A rocky planet may be habitable if it can sustain liquid water, an energy source, and the nutrients life needs, with an atmosphere and climate that keep those conditions available. Being in the habitable zone helps, but does not prove a planet has water or life. Earth is the only confirmed inhabited planet; Mars shows how a rocky world with evidence of ancient water can become cold and dry at the surface.
What makes a planet habitable?
For life as we know it, habitability means that environmental conditions could support life—not that life has been found there. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center describes liquid water, energy, and nutrients as a baseline for considering life-supporting conditions. That baseline reflects life as known on Earth; it is not proof that every possible form of life must require exactly the same conditions.

Liquid water, energy, and nutrients
Liquid water is a central guide because all known Earth life depends on it. A planet also needs usable energy and the chemical nutrients organisms require. These ingredients must be available together, in places and for long enough to matter. A world’s rocky composition alone establishes none of that.
An atmosphere and climate that can sustain conditions
An atmosphere influences surface temperature and whether liquid water can persist. Its presence, composition, and history matter alongside a planet’s orbit: a suitably placed world without an appropriate atmosphere may not have a temperate surface or stable surface water. NASA’s Goddard explainer emphasizes that habitability depends on interactions among a planet, other bodies in its system, and its star.

Is being in the habitable zone enough?
No. The habitable zone is the range of distances from a star where surface liquid water could be possible under suitable planetary conditions. Its location depends on the star’s size and brightness. It is a useful first screen for selecting worlds to study, not a guarantee of an atmosphere, an ocean, a mild climate, or life.
The star matters beyond its brightness. NASA notes that many Earth-size planets have been detected around red dwarfs, whose habitable zones are close to the star. Planets in those close-in regions can face much stronger X-ray and ultraviolet radiation than Earth receives. Stellar activity can affect atmospheres and potential habitability, so an orbit that passes the first screen still needs closer examination.

Earth and Mars: two rocky planets, different histories
| Feature | Earth | Mars | What the comparison shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planet type | Terrestrial, or rocky, planet | Terrestrial, or rocky, planet | Rocky composition is a category, not a habitability verdict. |
| Water | Persistent liquid water at the surface | Ancient landforms and minerals record past water; today, water is largely frozen or otherwise unavailable at the surface. | Evidence of past water does not establish present surface habitability. |
| Present surface conditions | Supports a surface biosphere | NASA describes the surface as cold, arid, and inhospitable to terrestrial life. | Atmospheric retention and climate history affect how long water can persist. |
| Magnetic history | A magnetosphere shields the planet from charged particles and helps reduce solar-wind erosion. | NASA reports that Mars lost its global magnetic field before significant atmospheric erosion. | Magnetic environments are relevant to atmospheric history, but this comparison does not establish that every habitable planet needs an Earth-like global field. |
| Evidence of life | Life is confirmed. | Life is not confirmed by the cited NASA account. | Potential habitability and evidence that a world is inhabited are different claims. |
Could Mars have supported life?
Mars has evidence of ancient water, so scientists investigate whether some earlier environments could have supported life. That evidence is not itself evidence that life existed. The distinction is important: scientists can infer past environmental conditions from rocks and minerals without having detected organisms.

In an October 7, 2024 NASA account, researchers reported that carbon-rich minerals measured by the Curiosity rover in Gale crater indicate extreme evaporation and only transient liquid water in ancient Mars. The findings point to conditions that were not continuously wet. David Burtt, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center research scientist and lead author, said the isotope values indicate “extreme amounts of evaporation,” and that the carbonates likely formed in a climate that could support only transient liquid water.

The account describes two possible climate regimes for forming the carbonates: wet–dry cycling, or cold, salty water under conditions where ice formed. The samples are not consistent with an ancient surface biosphere at the time those carbonates formed. The findings do not rule out an underground biosphere or a surface biosphere that existed earlier.

For a distant rocky world, scientists can use its star and orbit to assess whether surface liquid water might be possible, then investigate whether the planet has an atmosphere and what conditions it might support. Each step narrows the possibilities; none by itself establishes that the planet is inhabited.

NASA presents TRAPPIST-1 as a system of seven Earth-size rocky worlds. That count describes the system, not seven worlds known to be habitable. NASA’s overview reports preliminary Webb evidence that TRAPPIST-1 d apparently lacks an atmosphere, while study of its sibling planets continues. Such observations are evolving and depend on interpretation; they are not a settled verdict about life on the system’s other planets.

This is a possibility, not a confirmed count of habitable or inhabited worlds. A large number of rocky planets does not tell us how many have the combination of water, energy, nutrients, and lasting environmental conditions that life as we know it requires.
