If you suspect a wallet or DeFi account has been compromised, stop interacting with suspicious sites, work out whether the exposure is a recovery phrase, token approval, signature, device, or hosted-account login, and take the response that matches it. If a private key or recovery phrase may be exposed, treat that wallet as compromised: a new wallet and new phrase—not just revoking an approval—are needed to protect any assets you can still move.
First, confirm what happened and stop making it worse
An unfamiliar transaction is not automatically unauthorized. Check its date and time, recipient address, dapp, and amount or value in a block explorer. MetaMask recommends checking these details before concluding that an account was drained; a transaction may be unfamiliar because of an interaction or transfer you do not recognize at first glance.

If a site, message, or wallet prompt now seems suspicious, do not connect to it again, sign another request, or share a recovery phrase, private key, password, or one-time code. Reach wallet, exchange, and other provider support through a channel you verify independently—not a phone number or link supplied by an unsolicited caller or message.

Different incidents require different containment. Use this guide to identify what the relevant action can—and cannot—address.

If a recovery phrase or private key may be exposed
Assume anyone who obtained the phrase or key may control the wallet and accounts derived from that phrase. Do not keep using the old wallet as though a password change or approval revocation restored its security.
- Set up a genuinely new wallet with a new recovery phrase on another trusted device or a separate browser profile. Do not import the old phrase into it.
- If the old wallet was linked to a Google or Apple account that may also be compromised, do not use that account to create or access the replacement wallet.
- If you can do so safely, move the remaining assets to the new wallet. MetaMask warns that a sweeper script may take gas sent to a compromised account immediately, so do not blindly send gas to the old address to enable a transfer.
- After any move, stop using the old wallet and other accounts derived from the compromised phrase.
If you cannot move assets without putting more funds at risk, do not send extra money simply to test a transfer or pay for gas without understanding the risk. Preserve the transaction and wallet details for reporting.

If the likely problem is an approval or signature
Review and revoke a token approval
A token approval is permission for a dapp or contract to move a specified kind and amount of token. Use a wallet or provider permissions interface that you reach independently, review the authorization, and revoke permissions you do not trust. MetaMask and Ledger explain approval management in their guidance; follow the current instructions for the wallet and network involved.

Revoking a permission can block that particular authorization, but it cannot restore funds already transferred. It also cannot make a wallet safe if its recovery phrase or private key was exposed.

Treat signatures as a separate risk
Some signatures can authorize token spending without a network fee. Uniswap Labs describes Permit2-related flows as one example. Because a signature may not appear like an ordinary paid on-chain transaction, checking visible approvals alone may not settle whether a signature request was harmful. Do not sign further requests from the suspected site; consult the relevant wallet or protocol’s current official directions.
Contain a device or hosted-account compromise
Malware, phishing, a fake wallet extension, an exposed secret, an excessive contract permission, and a compromised provider login are different possible causes. If a computer or browser may be involved, avoid using it to create a replacement wallet or enter a new recovery phrase until you have addressed the suspected device risk. Review browser history and scan the computer as MetaMask advises.

For an exchange, custodial wallet, or other hosted account, contact the provider through a verified official channel. Change the password and enable alerts, and tell the provider which activity you believe was unauthorized. Never give an unsolicited caller or message your password, phrase, private key, or one-time code.

Keep a record before account history or messages disappear. Save transaction hashes, timestamps, amounts or values, sending and receiving addresses, and the names of any exchange, wallet provider, or other service involved. Keep relevant messages and site details as well.
In the United States, FBI guidance asks victims to report promptly to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or contact a local FBI field office, and to provide available transaction information. The FTC also provides consumer guidance on cryptocurrency losses. Outside the United States, use the appropriate local law-enforcement and consumer-protection reporting routes and notify affected wallet, exchange, and financial-service providers. Reporting can help document and investigate an incident; it does not guarantee that funds will be recovered.
What recovery can—and cannot—mean
For its self-custodial service, MetaMask says, “Unfortunately, transactions cannot be reversed, nor missing funds restored.” That describes the limits of MetaMask’s service; it is not a guarantee about every provider or a ruling on every legal outcome. A self-custody provider generally cannot reverse an on-chain transfer through customer support. A custodial provider may have account-security steps to take, so contact it promptly if its hosted account is involved.
The FBI advises victims to stop sending money and not pay additional fees or taxes to withdraw funds or pay a service claiming it can recover cryptocurrency. The FTC notes that crypto transfers can be difficult to recover and do not have the same legal protections as card payments. Treat any demand for more money as a serious warning sign, not as proof that recovery is underway.
