For spreadsheets and browsing, 60Hz is usually enough when content is still; 100Hz can make scrolling and pointer movement look smoother. It does not make calculations run faster or pages load sooner.
What does 100Hz mean?
Refresh rate is how many times a display redraws its image each second, measured in hertz (Hz). A 100Hz monitor can refresh 100 times per second; a 60Hz monitor refreshes 60 times per second. Microsoft’s Windows support guide uses 60Hz as an example of this definition.

Refresh rate is not the same as frame rate. The monitor sets how often it can update, while the computer and applications supply the images, or frames, to show. A monitor set to 100Hz cannot create useful new frames that the computer is not outputting. Samsung Business Insights likewise notes that the computer and monitor need to work together for a high refresh rate to pay off.

When the screen is still
For reading cells, typing, email, and ordinary web browsing, 60Hz is generally adequate. A higher refresh rate does not add resolution or detail to a static spreadsheet, provide new data, or speed up a calculation.

When something moves
The difference is most relevant when motion is visible. Scrolling through a long worksheet or web page, or moving the pointer across the screen, may look and feel more fluid at 100Hz than at 60Hz. Samsung describes 60Hz as suitable for browsing, email, and document editing, and includes web surfing and document reading among everyday 60Hz uses in its 2026 refresh-rate guide.
That is a smoothness difference, not a productivity guarantee. The sources cited here do not establish a quantified productivity gain from using 100Hz for spreadsheets or browsing.

What needs to support 100Hz?
The monitor must offer a 100Hz mode at the resolution you want to use, and the computer and its output need to support that combination. Check the monitor’s supported modes and your computer’s display output; refresh-rate options can vary with resolution and connection.
In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select the display you want to check. The page shows the current resolution and refresh rate and lets you choose from available rates. Microsoft cautions that some rates may not be available at the current resolution; selecting an incompatible mode can change the resolution.

How to choose between a 60Hz and 100Hz office monitor
| Consideration | What it means for office use |
|---|---|
| Motion | 100Hz can make scrolling and pointer movement look smoother; the difference matters less when you mostly view still content. |
| Compatibility | Confirm that the computer, connection, monitor, and chosen resolution support the desired refresh-rate mode. |
| Other monitor features | Compare size, resolution, panel, ergonomics, and ports as well as refresh rate. Refresh rate is only one part of the decision. |
| Cost and use | If your work is mostly static, consider whether smoother movement is worth any added cost. No price comparison is established here. |
For a concrete example, MSI lists its PRO MP252L as a 24.5-inch IPS monitor with 1920 × 1080 resolution, 100Hz refresh rate, and 1ms MPRT response time on its official specifications page. Those are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results or a recommendation.

Microsoft and Samsung discuss possible comfort benefits from higher refresh rates, but that does not guarantee that 100Hz will relieve eye strain or fatigue for a particular person. Treat comfort claims as possibilities, not a promised health outcome.
