A dark-web alert means your information may have appeared in exposed data; it does not prove someone has signed in to your account. If only your email address was exposed, check and secure accounts that use it to log in. If a password was exposed, change it promptly everywhere you reused it, starting with your email account, and turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA).
First, verify the alert safely
Do not use a link or phone number in an unexpected message to investigate or “fix” an account. Open the provider’s known app or type its official website address yourself. Pause before acting on urgent messages asking you to click, open an attachment, or call a number; those may be phishing attempts. Microsoft’s account-protection guidance recommends caution with suspicious messages.

You can use Have I Been Pwned to check whether an email address appears in known breach data. A match is an exposure lookup, not evidence that an attacker can currently access the account. No match also cannot prove that your information has never been exposed.
If only your email address was exposed
An exposed address alone does not mean you need to abandon it or change it. Since email addresses are commonly used as sign-in names, criminals may use yours to try logging in, send convincing phishing messages, or target you with spam. Microsoft explains these risks.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Check the accounts where that address is your username.
- Make sure each account has its own strong password and turn on MFA wherever it is available.
- Pay attention to unexpected password-reset requests, sign-in alerts, or messages asking you to verify account details.
If a password was exposed
Change the password on the affected service promptly. Change it anywhere else you reused it, including accounts where you used a similar variation. Start with your main email account: access to it may let someone intercept password-reset messages for other services. Use a different password for every account. The FTC’s guidance on protecting personal information recommends strong passwords and notes that password-management software can help create and keep track of them.
A password manager can make it easier to maintain unique credentials, but using one does not secure an account whose password is already exposed. Change reused passwords and complete the relevant account-security steps.

If you suspect the device you use to access an account may contain malware, use trusted security software and follow the provider’s recovery instructions. For a potentially compromised Microsoft account, Microsoft’s compromised-account guidance recommends running a full, up-to-date scan before changing the password. That is Microsoft’s advice for that situation, not a universal prerequisite for responding to every breach alert.

Secure your email account and check for lingering access
If you see unfamiliar activity or believe someone signed in, change the account password to a unique one, enable MFA, and inspect both recent activity and signed-in devices. Review security events, recovery details, connected apps, and—if you use Gmail—forwarding and filters. Google’s compromised-account guidance covers these checks.

- Remove devices, sessions, or connected apps you do not recognize.
- Confirm that recovery phone numbers and email addresses belong to you.
- Check that mail is not being forwarded unexpectedly and that filters are not hiding or diverting messages.
If your password no longer works or your recovery details have changed, use the provider’s official account-recovery process. The FTC advises people who cannot sign in to follow their provider’s recovery instructions; Google and Microsoft also publish account-recovery or sign-in-help guidance.

Turn on MFA wherever the service offers it. A second factor adds a check beyond your password; it does not replace changing an exposed password or reviewing account access. Google describes its 2-Step Verification this way: “That way, if your password is stolen, your account is still secure.” This is Google’s explanation of the added protection for that feature, not a guarantee against every threat. - Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
Where a service and your devices support it, a FIDO/WebAuthn security key is a phishing-resistant option. CISA describes FIDO/WebAuthn as the only widely available phishing-resistant authentication. Before choosing a key, check that your account supports security-key sign-in and that your device is compatible. Keep a backup recovery method available so losing the key does not lock you out. CISA’s MFA guidance explains the distinction between phishing-resistant methods and MFA generally.

Watch for signs of misuse
Look for messages you did not send, missing email, unfamiliar account changes, unexpected transactions, or signs that your identity has been used. If financial accounts or payment details may be affected, contact your bank. If identity information may have been misused, contact the relevant official authority. Google specifically advises contacting a bank or local authorities when saved banking, tax, passport, or identity information may be involved. Google’s compromised-account guidance includes these steps.
