If your name is missing from India’s electoral roll, first confirm the omission using an official search service. If it is genuinely absent, apply for inclusion using Form 6; an existing entry with an incorrect address or details usually calls for Form 8 instead. You must be listed on the roll to vote—a voter ID card by itself is not enough.
Search the roll before applying
Look up your details through the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) electoral search service. Check the spelling of your name and other identifying details, and try variations if they may have been entered differently.

- Call 1950, adding your area’s STD code.
- Send an SMS in the format ECI <EPIC number> to 1950.
- Use the Voter Helpline App.
ECI’s guidance is clear: “You can vote only if your name appears in the Voter List (also known as Electoral Roll).” An EPIC, or voter ID card, does not replace a roll entry. See ECI’s How to Vote page.

Choose the right form
| Situation | Route |
|---|---|
| Your name is absent and you are applying as a general voter | Form 6: claim for inclusion |
| You are an eligible overseas voter | Form 6A: overseas voter registration |
| You are already enrolled but need to shift your residence or correct particulars | Form 8: shifting, correction and related requests |
| You want to object to or request deletion of an entry | Form 7; this is not the form to claim your own missing entry |
These are the form purposes listed by ECI on its voter-services portal and registration guidance. Do not submit Form 6 just to correct an existing entry; use the route that matches your situation.
Check eligibility for Form 6
ECI’s general registration guidance says an applicant must meet all of these conditions:
- Be an Indian citizen.
- Be at least 18 on a qualifying date: 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October in the year of roll revision.
- Be ordinarily resident in the relevant polling area.
- Not be disqualified from registration.
For current form requirements and any state- or Union Territory-specific instructions, consult the ECI registration page and the relevant state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) notice. The ECI portal lists Form 6 and related services.
Submit Form 6 and provide the requested documents
You can submit a claim online through the ECI voter-services portal. ECI also describes filing in person with the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO), sending the application by post, or handing it to your local Booth Level Officer (BLO). Follow the current Form 6 instructions for supporting documents; do not assume that an EPIC alone proves eligibility or residence.
- Open the ECI voter-services portal and select the service for new voter registration (Form 6).
- Complete the form with your details and the polling area where you ordinarily reside.
- Attach the supporting documents requested in the current form instructions.
- Submit the claim and keep its reference or acknowledgement details so you can follow its status.
Track the claim and respond to verification
Use the portal’s application-tracking service to check progress. The ERO decides the claim and may arrange for a BLO to verify residence and application details. ECI’s FAQ also describes document review and the possibility of objections or a hearing. If you receive a request or notice, follow its directions and deadlines rather than assuming submission alone means you have been added.
ECI says the decision is communicated by post and SMS using the contact details given in Form 6; its FAQ describes an objection period in the process it outlines. Procedural timing can depend on current official instructions, so rely on notices from the ERO and check the roll again after a decision. ECI’s indexed FAQ and the voter-services portal provide further guidance.

The deadline is tied to the particular election, not a universal number of days before polling. ECI says names may be included up to the last date for filing nominations; after that, the roll is frozen until that election is completed. Check the official election schedule and current ECI or state CEO notice immediately if you need to vote in an upcoming election. A polling-station official cannot add a missing name on polling day under this guidance.
Appeal if the claim is rejected
ECI describes different first-appeal authorities depending on whether the claim is handled during revision or continuous updation. Its FAQ gives the following general routes:
| When the decision is made | First appeal described by ECI | Further appeal described by ECI |
|---|---|---|
| During revision | District Election Officer | State Chief Electoral Officer |
| During continuous updation | District magistrate, additional district magistrate, executive magistrate or district collector | State Chief Electoral Officer |
Check the rejection order and current local instructions for the authority and deadline that apply to your case; do not rely on a generic time limit. ECI’s FAQ describes the appeal process.
Confirm the result on the roll
After the ERO’s decision, search the electoral roll again using the official service. If the entry still does not appear, check with the ERO or local BLO and refer to your application acknowledgement or decision notice. For local revision schedules and state-specific steps, use your state or Union Territory’s CEO website alongside ECI’s voter-services portal.
