If your RTX 5090’s power cable or 16-pin connector is unusually hot, smells burnt, looks discolored or deformed, or feels loose, stop the workload and shut the PC down. Disconnect power only if it is safe, then let the system cool before touching or removing the card. Do not keep gaming, repeatedly restart the PC, or force apart a melted or fused plug. Contact the graphics-card maker and power-supply maker for model-specific inspection and repair instructions.
What to do immediately
- Stop the workload and shut down. Do not continue gaming or run another load to see whether the connector heats up again.
- Disconnect power only if it is safe. If there is smoke, active burning, or another immediate hazard, keep clear and follow appropriate emergency precautions rather than handling the PC.
- Let the system cool before handling it. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 User Guide says to wait until the graphics card has cooled before removing it from the system. Do not touch or pull at a hot connector.
- Do not force a damaged plug apart. A melted or fused connection needs manufacturer or qualified repair guidance, not extra force.
- Contact both manufacturers. Give the GPU maker and PSU maker the exact model numbers and describe what you observed. Ask how they want the card, cable, and PSU inspected before powering the system again.
There is no universal temperature threshold in the cited guidance that lets an owner diagnose a connector by touch, and a photograph alone cannot establish the cause. A hot connection does not by itself prove whether the GPU, PSU, cable, fit, or another factor is responsible. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 User Guide and technical reporting on high-power connections support stopping use and checking for damage rather than guessing at a cause. Tom’s Hardware’s connector reporting

What to inspect once the system is cool and disconnected
Do not reinsert or power a connector that shows melting, deformation, discoloration, or other visible damage. If there are no visible signs of damage and the manufacturers advise an inspection, check for installation and fit issues without bending, forcing, or modifying the cable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Full insertion: NVIDIA’s exact instruction is: “Ensure the power plug is fully inserted and seated flush against the power receptacle.” A plug that is not fully seated is a concern to raise with support.
- Cable strain: Check whether the case side panel presses on the cable, whether it is sharply bent close to the plug, or whether it pulls sideways on the connection. Route it without strain, but understand that careful routing is not a guarantee against overheating.
- Both ends of a native cable: If the PSU uses a modular GPU cable, check the PSU-side connection only as directed by the PSU maker. Cable compatibility must be confirmed for the exact PSU model.
- Evidence for support: Record the card and PSU model, cable or adapter used, system configuration, and what you observed. Preserve purchase details and ask for written instructions before attempting a repair or buying a replacement cable.
Do not diagnose the source of damage from its location alone. A damaged GPU receptacle is not fixed by replacing only the cable.

Use the right power arrangement for your exact RTX 5090
NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 User Guide, Revision 1, lists a 1000 W minimum-rated PSU for the Founders Edition and two supported power configurations. Its installation directions below apply to the RTX 50 Series Founders Edition; board-partner cards can have different instructions, so check the exact card maker’s manual.
| Configuration | What NVIDIA specifies for the Founders Edition |
|---|---|
| Included NVIDIA adapter | At least four independent, dedicated PCIe 8-pin cables from the PSU. NVIDIA says: “Use only the included NVIDIA power connector adapter for your GeForce RTX 50 Series Founders Edition graphics card.” |
| Native 16-pin cable | One PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated for at least 600 W. |
The guide also advises connecting the adapter to the GPU before installing the card so you can check that the plug fits firmly and evenly. Follow the instructions for your precise GPU and PSU rather than assuming a cable or adapter that looks similar is suitable. NVIDIA RTX 5090 User Guide, Revision 1

- 【For RTX 3090Ti, RTX 40 and 50 Series】Fasgear PCIe 5.1 16(12+4)pin male to 4X8 pin female sleeved extension cable is made for GeForce RTX 5090 5080 5070 5070Ti 4090 4080 4070ti 3090Ti GPU. That means, this 12VHPWR PSU cable can extend length and work well with the original power cable to get stable and reliable performance. Note: This GPU sleeved extender cable is not fitted for 12pin GeForce RTX 3090 Series & 8pin RTX 4070 GPU. Only support 12+4pin GPU like RTX 3090Ti, RTX 40 and 50 Series
- 【Up to 600W Output】Fasgear 12V-2x6 PSU extension cable supports up to 600W output. The plug terminals of the graphics card cable are made of alloy copper and tinned material, which can bring stable and higher currents. NOTE: This extension cable requires four unoccupied 8-pin PCI-e ports on your power supply to properly function. Connecting fewer than four connectors to your power supply may cause system damage.
- 【Neat and Tidy】Fasgear 40cm 4x8 pin GPU riser extension cable, compared with the original 10cm power cable, can make your DIY computer system neat and tidy. With 4 transparent cable comb acrylic clips, it is convenient for you to manage this sleeved extension cable cord. Thus, this extension cable can make the appearance of the computer system more beautiful. Note: This cable is a 12V-2x6 sleeved extension cable. And it needs to be worked with the original power cable.
- 【16AWG Tinned Copper Wire】Fasgear 12V-2x6 PCI-e 5.1 extension cable contains 16AWG tinned copper wire. Compared with the standard 18AWG power cord, this updated 16AWG tinned copper wire can bring stable voltage transmission and higher power output. Meanwhile, this tinned copper can prevent oxidation. As for the 12+4pin connector, 2 of 4 pins are connected with power wires while another 2 pins are GND wires
Can you replace the cable with another 12V-2×6 cable?
Only use a replacement modular cable that the PSU manufacturer explicitly approves for your exact PSU model. A connector that physically fits is not proof that its wiring is compatible. The consulted sources do not validate any particular replacement listing, and a replacement cable will not repair damage to the GPU’s power socket.
MSI describes 12V-2×6 as an update to 12VHPWR, with revised contact and sense-pin structure intended to improve connection detection and reliability when correctly installed. That is not a guarantee that the connector cannot overheat. MSI also notes that a native connector can simplify installation, but requirements vary by graphics-card model. (Note: Not recommended for RTX4090 and 5090 to prevent insufficient power supply)
If the GPU or PSU maker says a component must be replaced, ask for the approved part number and whether they require the card, cable, or PSU to be inspected first. Do not buy or install an unverified cable while the cause and extent of damage are unknown.
Does the PSU need to be replaced?
Not automatically. A heat-damaged GPU-side socket cannot be made safe simply by installing a new PSU, and an overheating cable does not establish that the PSU itself is at fault. Have the GPU and PSU makers or a qualified technician determine which parts need inspection or replacement.
