An Xbox purchase prompt does not necessarily mean the free-to-play game itself costs money. It may refer to an add-on or another edition, or Xbox may not recognize the account’s right to play the title. Check the exact game and edition, the signed-in account, and the prompt’s wording before buying anything or subscribing.
Why Xbox may ask you to buy a free-to-play game
“Free-to-play” describes a game listing, not every item or edition associated with it. A prompt can concern in-game currency, an add-on, a special edition, a particular mode, or access to the base game. The wording and where it appears—on the store page, during installation, at launch, or inside a mode—help distinguish them.

Xbox access also depends on the relevant play right being recognized for the account in use. Microsoft’s game licensing documentation explains that a user without the rights to a game may be offered the option to purchase it; it gives error code 0x803f8001 as an example. That licensing explanation describes how access checks work, but it does not diagnose a particular console prompt.
A listing can also be unavailable or incompatible with a particular device. A game being available on one Xbox generation or platform does not prove that the same listing is offered for the console you are using.

How to diagnose and fix the prompt

Note the exact prompt and where it appears
Write down the full message and any error code. Note whether it appears while browsing the store, installing, launching, or entering a game mode. A request to buy currency or an add-on is not the same as a message blocking access to the base game.

Check the exact game and edition
Find the title on Xbox’s Free-to-Play Games page and compare its name and edition with the one selected on your console. Do not assume a similarly named edition or a search result is the free base game; the catalog can also include related benefits.

Confirm the account and its purchase or claim history
Make sure the Xbox profile currently signed in is the one that claimed or purchased the game. If you are unsure, review that account’s history using Microsoft’s instructions to find Microsoft Store purchases and downloads. Microsoft’s licensing guidance distinguishes a game’s listing from a user’s play rights, so seeing a free listing alone does not establish that the current profile has the entitlement.

Check availability and compatibility for your console
Verify that the specific game and edition are offered for your console generation and region. Microsoft notes that an app or game may be unavailable or incompatible with a device in its guidance on finding or installing an app from Microsoft Store. A listing for another device or platform is not proof that you can install or play it on this console.

Verify whether the prompt is actually about a subscription
Do not assume every purchase prompt is a Game Pass upsell, or that subscribing will resolve an entitlement problem. Subscription and online-access rules can depend on the game, mode, region, and current plan terms; check the specific game’s current official access terms and read the on-screen wording carefully. The Xbox free-to-play catalog by itself does not establish a subscription requirement for every title or mode.

Contact Xbox Support if the checks do not explain it
If the correct free-to-play edition is listed and the expected account is signed in, give Xbox Support the game and edition, console model or generation, exact prompt, any error code, and what you know about the account’s claim or purchase history. Those details help distinguish an account entitlement issue from a listing or device-availability issue. There is no confirmed universal console reset sequence for this unspecified symptom.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Microsoft’s documentation supports checking account play rights, sign-in, purchase history, and device compatibility. It cannot identify the cause of an individual prompt without the game title, edition, account context, console, and exact message. Microsoft’s product-sharing documentation is aimed at developers and explains licensing concepts; it is not a consumer diagnosis for a particular console.
