How much iPhone storage do I need?
Start with your current use, then allow room for the content you expect to add. Apple’s iPhone Storage screen shows available space and which apps use the most storage; Apple also notes that a device can fill depending on its capacity and the amount of content stored on it. - Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Review available space, app-by-app usage, and any recommendations shown.
- Identify what you expect to add: photos, video, downloaded media, games, or other large apps.
- Decide how much of that content you want kept locally between transfers or downloads.
- Compare your expected use with the capacities offered for the specific iPhone model and market you are considering.
There is no Apple-published universal capacity threshold or reliable fixed count of photos or minutes of video per gigabyte that fits everyone. Video format, capture habits, apps, downloads, and whether originals stay on the phone all affect the decision.

How much storage do I need for photos, apps, and videos?
Photos and local originals
If you want full-resolution photo and video originals available directly on the iPhone, include the library’s expected growth in your capacity choice. If you use iCloud Photos, turning on Optimize iPhone Storage can reduce local space used by the library: Apple says the device keeps space-saving versions while iCloud Photos stores the originals in their original, high-resolution form. Originals can be downloaded when needed. Apple’s iCloud Photos setup guide describes this behavior.

Apps and downloads
Use the iPhone Storage screen to find the apps that currently take the most space, then consider whether you expect to add more apps or keep substantial downloaded media offline. Streaming and regular access to cloud content may reduce what you need stored locally; offline access and keeping files on the device point toward choosing more capacity than current use alone requires.
Video habits
Frequent recording, long clips, or higher-resolution formats make future storage needs harder to infer from current use. Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision recording among the iPhone 17 video capabilities, but its specifications do not establish a universal storage-per-minute figure. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications are model-specific; check the specifications for the iPhone you plan to buy rather than assuming every model records the same way.

Is iCloud storage the same as iPhone storage?
No. iPhone storage is the device’s physical capacity; iCloud storage is a separate cloud allowance. A cloud plan does not increase the phone’s internal capacity. iCloud Photos optimization can leave smaller versions on the phone while originals reside in iCloud, but it requires adequate iCloud space and may mean downloading an original when you need it.

How do current iPhone storage options affect the choice?
Available capacities vary by model and market. For example, Apple’s US iPhone 17 listing shows 256GB and 512GB options; those are choices for that model and listing, not a timeless capacity menu or a recommendation that one tier suits every buyer. Compare the available tiers against your own storage screen and habits. A person who streams, keeps a modest library, and can access cloud content may find the lower offered tier worth comparing closely. Someone who records frequently, keeps substantial offline files, or wants local originals should weigh the next available tier against that growth. The amount of extra room to allow is a personal planning choice, not an Apple-published rule.

Can an external drive replace more iPhone storage?
Not for ordinary iPhone storage. Apple documents external USB-C recording as a specialized ProRes workflow on specified Pro models and recording modes. Supported drive speed and power requirements matter, so an external drive should not be treated as a general-purpose way to expand the phone’s app, photo, or file capacity.
