If your MacBook Air battery is draining quickly, first check System Settings > Battery to see when power use increased, then try reversible energy-saving changes and check Battery Health. A fast drain alone does not prove the battery needs replacement.
Check when the battery started draining faster
Open System Settings > Battery and review the battery usage history for the past 24 hours and the last 10 days. Compare the change with your screen-on time and recent usage. The history can help you spot a change in pattern, but Apple does not identify one universal cause from this display. See Apple’s MacBook Air battery guide.

Try simple steps to reduce energy use
These changes can conserve power, but Apple does not promise a specific runtime increase from any one of them.

- Lower display brightness. Use the brightness controls or the display setting available on your Mac.
- Turn on Low Power Mode, if available. On macOS Ventura or later, find power mode choices in Battery settings. Apple’s current power-mode documentation describes a specified reduced-power configuration for MacBook Air models introduced in 2024 or later; availability and options depend on the model and macOS version. - Close apps you are not using. This is a practical conservation step, not a diagnosis of which app is responsible.
- Disconnect unused peripherals. Remove accessories that do not need to stay connected while you are away from power.
Check Battery Health before considering service
Go to System Settings > Battery > Battery Health. A status of Normal indicates normal operation. Service Recommended means the battery holds less charge than when it was new or may not be functioning normally. Apple’s explanation is in Check the condition of your Mac laptop’s battery.
On older macOS versions without a Battery Health view, Option-click the battery status menu. Depending on the system, it may show a status such as “Replace Soon,” “Replace Now,” or “Service Battery.” Apple advises against relying on third-party battery condition apps for this check; use the status macOS provides.

Understand what battery capacity and charging behavior mean
Maximum capacity compares the battery’s current capacity with its capacity when new. As a battery chemically ages, it can hold less charge and provide fewer hours between charges. Apple says an Apple silicon Mac laptop battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions. That is a design expectation, not a rule that every battery below 80% must be replaced. See Apple’s battery health management guidance.
Battery health management monitors temperature history and charging patterns and may temporarily reduce the maximum charge to slow chemical aging. Maximum capacity may also recalibrate after a software update. A charge ceiling or capacity reading can therefore reflect battery management rather than a sudden fault.

Optimized Battery Charging is different from Low Power Mode. It is intended to reduce long-term wear: if your Mac predicts it will remain plugged in, charging may be delayed past 80%. It is not a remedy for rapid discharge while the Mac is unplugged. Apple describes this behavior in its battery guide.

If Battery Health says Service Recommended and reduced capacity is affecting everyday use, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple says you can continue using the Mac while waiting for the battery to be checked. Built-in batteries should be serviced through an Apple Store, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or an eligible Independent Repair Provider using genuine Apple parts. Provider availability, coverage, and cost depend on your location and situation; check with Apple or the provider directly. See Apple’s service guidance.

Apple says its one-year warranty includes coverage for a defective battery and that out-of-warranty battery service is available for a charge. Check the terms that apply in your region rather than assuming a repair is covered.
If Battery Health says Normal but drain continues
A Normal status does not identify why runtime is disappointing. Recheck Battery usage history for changes in when the Mac is active, confirm it is not being kept awake by a setting you intentionally enabled, and contact Apple Support or a qualified service provider if unusually fast drain persists. Do not replace the battery solely because of the symptom.
