For anxiety, neither THC nor over-the-counter CBD is established as a reliable treatment. THC causes the cannabis-associated high and can provoke anxiety or panic; CBD may ease symptoms in some short-term studies, but that evidence is uncertain and does not establish that retail products work. Their effects, risks and legal status differ.
THC vs. CBD for anxiety: how do their effects differ?
THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the intoxicating component of cannabis associated with a “high.” CBD (cannabidiol) does not cause that THC-associated high, but “non-intoxicating” does not mean harmless or proven effective. A person’s response to THC can vary with dose and context, and anxiety-provoking effects are a concern.

| Question | THC | CBD |
|---|---|---|
| Intoxicating? | Yes; it causes the cannabis-associated high. | It does not cause the THC-associated high. |
| What does the anxiety evidence suggest? | Findings on symptoms are mixed; evidence about effects and safety is very uncertain. | Some studies suggest short-term symptom improvement, but certainty is low and results do not establish retail CBD as treatment. |
| Key concerns | May worsen anxiety or trigger panic; clinical trials also report dose-dependent adverse events. | Can cause side effects, interact with medicines, and vary in actual contents or contain contaminants. |
Evidence descriptions in the table reflect the Systematically Testing the Evidence on Marijuana Project’s living review of adults diagnosed with anxiety or mood disorders, whose surveillance report was published in July 2026.

Possibly for some symptoms in some circumstances, but it has not been shown to be a dependable anxiety treatment. The living review identified five studies of anxiety disorders. Its low- or no-THC CBD symptom-control findings came from three randomized controlled trials and one quasi-experimental study, with 659 participants in total. The review graded this evidence as low certainty because of risk of bias and limited populations.

- MEETS OFFICIAL STANDARD CUTOFF: This at-home thc drug test kit detects down to 50 ng/mL threshold. For over-the-counter use. Using the same detection method as lab screening weed drug test.
- CERTIFIED AND TRUSTED TEST: Detects cannabinoids(THC) metabolites in urine up to 5+ days after consumption. The thc test kit complies with all the applicable regulations.
- EASY TO USE AND FAST RESULTS: Simply immerse the test into urine for 10 seconds. Bold and solid lines appear instantly. Two lines are present indicate a negative result; if only the control line appears, it's positive.
- Track Your THC Detox: Utilize this home THC testing kit to gauge the presence of THC in urine. Regular testing can help you observe the decrease in THC levels. Walk you through a detox program, preparing to pass a pre-employment screening, or just random testing.
- Customer Usage Advisory: This kit is designed to test with human urine only. Testing with any other substance, such as water, is very likely to produce incorrect outcomes. Ensure you use it correctly to pass the test and flush THC out of your system effectively.
A separate 2025 systematic review examined 49 controlled studies across 15 countries and several mental-health diagnoses. It found that higher CBD doses were most consistently followed by some acute anxiety relief. Across the diagnoses included, however, it found no long-lasting medicinal effects or improvement. That broad result is not proof that CBD treats every anxiety disorder, nor that a high dose is suitable or safe for an individual.
Older findings illustrate why a research result should not be turned into consumer dosing advice. A 2017 National Academies report described one public-speaking study in social anxiety involving a single 600 mg CBD dose in 24 participants. It noted design weaknesses and uncertainty about whether the result applied to other anxiety disorders. That figure describes one study; it is not a recommended dose.

- CREDIBLE: This test is CLIA Waived for home or over the counter (OTC) use, utilizes the same technology as lab screening tests, and its results are accepted in most professional and clinical settings.
- COMPREHENSIVE: This lab-grade test can detect 14 drugs simultaneously: Buprenorphine (BUP), Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), Opiates (OPI - 2000 ng/mL cut-off level), Amphetamine (AMP), Barbiturates (BAR), Benzodiazepines (BZO), Cocaine (COC), Methamphetamine (MET), Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), Methadone (MTD), Oxycodone (OXY), Phencyclidine (PCP), Propoxyphene (PPX), and Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA).
- ACCURATE: More than 99% accurate, it uses lab-recommended cutoff levels for each drug and includes a temperature strip to verify the temperature of the fresh sample for Specimen Validity Testing.
- EASY TO USE: To use, simply remove the cap, collect urine in the test cup, wait a FULL 5 minutes, and then read the result; disposable plastic gloves are included, a negative result shows two lines, a positive result shows only the control line, a faint test line still means negative, and results should not be read after 5 minutes.
Can THC make anxiety worse?
Yes. THC may increase anxiety or provoke panic, and the likelihood or intensity can depend on dose and the person’s circumstances. A 2022 review characterized recent evidence as consistently supporting anxiety-provoking effects from administered THC, although those effects may be blunted in regular users. The 2025 review also found dose-dependent adverse events associated with THC in clinical trials.
Some people report short-term relief, but subjective relief does not establish that THC treats an anxiety disorder or improves outcomes over time. The National Academies’ 2017 report also noted observational evidence associating daily cannabis use with increased anxiety symptoms. An association does not by itself establish that cannabis caused the symptoms.

What are the risks of CBD for anxiety?
CBD can cause sleepiness, diarrhea, decreased appetite, and mood changes such as irritability or agitation. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also warns of possible liver injury and interactions that can raise or lower the effects of other medicines.
Combining CBD with alcohol or medicines that slow brain activity—including some medicines used for anxiety, panic, stress or sleep disorders—can increase sedation and drowsiness and lead to injury. Do not stop, change or combine medicines on your own. The FDA’s guidance is: “Consumer use of any CBD products should always be discussed with a healthcare provider.” A clinician or pharmacist can review your medicines and circumstances.

Product contents are another concern. FDA testing has found products that did not contain the CBD levels claimed on the label, and the agency is investigating potential contaminants including pesticides, heavy metals and THC. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health also notes that over-the-counter products may contain more or less CBD than labeled and may contain contaminants. “Hemp-derived” or “natural” is not a guarantee of verified contents or effectiveness.

In the United States, FDA says it has approved one prescription CBD product for specified seizure disorders and has not approved other CBD products. Consumer CBD products are not FDA-approved anxiety treatments. The agency says unapproved CBD products marketed with therapeutic claims have not been evaluated for whether they treat disease effectively, what dose is appropriate, how they interact with drugs or foods, or whether they have dangerous side effects.
FDA also states that, under current U.S. federal law, marketing CBD by adding it to food or labeling it a dietary supplement is illegal. This describes the agency’s U.S. position; it does not determine the law in other countries, and rules may differ by jurisdiction.
Quick Recap
What to do if you are considering THC or CBD
- Talk with a healthcare professional before using CBD, especially if you take anxiety, sleep or other medicines, or use alcohol.
- Do not treat a study dose, a product label or a THC-to-CBD ratio as an established anxiety regimen. The available evidence does not establish an individual product or dose.
- If anxiety is persistent or severe, seek evidence-based care rather than relying on a cannabinoid product. The living review identifies uncertainty about safety and functioning and calls for stronger randomized studies.
