If you can’t access your bank app or website, contact the bank through a number or channel you already trust, check whether payments are still processing, and try another available way to bank. An outage alone does not prove that your account was hacked. Treat suspicious transactions or login alerts as a separate, urgent security issue.
What to do first when your bank’s app or website is down
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) notes that “System outages or technology glitches can happen.” Its guidance recommends contacting your bank and checking what other ways to access your account remain available.

- Contact the bank through a known channel. Call the number printed on the back of your bank card or on an account statement, or use the bank’s established website, app, or a branch. Ask whether it has confirmed an outage, which services are affected, and what channels are working. Don’t rely on a phone number or link in an unsolicited outage message. CFPB bank-outage guidance.
- Try another way to complete the task. Depending on your bank and what is operational, alternatives may include phone banking or its automated phone system, an ATM, a branch, an alternate bank app, or a check. Confirm that a channel can handle what you need—such as withdrawing cash, making a transfer, or paying a bill—before counting on it. An incident affecting the bank or a payment network may disrupt more than one method.
- Check scheduled and outgoing payments. Ask whether automatic payments and withdrawals are still processing. If a payment will not go through, use another available method if you can. Keep a record of the due date, your attempts to pay, and any notices you receive.
- Ask about fees caused by the outage. If a failed payment or workaround leads to a late, overdraft, or insufficient-funds fee, explain what happened and ask the bank to reverse or credit it. The CFPB says you can ask; the bank is not guaranteed to grant the request.
How to tell an outage from a compromised account
A bank service outage and an account takeover are different possibilities. A service outage by itself does not show that someone accessed your personal data or money. However, an outage is a good reason to monitor your account through available alerts, statements, or other channels.

- Transactions you did not make.
- An unexpected password-reset message.
- Being unable to log in even though your credentials are correct.
- A login alert showing an unfamiliar time, location, or device.
- An alert from the bank or service provider about suspicious activity.
- Transactions being declined despite sufficient funds.
Being unable to log in is a warning sign, but on its own it cannot distinguish an account takeover from a broader service outage. Consider it alongside other evidence, such as unknown transactions or an unfamiliar login alert. See the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s mobile-banking security guidance.
What to do if you see signs of account compromise
- Contact your bank immediately. Report suspected unauthorised access or transactions and follow the bank’s instructions for securing the account or freezing affected cards. If suspicious activity is already visible through an alert, statement, or another channel, don’t wait for the app to come back.
- Change exposed credentials through a trusted route. Use the bank’s official platform or get help from the bank. Do not use a password-reset link from an unsolicited email or text.
- Change any reused passwords. Update reused credentials on other accounts, especially your email account, which may be used to reset other passwords.
- Review activity and keep a dated record. Check account activity and relevant devices, and note what happened and what steps you took.
Protect yourself from outage-related scams
Scammers may use a service disruption as a pretext for convincing texts, emails, social posts, or calls. Don’t give an unsolicited caller or sender your password, one-time access code, or other login credentials. Instead, call the number on your card or statement, or type the bank’s established website address yourself. Never post account numbers or personal information publicly. The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s online-banking guidance also advises using trusted routes when securing an account.

Keep records and report the incident in the right country
Save outage notices, screenshots, dates and times, payment attempts, messages, call-reference numbers, and records of fees or transactions. Reporting routes depend on where you live; the Australian and UK services below are country-specific, not interchangeable.

- Australia: The Australian Cyber Security Centre directs people to ReportCyber and, where relevant, Scamwatch.
- United Kingdom: The NCSC advises people who have lost money to tell their bank and report the crime to Report Fraud. In Scotland, call Police Scotland on 101.
- United States: The CFPB accepts complaints about checking and savings accounts and other banking services through its online complaint form or by phone at (855) 411-2372. A complaint does not replace promptly contacting your bank about suspected fraud or a pending payment.
What deposit insurance does—and does not—cover in the United States
In its bank-outage guidance, last reviewed December 21, 2023, the CFPB says funds at FDIC-insured banks or NCUA-insured credit unions are protected up to $250,000 per unique account if the institution fails. This is a U.S.-specific statement about insured deposits and institutional failure; it is not a guarantee against every cyber loss and should not be assumed to apply to every financial product or country.
