If your personal data was exposed in a breach, first verify the notice through the organization’s official website or a phone number you already trust. Then respond to the specific information involved: secure exposed logins, contact your bank or card issuer about financial details, and consider credit protections if your Social Security number was exposed. A breach notice means your information may have been exposed; it does not prove that someone has used it.
What should I do first after a data breach?
- Read and verify the notice. Find out what information was involved, which accounts or services may be affected, and whether the organization offers a free service. Don’t follow an unexpected message link to sign in or provide more information. Go to a website you already know is official, or use a trusted contact method. The FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov/databreach provides breach-specific guidance.
- Secure affected accounts. Change exposed passwords and any other passwords you reused. Use a unique, strong password for each account, sign out other sessions, turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) where available, and check that recovery email addresses and phone numbers are still yours. Look for unfamiliar activity or email-forwarding rules. If you’re locked out, use the provider’s official account-recovery process.
- Contact the right financial institution. If a card number was exposed, ask the issuer whether to cancel and replace the card, and review transactions. If bank-account information was exposed or you see an unfamiliar withdrawal, contact the bank’s fraud team promptly and ask what protections or replacement options are appropriate.
- Consider credit protections if a Social Security number was exposed. Review your credit reports for unfamiliar accounts. You can place a free credit freeze with each of the three nationwide credit bureaus or consider a fraud alert.
- Act on evidence of misuse. Contact the company or institution involved, secure or close the affected account, and dispute unauthorized activity. Report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov for a tailored recovery plan and forms. Keep copies of breach notices, messages, records of calls, and case numbers.
Match your response to the information exposed
The breach notice should identify the data involved. Use the steps that fit; exposure of a login, card number, or government identifier does not call for exactly the same response.

| Information exposed | What to do |
|---|---|
| Username, password, or email or social account | Change the exposed password and any reused versions, sign out other sessions, enable 2FA, check recovery details and forwarding rules, and use the provider’s official recovery process if you’re locked out. |
| Credit or debit card number | Contact the card issuer, ask whether to cancel and replace the card, and review transactions. Update legitimate automatic payments if the card number changes. |
| Bank-account information | Contact the bank and ask whether it recommends closing or replacing the account. Review withdrawals and update legitimate automatic payments if your account details change. |
| Social Security number | Check credit reports for unfamiliar accounts, consider a freeze at all three nationwide bureaus or a fraud alert, and watch for signs of misuse. If you’re concerned about tax identity theft, review the IRS’s Identity Protection PIN guidance. |
| Driver’s-license information | Contact your state motor-vehicle agency for instructions. The agency may be able to flag the license number or advise whether to request a duplicate; procedures vary by state. |
| A child’s personal information | Ask the credit bureaus how to request a freeze for a minor. The FTC says a free freeze is available for a child under 16, using a process different from an adult’s. |
Should I freeze my credit after a data breach?
A credit freeze is worth considering when a Social Security number or other identifying information that could be used to apply for credit was exposed. A freeze restricts access to your credit report, making it harder for a new creditor to open an account in your name while the freeze is in effect. The FTC says a freeze is free, does not affect your credit score, and “lasts until you lift it.”
You must contact all three nationwide credit bureaus to place a freeze. When you apply for credit or another service that needs to review your credit file, you may need to lift the freeze temporarily. The FTC explains the process at Credit Bureau Contacts.

Freeze, initial fraud alert, or extended fraud alert?
| Protection | What it does | Cost and duration | What you need to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts access to your credit report so new creditors generally cannot open an account in your name while it is in effect. | Free; stays in place until you lift it. | Contact all three nationwide bureaus. Temporarily lift it when a legitimate credit check is needed. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity before granting new credit. It does not block access to your credit report. | Free; lasts one year and can be renewed. | Contact one bureau; it must notify the other two. You can also have a freeze. |
| Extended fraud alert | Asks businesses to take steps to verify your identity before granting new credit; intended for people who have experienced identity theft. | Free; lasts seven years. Renewal is subject to documentation. | You need an FTC identity-theft report or police report. See the FTC’s credit bureau guidance. |
A freeze imposes a stronger restriction on credit-file access, while an alert leaves the report accessible and asks businesses to verify identity. The FTC’s current overview is Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts.
Is credit monitoring worth it after a breach?
Monitoring can help you spot some warning signs, but it is not prevention and cannot catch every kind of misuse. A breached organization, bank, credit card provider, employer benefit, or insurer may offer free monitoring, so check those options before paying.

- Identity monitoring may check data sources beyond credit files, but many services do not alert on misuse involving tax returns, public benefits, or Social Security benefits.
- Identity-theft recovery services and insurance may provide assistance or cover some costs of reclaiming an identity. Insurance generally does not reimburse money stolen by scammers; check deductibles, exclusions, and overlap with homeowners’ or renters’ insurance.
Before paying, find out which bureaus and other data sources are monitored, how often they are checked, what alerts are included, and whether recovery support or insurance is part of the service. You can also check your credit files using AnnualCreditReport.com. Monitoring does not replace securing affected accounts or acting on signs of fraud. The FTC’s Credit Monitoring: What You Need to Know explains the limits.

Scammers may use real details from a breach to make an unexpected call, email, or text sound legitimate. Don’t give personal information to someone who contacts you unexpectedly, even if they know something about you. End the conversation and contact the organization using a phone number or website you already trust. If an account may have been accessed, check for unfamiliar login notices, changed contact details, and forwarding rules.
