Start by checking whether your iPhone supports the iOS version you’re trying to install. If it does, the next steps depend on the problem: free space for a storage warning, give a slow download time on Wi-Fi, retry a failed server check on another network, or use a computer if the wireless update keeps failing.
First, check whether your iPhone supports the update
If the update does not appear, or installation says the version is unavailable, confirm your iPhone model is compatible with that iOS release. Check Apple’s iOS compatibility information for the release you want. If your model is not listed, it cannot install that version; repeated attempts or downloads will not change the compatibility limit. Your phone can still install the newest iOS version that Apple supports for its model.

- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Review the storage recommendations and consider enabling Offload Unused Apps, which removes apps you rarely use while retaining their documents and data.
- If you still need room, remove apps or content you can replace or restore, such as downloaded media.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and try again.
Apple notes that an update may temporarily remove apps to make room and reinstall them after installation. There is no single free-space requirement that applies to every update; the amount needed can depend on the update and what is on the iPhone. See Apple’s instructions for updating iOS.

If the update is downloading slowly or cannot connect
The download is slow
Connect to Wi-Fi, avoid downloading other content while the update is in progress, and allow time for it to finish. Apple says download time depends on the update’s size and your internet speed, so a slow download does not by itself mean installation has failed.
The phone cannot check for or verify the update
- Try again using the same Wi-Fi network.
- If the error returns, try another network.
- If you use a VPN or proxy, disconnect it temporarily and retry; these connections can prevent the iPhone from reaching Apple’s update servers.
Apple’s update-server connection guidance covers connection problems. Once the update downloads, keep the iPhone powered during wireless installation.

If a downloaded update will not install
Remove the downloaded update file and download a fresh copy:

- Find the iOS update in the list, tap it, then tap Delete Update.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
If the update is not listed in iPhone Storage, or it fails again after redownloading, try updating with a computer.

If wireless updating still fails, update with a computer
Back up your iPhone before you update. Connect it to a computer with a compatible data cable, checking that the cable fits both the iPhone and computer ports. Use Finder on a recent Mac, or the appropriate Apple update app for an older macOS version or Windows. Follow Apple’s current instructions for updating an iPhone with a computer. A computer-based update is the next troubleshooting route when the wireless download or installation continues to fail.

A progress bar can move slowly during an update. Give it time if the bar is advancing. If the Apple logo remains for several minutes with no progress bar, or a computer does not recognize the iPhone, use Apple’s recovery-mode instructions for your specific model. Follow those steps rather than trying a button sequence from another model: recovery may lead to restoring the device, which can erase its contents.

Choose the next step by the symptom
