One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf your water stops during a drought, check your water provider and local authority for outage and safety instructions, then ask where and when you can get an alternative supply. Keep drinking and washing your hands; do not assume drought restrictions mean tap water is unsafe. Boil water only when the relevant health or water authority tells you to, and follow any do-not-use notice exactly.
What to do first when the water stops
- Check official updates. Look at your water provider’s alerts and your local authority or public-health channels. Sign up for notifications if available. Report a complete loss of supply, reduced pressure, or a change in water colour or taste. A loss of pressure does not by itself establish that water is contaminated.
- Ask where to get water. Contact your provider or local authority to find out whether water is being delivered or made available at a collection point, how to access it, and when the next update is expected. Arrangements and customer entitlements depend on where you live.
- Keep up hydration and hand hygiene. Do not cut down on drinking water to conserve it. Follow local advice on continued tap-water use, and use hand sanitiser or wipes as appropriate if you cannot wash your hands.
- Arrange help for people who need it. Contact the provider about its Priority Services Register or equivalent support if anyone in your household needs help accessing water. Older people, babies and young children, people with chronic conditions, and people affected by heat may need particular attention. Check on neighbours who might be isolated.
- If you rely on a private supply, use your contingency plan. For a failing private well or other non-public supply, seek advice from your local authority and water company. Do not assume a public water company is required to deliver an alternative supply to a private-supply household; duties vary by location.
Does a drought-related outage mean tap water is unsafe?
No. Conservation measures such as hosepipe restrictions do not, by themselves, mean tap water is unsafe. In UK drought guidance, the advice is to continue using tap water unless told otherwise. Follow the specific notice for your area rather than inferring water quality from the drought or outage alone. See the UK government’s drought guidance.

What to do if there is a water-safety notice
Boil-water notice
A boil-water instruction addresses possible germs. Use bottled water or treat tap water as the notice directs for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, washing food, and preparing infant formula. The CDC’s general emergency guidance says to use bottled, boiled, or treated water to avoid getting sick. If water is cloudy, let it settle and filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel, or coffee filter. Bring clear water to a rolling boil for one minute, or three minutes above 6,500 feet; let it cool, then store it in a clean, sanitized, tightly covered container. Follow local instructions if they differ. Read the CDC’s water-safety guidance.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo-not-use notice or suspected chemical contamination
Do not try to make water safe by boiling or ordinary disinfection if authorities say not to use it, or if fuel or toxic chemicals are suspected. Use another safe source and contact the health department or local public-health authority if you are unsure. Boiling or disinfection does not remove heavy metals, salts, and most chemicals, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.

When no safety notice has been issued
Ask the water provider or health authority whether you should use tap water. Do not treat a pressure loss, drought restriction, or unusual appearance as a substitute for official advice. Report changes in colour, taste, or pressure promptly.
Which emergency water sources and treatments are appropriate?
| Option | When it may help | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Bottled water | When authorities advise using an alternative source, or when the supply is interrupted. | For infant formula, do not assume bottled water is sterile or suitable: UK guidance warns it may contain unsuitable sodium or sulphate levels. Follow official infant-feeding advice. |
| Boiling | When a boil-water notice or health authority directs it for possible microbial contamination. | It does not address most chemical contamination. Do not boil water under a do-not-use instruction. |
| Purification tablets | As a conditional backup when boiling is unavailable and local health guidance and the product label support their use. | They are not a universal treatment for chemical hazards. Follow the notice and label exactly. |
| Ordinary taste or chemical-quality filter | For the particular taste, odour, or quality issue it is designed to address. | Do not assume it replaces boiling or other measures required for microbial safety. |
| Food-safe storage container with a tight cover | To hold water that is already safe or has been treated properly. | Storage does not purify water. Use a clean container and keep it covered. |
Do not use water from radiators or home-heating boilers. CDC guidance distinguishes these from a household tap-water heater tank, which may be a possible emergency source in some circumstances; follow local advice and avoid any source known to be contaminated. See CDC emergency water guidance and its advice on emergency water sources.

What UK water-supply standards say
These figures apply to UK public-supply interruptions and should not be treated as universal requirements or household preparation targets. Ofwat says that for planned interruptions lasting longer than four hours, a company should normally give 48 hours’ notice. For a piped-supply failure, Ofwat says companies must provide at least 10 litres per person per day to affected consumers within the first 24 hours and maintain provision until service is restored. The Drinking Water Inspectorate describes 10 litres per person per day for the first 24 hours and 20 litres per person per day for a prolonged event as a guideline in its discussion of public-supply failures. Check the applicable rules and arrangements with your provider: Ofwat’s guaranteed standards of service and the Drinking Water Inspectorate’s public-supply failure guidance.

How to prepare for a future interruption
- Save your water provider’s outage contact details and enable alerts if offered.
- Ask the provider what support is available if anyone in your household cannot collect or manage water without assistance.
- Keep a clean, food-safe container with a tight cover for storing safe or properly treated water; it is a storage measure, not a purification device.
- If you depend on a private supply, make a contingency plan with advice from your local authority.
- Know where your provider will announce alternative supplies and how to receive updates during an outage.
