Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf your electric utility account may have been exposed, first check the notice to see exactly what information was involved, then verify the incident with the utility through an official contact channel. The right next steps depend on the data exposed: a compromised password calls for account security, while an exposed Social Security number may warrant credit protections. Exposure alone does not mean someone has stolen your identity.
1. Read the breach notice and identify what was exposed
Start with the utility’s notice. Look for the incident dates, the information that may have been involved, steps the utility has taken, any services offered to affected customers, and contact details for reliable updates. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) directs people to IdentityTheft.gov’s data-breach guidance, which recommends responses based on the kind of information exposed.

A notice about contact details is not the same as a notice about a password, payment information, or Social Security number. Do not assume information was exposed unless the notice or utility confirms it. If the notice is unclear, ask the utility which data fields may have been involved and whether you need to take any account-specific steps.

Contact the utility using the phone number printed on your bill or the company’s official website or app. Do not rely on a phone number or link in an unexpected email, text, or call. Ask the utility to confirm the incident, explain what information was involved, and tell you how to protect the account.

If your password may have been exposed
- Open the utility’s official website or app directly and change the password there.
- Change the password anywhere else you reused it. A password exposed on one service can put other accounts at risk if it was reused.
- Choose a strong, unique password. Turn on an additional sign-in factor, such as a one-time passcode or authenticator app, if the utility offers it.
Ask the utility whether it can review recent account activity or add available safeguards. The controls vary by provider, so confirm what your utility actually supports.
3. Match your response to the information involved
If your Social Security number was exposed
Review your free credit reports for accounts or activity you do not recognize, and use any free response service included in the utility’s notice. The FTC’s data-breach guidance recommends considering a fraud alert or credit freeze when a Social Security number is exposed.

- Protect Your Privacy Effectively: you can use this identity protection roller stamp to flip personal information in under 2 seconds and save time and effort, effectively hiding and protecting your personal information, such as phone numbers, social security numbers, bank statements, shipping addresses, tax documents, data, billing addresses and many more

- Refillable and Long Term Use: this confidential stamp can cover a total length of up to 100 meter/ 109 yards, approximately 3,200 prints are covered, pattern width is about 0.78 inches; When ink runs out, you can refill the security stamp with ink
- Easy to Use: just continuous roll the address blocker roller stamp to conceal information, and roll on a second layer for maximum protection, works on paper, envelopes, folders, address labels, etc., please note that may not work on smooth surfaces
- How to Refill the Ink: there are 4 pieces of ID stamp refills, each is about 1.5 ml, you just need to unscrew the cap of the ink bottle (not disposable, you can close the cap for next time of use), then insert it into the hole on the side of the stamp, then turn it upside down, about 5 minutes later, the most of the ink will be replenished to the security roller stamp
A credit freeze is free and does not affect your credit score. It makes it harder for someone to open a new credit account in your name, but it does not secure your utility login. When you apply for credit, a lender generally needs access to your credit report, so you may need to temporarily lift the freeze. FTC guidance also says you can request a freeze even if your information has not been exposed or misused.
If another type of information was exposed
Follow the utility’s instructions for the specific data involved and ask what steps, if any, apply to your account. Do not assume that credit protections address every kind of exposure: a freeze is aimed at new credit accounts, not utility-account access or billing.

4. Act if someone opened a utility account in your name
A data exposure is not proof that a fraudulent account exists. If you discover that someone used your identity to obtain utility service, IdentityTheft.gov advises you to contact the provider, explain the identity theft, ask it to close the account, and contact your state Public Utility Commission for additional help.
Keep a record of whom you contact, when you spoke, what was agreed, and any reference numbers. Save copies of notices, bills, letters, and other correspondence. IdentityTheft.gov also describes the National Consumer Telecom & Utilities Exchange (NCTUE) report as covering telecommunications, pay-TV, and utility accounts reported by exchange members. It is a possible route for investigating accounts included in that report; it does not establish that every electric utility reports there.

5. Watch for utility impersonation scams
A breach notice can make a follow-up message that mentions your utility seem convincing. The FTC warns that an unexpected call, text, email, or in-person visit claiming your gas, electric, or water service will be shut off unless you pay is a scam. Check balances, pending payments, and billing questions through the number on your bill or the utility’s official website. See the FTC’s guidance on scammers pretending to be your utility company.
