that route. Elastos official site |
| Chain recovery with history affected | Zano restarted from block height 3,833,000, with approximately one month of chain history affected. | Reconcile transactions on the recovered chain before retrying them. Zano’s official incident and release posts |
| Exchange-level transfer pause | Binance paused BNB Smart Chain deposits and withdrawals around its 2026 upgrade while trading continued. | Check the custodian’s own service status; exchange availability can differ from network and trading status. Binance’s official announcements |
