If Apple has issued an order number for your iPhone and then reports that payment was declined, contact your card provider and tell it you placed an order with Apple. Then check the order in Apple Store Order Status and follow the payment option shown there. Apple Canada says an update can take up to 24 hours to appear; its instructions are regional, so customers elsewhere should use Apple’s help page for their country or region.
First, check whether this is an Apple Store order
This guidance is for an iPhone purchased as physical hardware through the Apple Store. Find the order confirmation and order number before taking action. If the declined-payment message concerns an App Store or iTunes digital purchase instead, use Apple’s digital-purchase billing instructions; that is a different payment flow.

For an existing Apple Store order number
- Contact your card provider. Ask it to review or authorize the Apple order. Apple Canada’s Shopping Help says: “Contact your card provider to advise them that you have placed an order with Apple so that the payment can be processed.” The issuer is best placed to explain or address a card-specific decline; the notice alone does not establish its cause.
- Open Apple Store Order Status. Sign in using the Apple Account used for the order, or use the lookup options available for your region. Apple’s U.S. Viewing & Changing Orders page says customers without an Apple Account can look up an order using its number and the postcode or email address associated with it.
- Use the payment action shown for that order. Apple Canada directs customers with an order number to verify payment or make an available payment-information change in Order Status. Its page says the status may take up to 24 hours to update after a change. If the order still shows a problem after that, use the local Apple Store support page for further help.
Do not place a second order just because the first payment was declined. The cited Apple guidance directs customers who already have an order number to check that order in Order Status; it does not say a duplicate order is required.
If you ordered as a guest
Apple Canada says customers who placed an order without an Apple Account must contact Apple Store Customer Service to change payment information. Use Apple’s support page for the country or region governing the order to find the applicable contact route and current details.

What a decline notice does—and does not—tell you
Apple Canada describes authorizing an order before shipment and charging the card after shipment. It says customers are notified if the card is declined so they can provide another payment method. This is Canada-specific guidance, not a universal statement about Apple payment timing.
A decline notice by itself does not prove that a final charge posted, and it does not identify why the payment failed. Check both Order Status and your card account. If the order status and card statement conflict, contact Apple or the card provider rather than assuming the payment was completed or cancelled.

Which route applies?
| Situation | Where to go | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Store hardware order with an order number | Card provider, then Apple Store Order Status | Ask the provider to review the Apple order and follow the payment option shown for the order. Apple Canada says an update may take up to 24 hours. |
| Apple Store hardware order placed as a guest | Apple Store Customer Service for your region | Apple Canada says guest customers must contact customer service to change payment information. |
| App Store or iTunes digital purchase | Apple Account payment settings | Apple’s Ireland support article directs users to Settings > Apple Account > Payment & Shipping and recommends contacting the financial institution if needed. This route is for digital purchases, not the cited hardware preorder flow. |
Apple’s detailed declined-card steps and the 24-hour update timing cited here come from Apple Canada’s Shopping Help. Payment rules, available actions, timing and support contacts can differ by country or region, so use the relevant local Apple Store help page if your order is outside Canada.
