First identify what is failing: the greeting preview on your iPhone, or the greeting an outside caller hears. Those are different checks. Find the greeting controls for your Phone app layout, record and save the custom greeting again if available, then call your number from another phone. If Custom/Record is missing or callers still hear the wrong message, check Live Voicemail and contact your wireless carrier; voicemail features and custom greeting support vary by carrier and region.
Work out which greeting problem you have
“My greeting won’t play” can describe two different symptoms. You might be unable to hear a saved greeting while previewing it on the iPhone, or callers might hear silence, an old message, or the carrier’s default greeting. Start by deciding which one is happening and whether the greeting is set to Custom or Default.

- The preview is silent or inaudible: You do not yet know what an outside caller hears. Test the mailbox from another phone before concluding that the greeting itself is not being served.
- Callers hear a different greeting: The key test is what happens when another phone calls your number. A saved greeting or a successful preview on the iPhone does not by itself establish what the carrier voicemail mailbox plays to callers.
- You are not sure what callers hear: Make a test call from another phone and listen through the point at which the greeting plays. Note whether it is your custom message, the default message, or no audible greeting.
This distinction matters because an iPhone’s on-device voicemail features and carrier voicemail are not the same path. Apple’s Set up Voicemail on iPhone guide describes Live Voicemail separately from carrier voicemail. It also says voicemail features are available only with select carriers and in select countries or regions. The cause cannot be identified from the phrase “won’t play” alone.

The path depends on whether your Phone app uses the Unified or Classic layout. Apple’s guide, Change your voicemail greeting and settings on iPhone, documents both paths:
#1 Best Overall
- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
- Unified layout: Open Phone, tap Calls, tap Edit, then tap Edit Voicemail Greeting.
- Classic layout: Open Phone, tap Voicemail, then tap Greeting.
If one path does not match what you see, use the other layout’s labels as a guide to locate the greeting controls on your device; do not assume the controls are absent just because the tab names differ. Apple notes that recording a custom greeting with Custom and Record is not supported by every carrier or in every country or region. If those controls are missing, that may be a support limitation rather than a fault with the iPhone.
Record and save a fresh custom greeting
- Open the greeting controls using the path for your Phone app layout above.
- Choose Custom, then tap Record if that option is available.
- Record a short test greeting. Speak the message clearly and leave a brief pause at the beginning and end. This is a practical test recording, not a special iPhone requirement.
- Stop and save the recording using the controls shown on your iPhone. Confirm that the selection remains set to the custom greeting rather than Default.
- Call your number from another phone. Listen to the greeting as a caller would. This checks the result outside the iPhone’s own preview screen.
Use a deliberately simple message for the test, such as your name and a request to leave a message. A short recording makes it easier to tell whether the mailbox is still serving an older greeting. Do not judge the result only by the on-screen preview. The outside call is the useful confirmation that the carrier-facing mailbox is delivering the message you selected.
If the preview is audible but the test caller hears the default greeting, the preview alone has not solved the caller-facing problem. If the test call plays the custom message, callers can hear that greeting through the path tested, even if you still cannot hear the on-device preview. Keep those two results separate when describing the problem to your carrier or Apple Support.
If the iPhone preview has no sound
Apple’s instructions explain how to change the greeting, but do not establish a definitive cause for every inaudible preview. An inaudible preview does not, on its own, prove that the recording failed to save, that callers hear silence, or that the iPhone microphone is faulty.
- Check the selection and recording. Return to the greeting controls and confirm whether the greeting is set to Custom or Default. If Custom is available, record and save it again.
- Use an outside call as the deciding test. From a different phone, call your number and listen to the greeting. This establishes what an outside caller hears more directly than replaying the recording on the iPhone.
- Follow the branch that matches the test call. If callers hear the custom greeting, the caller-facing greeting is working in that test; if they hear the wrong greeting or no greeting, continue with the carrier and Live Voicemail checks below.
When you repeat the recording, make sure you actually finish the save action and leave the setting on Custom. Merely tapping Record and leaving the screen does not tell you which greeting the mailbox will use. If the controls return to Default, or the custom option disappears, note that exact behavior for the carrier.

Do not infer a particular iOS update, hardware failure, speaker problem, or microphone problem solely from a silent preview. The documented guidance does not identify those as universal causes of this symptom. If an outside caller hears your custom message normally, the missing preview and the caller-facing greeting are separate issues.
If callers still hear the default or wrong greeting
First verify that the iPhone is set to Custom and that the saved recording is the one you intended. Then check whether Live Voicemail is on. An Apple Support Community Specialist, Jaym_8, recommended checking Live Voicemail in a similar case where a custom greeting continued to play as the default, and advised contacting the wireless carrier if the problem remained. That response was posted October 25, 2023. It is targeted troubleshooting advice, not proof that Live Voicemail is always responsible or that it overrides every carrier greeting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Check Live Voicemail in the iPhone’s voicemail settings. If you change its setting, make another test call and note whether the caller-facing result changes. Treat this as a diagnostic check, not a guaranteed fix.
- Contact your wireless carrier if the test call still plays the default greeting, the custom recording option is unavailable, or you cannot access the voicemail mailbox. Ask the carrier to confirm that custom greetings are supported for your service and region and to troubleshoot the voicemail mailbox.
- Describe the evidence clearly. Tell the carrier whether the iPhone offered Custom/Record, whether the custom message was saved, whether its preview played, and exactly what a test caller heard. This helps distinguish a preview issue from a greeting being served by the mailbox.
Carrier support is a meaningful next step because voicemail availability and features depend on carrier and region, and the carrier voicemail service may be involved in what callers hear. The available guidance does not establish one setting or action that fixes every case.
Carrier voicemail versus Live Voicemail
These names can sound interchangeable, but they describe different parts of the call flow. Live Voicemail is an iPhone feature that can display a transcription while a caller leaves a message. Carrier voicemail is the mailbox supplied by your mobile provider. Apple’s setup guide treats them separately and notes that the iPhone forwards calls to carrier voicemail when the iPhone is turned off or outside network coverage. Consequently, a test made while the phone is reachable may not behave exactly like a call made while it is unavailable.
Do not assume that turning Live Voicemail on or off universally replaces the carrier greeting. Instead, record the setting you found, make a fresh test call, and tell the carrier whether the result changed. If callers consistently reach a carrier default despite a saved Custom greeting, the provider can verify provisioning and mailbox settings that are not exposed in the Phone app.

If Visual Voicemail is unavailable or you cannot open the mailbox
Apple’s Check your voicemail on iPhone guide provides an alternate way to access voicemail when Visual Voicemail is unavailable: call your mobile number from another phone, use the carrier’s method to bypass the greeting, and enter your voicemail password. The bypass key is carrier-specific; Apple describes it as * or # according to the carrier, so there is no universal key to try. If you do not know the correct key or password, contact your carrier for the instructions for your service.
Apple also says to tap Voicemail and follow the on-screen instructions when setting up or accessing voicemail. Available options can differ by carrier and region. If the mailbox cannot be reached through either route, ask the carrier to confirm that voicemail is provisioned and explain how to access it from another phone. A carrier representative may also need to reset or re-provision the mailbox before a custom greeting can be stored.
A practical test-call checklist
Use the same short checklist each time so you can report a clear result:
- Call from a different phone, preferably on a different network.
- Wait for the call to reach voicemail rather than hanging up during ringing.
- Write down the first words you hear: your custom message, a previous message, the carrier default, or silence.
- If prompted, leave a brief test message and then check whether it appears in Visual Voicemail or the carrier mailbox.
- Repeat after any change to Custom, Live Voicemail, or carrier settings.
This process avoids a common pitfall: changing several settings and then not knowing which change affected the result. It also gives the carrier specific observations instead of the broad report that “voicemail is broken.”
What each test result tells you
| What you observe | What it establishes | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The on-device preview is silent, but a test caller hears the custom greeting. | The caller-facing greeting played in that test; the preview symptom is separate. | Keep the two symptoms distinct. If the inaudible preview still matters, explain it to Apple Support without assuming a cause. |
| The preview plays, but a test caller hears the default greeting. | A preview does not establish that the carrier mailbox is serving that recording to callers. | Check Live Voicemail, then ask the carrier to confirm custom greeting support and troubleshoot the mailbox. |
| Custom or Record is not available. | The iPhone does not offer the recording control in the current setup; Apple notes that custom recording is not supported by every carrier or region. | Ask the carrier whether custom greetings are supported for your service and location. |
| You cannot access Visual Voicemail. | The on-device mailbox view is unavailable or not working for you; an alternate access method may depend on the carrier. | Use the carrier’s instructions to call from another phone, bypass the greeting, and enter the voicemail password, or contact the carrier. |
| The custom greeting works only when the phone is reachable. | You have not yet established how calls are handled when the iPhone is off or out of coverage. | Ask the carrier how calls are forwarded to its voicemail mailbox and test again under the carrier’s instructions. |
Questions people commonly ask
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I hear my iPhone voicemail greeting when I preview it?
A silent preview does not prove that callers hear silence. Re-record and save a Custom greeting if the option is available, then call your number from another phone. The outside call is the best way to determine what the mailbox is actually playing.

Why do callers still hear the default greeting?
Confirm that the greeting is set to Custom, check Live Voicemail, and make another test call. If callers still hear the default, ask your wireless carrier to confirm custom-greeting support and troubleshoot the voicemail mailbox. Carrier and regional support limits can remove the Custom/Record option.
How do I change my iPhone voicemail greeting?
In the Unified Phone layout, go to Phone > Calls > Edit > Edit Voicemail Greeting. In the Classic layout, go to Phone > Voicemail > Greeting. Choose Custom, tap Record when available, save the message, and test it from another phone.
Is Live Voicemail the same as carrier voicemail?
No. Apple documents Live Voicemail separately from the carrier-provided voicemail mailbox. They can be involved in different parts of a call, so do not assume that one setting is always the cause of a greeting problem.
What if I do not see Custom or Record?
Apple says custom recording is not supported by every carrier or in every country or region. Ask your wireless carrier whether your service supports custom greetings and whether voicemail is correctly provisioned.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow can I check voicemail without Visual Voicemail?
Call your mobile number from another phone, use the carrier-specific key to bypass the greeting—Apple says it may be * or #—and enter your voicemail password. There is no universal bypass key, so contact the carrier if you do not know the procedure.
The Bottom Line
Separate the silent iPhone preview from the greeting an outside caller hears. Use the correct Phone layout, choose Custom and save a fresh recording when supported, then test by calling from another phone. If Custom/Record is unavailable or the test call still reaches the wrong greeting, check Live Voicemail and have your wireless carrier verify support and troubleshoot the voicemail mailbox.
