Tell me what happened.” Find out whether your child missed a plan made in a group chat, feels shut out of shared jokes, or has a broader sense of not belonging. Then work together on what might help—whether that means making time with a friend, talking with school, or revisiting how your family handles communication.
Listen first, then get specific
Feeling excluded can hurt even when a parent believes the family’s social-media boundary is the right choice. A calm response helps your child feel taken seriously and makes it easier to understand what is actually happening. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises parents to acknowledge how difficult peer problems feel and help a child think through what to do next.

Try open questions such as:
- “What happened today?”
- “When do you feel most out of the loop?”
- “Was there a plan or conversation you couldn’t join?”
- “Is there someone you would like to spend more time with?”
Listen before explaining why your family has its current rules. You might say, “I can see why that would feel bad. I’m glad you told me, and we’ll figure out what could help.”
Work out what kind of exclusion is happening
Ask for a recent, concrete example rather than assuming the cause. A child may have missed an invitation shared in a chat, be dealing with a short-lived disagreement, or be experiencing a repeated pattern of rejection. Those situations call for different responses; do not assume every conflict is bullying or that social media access would solve it.

Notice whether the situation recurs, who is involved, and whether your child can still connect with peers in other settings. If the pattern seems persistent, jot down specific incidents and speak with the teacher. Ask what staff observe during less-structured parts of the day, such as lunch and recess, as well as in class. AAP recommends involving the teacher when rejection appears to be a pattern.
Make room for connection that fits your child
Help your child find comfortable ways to spend time with peers, without making every activity a project to “fix” them. Ask what they would actually enjoy, then offer choices. Depending on their interests, possibilities include:

- Inviting one classmate over or suggesting a low-pressure activity together.
- Trying a school or community club, sport, arts or music group, or religious youth group.
- Taking part in a volunteering activity suited to their age and interests.
The AAP identifies groups and activities like these as ways children can develop connection and belonging. When comparing options, consider whether your child wants to participate, how regularly the group meets, accessibility and cost, where it takes place, and how it is supervised. Leave room for your child to explore rather than insisting on an activity chosen by an adult.

Talk about the social-media boundary without turning it into a fight
If your child says social media is the price of admission to friendship, ask what they think they are missing and listen before debating. Their concern might be practical—plans are being made in a chat—or emotional, such as feeling invisible when classmates share things online. A conversation can take both seriously without assuming an app is the answer.
Explore ways to keep in touch or coordinate plans that fit your family’s rules, including in-person invitations or other family-approved, age-appropriate communication channels. For tweens and teens, discuss what is helping or hurting and involve them in decisions about family media boundaries and safety. AAP guidance for young teens recommends open-minded questions and regular check-ins about peer relationships online and offline; it describes ages 10–14 as a stage when fitting in and peer relationships can feel especially intense.

Try to avoid shaming your child, threatening them, or making the conversation a contest over whether “everyone else” has an account. If you are considering a particular platform, check its current terms and the rules that apply where you live rather than treating any one age limit as a universal legal rule.

Know when to bring in more help
Take it seriously if exclusion keeps happening, your child becomes increasingly withdrawn, or they do not want to go to school. Start with the teacher and ask what is happening across the school day, including at lunch and recess. If distress continues or you are concerned about your child’s mood or development, talk with their pediatrician. This is general parenting guidance, not a diagnosis; a school or health professional can help assess the situation in context.

A book about friendship or conflict can also give a younger child an easy way to start talking, but it is a conversation aid, not a substitute for listening to their account.
