What to Do If Your Tech Job Is Affected by a Company Restructuring

If restructuring may change or eliminate your tech role, get the timeline and options in writing, check benefits and local rights, and start a focused transition plan.

If a company restructuring may change or eliminate your tech role, first get the proposal, decision dates, and your options in writing. Then check internal roles, preserve permitted personal employment records, and verify your pay, benefits, and local rights before making decisions. The right process depends on your country, employment status, contract, collective arrangements, and individual circumstances; this guide is practical information, not a determination of your legal rights.

What should I ask HR if my job is being restructured?

Start by clarifying whether the company is discussing a possible change, conducting a formal consultation, offering you a different role, or confirming that your employment will end. These are different stages, and the applicable process depends on local law and your employment arrangements.

Ask for written answers to the questions that apply to your situation:

  • What is proposed for my role, and when will the decision and any change take effect?
  • Is this a consultation or a final decision? What is the consultation process and how can I respond?
  • What selection criteria are being used, and how are they applied to my role?
  • Are there internal vacancies, a transfer, or redeployment options? What would change in compensation, location, title, duties, or reporting line?
  • If my employment ends, what are the notice arrangements, final-pay components, and calculations for any severance or redundancy payment?
  • How will unused leave, bonus, commission, equity, or other incentive pay be treated under my agreement and applicable rules?
  • When does each benefit end, and who can explain coverage continuation, retirement-plan choices, and enrollment deadlines?
  • Who is the right contact for employment questions, and where can I find the relevant written policies and documents?

Keep notes of conversations, including dates, participants, and follow-up commitments. If you have a union, worker representative, or another representative under your local arrangements, contact them early. A labor authority or qualified employment adviser can explain which rules apply where you work; do not assume a particular consultation right or outcome without checking your circumstances.

What records can I safely gather before access changes?

Save or request copies only of personal employment and benefit records you are permitted to retain. Company policies and local law govern what you may access or keep. Do not transfer source code, customer information, confidential documents, or other company materials to personal storage.

  • Your employment contract and amendments, if permitted.
  • Pay statements and records of bonus or commission payments.
  • Benefits plan information, including coverage and retirement-plan details.
  • Performance reviews and written feedback you are allowed to retain.
  • A personal list of accomplishments and responsibilities, described without confidential or proprietary information.

For future applications, turn technical work into evidence you can share lawfully: the problem you worked on, your role, the skills involved, and the outcome where you are allowed to disclose it. Avoid customer names, internal metrics, unreleased product details, code, or other non-public information.

Can my employer offer me another role instead of redundancy?

An internal role, transfer, or redeployment may be an option, but there is no universal rule that an employer must offer a particular position. Check local law, your contract, collective arrangements, and the terms of any proposed role. Ask for the offer and its conditions in writing, then compare:

  • Compensation and how bonuses, commissions, or other incentives would work.
  • Location, working arrangements, title, duties, and reporting line.
  • Whether the role fits your skills and the direction you want for your career.
  • Benefits, job security, and any effect on service or other employment terms.
  • How the offer affects the restructuring process if you decline or accept it.

Do not rely on a verbal description of a material change. If you are unsure how acceptance, refusal, or a document affects your rights, get advice based on the actual terms before responding.

What should I do if job loss is confirmed?

Ask for the end date and written explanation, and request an itemized account of what you will receive and when. The exact entitlements and required documents depend on your jurisdiction and employment arrangements.

  • Confirm notice arrangements, final pay, and any severance or redundancy calculation.
  • Ask how unused leave and bonus, commission, or other incentive pay will be treated.
  • Request copies of relevant pay, benefits, and employment documents that you may retain.
  • Read any release or waiver carefully. There is no universal signing deadline or advice rule established here; if the document’s terms or consequences are unclear, have it reviewed under local law before signing.

What happens to my benefits if I’m laid off?

Ask the plan administrator or benefits contact for the actual end dates and options for your plans. Health coverage, retirement choices, vesting, and any available continuation coverage depend on your plan, location, and personal circumstances.

For health coverage, compare the date current coverage ends, any continuation or alternate coverage available, its cost and coverage level, eligibility, and the enrollment deadline. For retirement accounts, check vesting and what choices apply to your account or options; do not assume that every plan works the same way.

Contact the relevant unemployment or public employment service promptly to ask about eligibility, application timing, and training support. In the United States, unemployment insurance is administered by each state under federal guidelines, and eligibility is determined under state law. State requirements and your circumstances matter, so contact the agency for the state handling your claim.

Where can I get transition support?

United States: ask about Rapid Response

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration says Rapid Response teams can provide information on unemployment insurance, health coverage, skills upgrading and training, career counseling, job-search assistance, resume preparation, and interview workshops. Services vary by state and layoff situation. The department advises workers to use available services while still employed or while unemployment benefits, severance, or other resources remain available. See For Workers — Rapid Response Services For Workers and contact your state or local workforce service to learn what is available.

For unemployment information, start with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Federal-State Unemployment Insurance Program; the state agency determines eligibility under state law.

Australia: check award or enterprise agreement consultation rules

Fair Work Ombudsman guidance describes redundancy as a situation where a business no longer needs an employee’s job done by anyone. Major workplace changes may trigger consultation requirements under the relevant award or enterprise agreement. Redundancy pay may be available based on continuous service, subject to applicable rules and exceptions. Check the current Fair Work Ombudsman redundancy guidance for your circumstances.

United Kingdom: use current GOV.UK guidance

Redundancy rights depend on the circumstances. If your employer is insolvent, GOV.UK describes possible claims for redundancy pay, holiday pay, outstanding wages, other payments, and statutory notice pay through the insolvency process, using a case reference where applicable. For your situation, use the current GOV.UK guidance for employees when an employer is insolvent and its guidance on redundancy rights.

France: check redeployment steps under French law

Service Public says that before economic dismissal, an employer must take measures to avoid dismissal, adapt employees to their jobs, and seek redeployment as described under French law. The details depend on circumstances including whether the employer belongs to a group. Read the current Service Public guidance on economic dismissal and seek advice for your case.

How do I turn the change into a practical career plan?

Start with roles that match your strongest technical skills and transferable experience, rather than applying broadly without a clear fit. Write down permitted examples of your work, then map each to the requirements in target job descriptions. For example, a project involving a platform migration may demonstrate system design, cross-team coordination, risk management, and delivery—not just familiarity with a particular tool.

  1. List your technical strengths, responsibilities, and accomplishments using only information you are allowed to disclose.
  2. Choose a small set of target roles and identify recurring skills or gaps in their requirements.
  3. Update your resume with specific, non-confidential evidence that matches those requirements.
  4. Set a realistic application and networking routine, and keep records of applications and follow-ups.
  5. If training could help, compare its relevance to target roles, cost, time, employer recognition, and any public funding or support available.

Public career services may offer counseling, resume help, interview support, job-search assistance, or training information. Paid coaching or courses are optional; weigh their added value against free public services and your budget.
