What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Separate the two symptoms first: a MacBook Pro that will not charge needs a power-path, cable, wattage and battery-settings check; a dark or missing external display needs a display-power, connection, capability and macOS-settings check. Identify your exact MacBook Pro model before buying anything, because charging connectors, adapter wattage, supported display count and video modes vary by generation and screen size. Work through the checks below in order. They resolve many cases without replacing a battery, port, monitor or dock.
Start with the exact MacBook Pro model
Look up the model in Apple menu › About This Mac (or System Settings › General › About) and note the chip, screen size and model year. MacBook Pro models introduced in 2016 or later can charge over USB-C; many newer models also include MagSafe 3. The correct adapter depends on the model, not simply on the fact that the connector fits.

| MacBook Pro family | Apple-listed adapter guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 14-inch models introduced in 2021 or later | 67W, 70W or 96W, depending on configuration | Use the wattage specified for your exact configuration. |
| 16-inch models introduced in 2021 or later | 140W | The model and cable must support the required high-power connection. |
| 16-inch models introduced in 2019 | 96W | Do not substitute the 2021-and-later 140W figure automatically. |
| Some 13-inch and 15-inch models introduced in 2016 or later | 61W or 87W | Check the exact model before selecting a replacement. |
These are Apple product specifications, not universal recommendations. A USB-C Mac can accept a USB Power Delivery adapter with a different wattage, but Apple recommends at least the minimum specified for the computer. A lower-power source may run macOS while failing to increase the battery percentage, particularly during demanding work.

- Charging On Hold: Optimized Battery Charging can pause at a high percentage and resume later.
- Charged to [percentage] Limit or Charging to [percentage] Limit: a selected charge limit has been reached. If you need a full battery, choose Charge to Full Now when that option appears.
- Slow Charger: the connected source is providing less power than the Mac would prefer. It can still charge slowly, or the battery can continue to fall while the Mac is under load.
A percentage that is stable because of one of these settings is different from a Mac that shows no power connection at all.
2. Prove that power is reaching the adapter
- Plug a lamp or another known-good device into the same wall outlet.
- Unplug the Mac adapter from the outlet and reconnect it firmly. If it has a detachable AC plug or extension cable, make sure that piece is fully seated.
- Try another outlet, preferably on a different circuit, if the adapter cuts out or appears intermittent.
Electrical noise from another device on the circuit can trigger an adapter’s voltage protection. If charging works on another circuit or through a suitable UPS, investigate the original circuit rather than replacing the Mac immediately. If the adapter repeatedly shuts down on known-good outlets, stop relying on it and arrange an evaluation.
3. Restart, then retry the connector
Restart macOS and test charging again. For Apple’s USB-C troubleshooting sequence, if the Mac still does not charge, shut it down, close the display for about 30 seconds, open it and reconnect power. Intel-based Macs may also require an SMC reset according to Apple’s instructions; Apple silicon Macs do not use the old manual SMC-reset procedure.

4. Test a cable that is explicitly made for charging
USB-C plugs are not proof that a cable can deliver charging power. Some USB-C cables carry data but are not intended to charge a MacBook Pro, while others support lower power than your model needs. Use a known-good charging cable and test each available charging port. Replace a cable that only works when bent, moved or held at an angle; that behavior indicates a failing cable or connector and is not safe to ignore.
Inspect the Mac port for lint or other debris. Do not force a tool into it. If you use MagSafe 3 and the indicator repeatedly flashes amber, disconnect the adapter, inspect the connector and Mac port, wipe both with a dry cloth, restart the Mac and reconnect. Never continue using visibly frayed, crushed, melted or otherwise damaged charging hardware.
5. Match adapter wattage and operating conditions
Compare the wattage printed on the adapter with the recommendation for your exact model. USB Power Delivery makes many alternate USB-C adapters technically usable, but “Mac compatible” is not enough: the adapter must support the necessary PD profile and provide at least Apple’s recommended minimum for normal charging performance.

Keep the adapter’s ventilation openings clear. A hot adapter can reduce or stop output until it cools. Let it return to room temperature, then retry it in an open, ventilated position. A Mac performing sustained compilation, video rendering or gaming can consume more power than a small adapter supplies; in that situation the computer may operate while the battery percentage remains flat or declines.
6. Update macOS and decide when to stop troubleshooting
Install available macOS updates through System Settings › General › Software Update. Software can affect charging behavior and battery management. If a known-good outlet, correctly rated adapter and charging cable still produce no charging, or if any port, cable or adapter is damaged, arrange service with Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Bring the Mac, adapter and charging cables so the complete power path can be tested. Do not conclude from the symptom alone that the battery or logic board has failed.
If your MacBook Pro does not recognize an external display
1. Confirm that the monitor itself is powered
- Turn the monitor on and verify that its power cable is firmly connected.
- Select the correct input on the monitor, such as HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C, using the monitor’s own controls.
- Disconnect the video cable from both ends, reconnect it securely and wait several seconds for macOS to detect the display.
Also raise brightness with the monitor’s physical controls. A display can be detected yet appear black because its brightness is set to minimum. Check macOS brightness controls as well.

2. Remove a hub or dock from the test
Connect the monitor directly to a compatible MacBook Pro port, bypassing the dock, hub or daisy chain. Direct connection is a diagnostic step, not a claim that every dock is defective. If the direct connection works, reconnect the dock alone, then add the monitor and other peripherals one at a time to identify the failing link, power supply or cable.
3. Verify every part of the video path
Check the Mac port, monitor input, cable and any adapter as one system. A USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter used for video must support the relevant standard, such as DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4. A cable can fit physically while lacking the bandwidth or video capability needed for the selected resolution and refresh rate. The result may be no image, a lower resolution or a lower refresh rate.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

| Mac port standard | USB-C, Thunderbolt and other ports do not all expose the same video functions. | Use the port capabilities listed for your exact Mac model. |
| Monitor input | The monitor must be set to the socket receiving the signal. | Select the matching HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C input. |
| Cable and adapter capability | Video support and bandwidth determine resolution and refresh rate. | Use hardware rated for the target mode; do not rely on fit or a “universal” label. |
| Dock or hub path | It adds another power, protocol and firmware variable. | Test directly first, then troubleshoot the dock separately. |
4. Check the Mac’s display limits
MacBook Pro models differ in the number of external displays they can drive and in the maximum resolution and refresh rate. Those limits also depend on the monitor, cable, adapter and other connected displays. Before buying a multi-monitor adapter, open the technical specifications for the exact Mac model and compare the supported display count and modes with your intended setup. A setup that exceeds the Mac’s limit will not become compatible because a dock has more sockets.

5. Refresh software and firmware
Install available macOS updates. Apple notes that software can affect display detection, image quality, resolution and refresh rate. If the monitor manufacturer provides firmware, apply it using that manufacturer’s documented procedure. After updating, shut down or restart the Mac and reconnect the display directly before restoring the hub or dock.
6. Check clamshell requirements
For use with the MacBook Pro lid closed, connect the Mac to power and use an external keyboard and mouse. Without that setup, a closed-lid configuration may not behave as expected even when the cable and monitor are working.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When one USB-C or Thunderbolt display is also the charger
A compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt monitor can carry video and provide power over one cable on supported MacBook Pro models. This combines both symptom paths: the monitor may show an image but provide too little power, or a cable may provide power but not the required video mode. Test with a correctly rated Mac adapter and a known-good full-featured cable. If the Mac charges normally from its own adapter but not through the display, investigate the monitor’s power output, cable capability and dock path rather than assuming the battery is defective.
What to replace—and what not to buy yet
| Part | Replace it when | Selection criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Charging adapter | The adapter is damaged, fails on known-good outlets or is below the model’s recommended wattage. | Exact Mac model, connector type, USB Power Delivery support where relevant and Apple’s recommended wattage. |
| Charging cable | A known-good cable restores charging, or the original is damaged or intermittent. | Charging support, correct connector and sufficient power rating. |
| Display cable or adapter | Direct connection works with a different, correctly rated cable or adapter. | Interface standard, supported resolution, refresh rate and exact Mac/monitor compatibility. |
| Hub or dock | The display works directly but fails only through that hub or dock. | Video protocol, bandwidth, power delivery, firmware and the number of displays it supports. |
A generic dock is not a default fix for a missing display, and a high-wattage adapter is not automatically correct for every MacBook Pro. Establish the failing link first.
When professional service is the right next step
- The Mac will not charge after testing a known-good outlet, correctly rated adapter and charging cable.
- A MagSafe indicator continues flashing after cleaning, restarting and reconnecting.
- A port, cable or adapter is physically damaged, unusually hot, sparking or emitting an odor.
- A monitor works with another computer and with a direct, known-good cable, but the Mac still provides no signal after software updates and capability checks.
For persistent charging failures, Apple recommends evaluation at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Bring the Mac and all charging equipment. Do not keep wiggling a failing connector or continue using damaged hardware while waiting for service.
