Then install iOS 27.0.1 and check for a carrier settings update. These updates are intended to prevent the reported issue; they may not restore a phone that has already lost service. If basic reconnection steps do not help, contact Apple or AT&T for diagnosis and replacement guidance.
What SOS or No Service means—and when to call 911
SOS or No Service means your iPhone is not connected to its normal cellular network. AT&T says the reported iPhone 18 Pro Max issue may affect calls, texts, data, and even 911 calls, so do not assume emergency calling will work normally.

If you need emergency help, try calling 911. If the call does not connect and your iPhone displays a satellite emergency text option or green satellite icon, tap it and follow the on-screen instructions. AT&T provides iPhone 18 Pro Max satellite support guidance.
Install the recommended iPhone and carrier updates
As of October 4, 2026, AT&T’s device-specific notice recommends that iPhone 18 Pro Max owners install iOS 27.0.1 and check for a carrier settings update. Apple says the updates together are intended to help prevent the issue, not to guarantee recovery on a phone that has already lost service.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Update iOS: Connect to Wi-Fi, open Settings > General > Software Update, and install iOS 27.0.1 if it is offered. AT&T’s wireless call troubleshooting notice gives this version recommendation.
- Check carrier settings: While connected to Wi-Fi, open Settings > General > About. If a carrier settings update appears, accept it. Apple explains that carrier settings updates can be offered through this screen in its SOS, No Service, or Searching troubleshooting guidance.
Try these basic steps to reconnect
If the phone has not already suffered the reported persistent loss of service, try Apple’s standard checks in order:
- Turn on Airplane Mode, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Open Settings > Cellular and confirm the AT&T line you use is turned on.
These steps may resolve an ordinary temporary connection problem, but they should not be treated as a fix for a device already affected by the reported issue.

If service is still gone, contact AT&T and Apple
Ask AT&T to check whether your account is in good standing, your location has coverage or an outage, the device has a block, and your plan is set up correctly. Apple notes that only the carrier can access and manage account details.
If the line and local network check out but the iPhone still has no service after updating, contact Apple Support or AT&T, including a store, for device-specific diagnosis and instructions. 9to5Mac reports that Apple said devices that have already lost service require a hardware replacement; the updates are intended to prevent further cases, not restore those devices. Confirm current eligibility and replacement terms directly with Apple or AT&T. The detailed technical cause and replacement eligibility rules were not stated in the cited reports.

How widespread is the AT&T issue?
Apple described the issue as affecting a “small number” of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T, according to 9to5Mac’s October 2, 2026 report. No numeric count or percentage was provided, so the phrase does not establish how likely any individual phone is to be affected. AT&T’s statement, reported by MacRumors on October 2, 2026, also urged affected-model owners to update their phones.
