Can malware come preinstalled on an Android phone?
Malicious or unwanted software can be present on a device, but symptoms alone cannot establish that it was installed before you bought the phone. A harmful app, a compromised system image, and an ordinary software problem are different possibilities. Google lists persistent pop-ups, redirects, unexpected behavior, and security alerts as possible signs to investigate—not proof of preinstallation or intent. Google’s Android malware guidance recommends checking the device and seeking help if signs persist.

What to do if your new Android phone has malware
1. Scan apps with Google Play Protect
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then select Play Protect.
- Check that app scanning is enabled and run a scan.
Play Protect checks apps from Google Play and other sources. When it identifies an app as harmful, it may warn you, disable the app, or remove it. Google’s malware instructions explain how to use the feature. A clean scan is useful, but it is not a forensic guarantee that the Android system software or firmware is trustworthy.

2. Install available Android and security updates
In Settings, look for Android system updates, security updates, and Google Play system updates. The labels and menu locations vary by phone and Android version; use the device’s Settings search if needed. Install updates offered for your device, then check again after it restarts. Google includes update checks in its malware-removal guidance.

3. Review installed apps and permissions
Look through the installed-app list for anything you do not recognize or trust. Uninstall suspicious apps when Android allows it, and review permissions for apps you keep. If the behavior seems tied to an ordinary downloaded app, restarting in safe mode can help determine whether a third-party app is involved. The way to enter safe mode varies by phone; consult the manufacturer’s instructions. Safe mode can help isolate apps, but it does not scan or verify system firmware. Google recommends removing apps you do not trust, and its safe-mode guidance describes using the mode to troubleshoot app problems.
4. Check and secure your accounts from a trusted device
Use a device you trust to open Google Account Security Checkup and review alerts and account access. If you have reason to think a password or other credential was exposed, change it from that trusted device and review which devices and apps can access the account. Google specifically recommends Security Checkup as part of its Android malware instructions.

5. Consider a factory reset if the problem continues
A factory reset may be appropriate when symptoms persist after app and update checks, but it erases local data. Before resetting, confirm you know the Google Account credentials needed to set the phone up again and preserve essential personal files. Avoid restoring all apps or a full configuration backup if it could reinstall the suspicious app or settings. Google’s factory-reset guidance covers the reset process and its data consequences.

Escalate if the suspected software appears built into Android, returns after a reset, or the phone’s certification or software state raises concern. Google advises asking the device maker for help when malware signs persist. Google’s malware-removal guidance states: “If you find signs of malware, you might need to reset your Android device or ask the company that made your device for help.” Keep the packaging, order records, and screenshots of alerts or warnings to document the issue when contacting support.

Why app scanning and device certification are different
Play Protect’s app-scanning feature checks apps; Google Play Protect certification is a separate status for a device. An uncertified device may not receive Android or app updates and may not be secure, but certification status alone does not diagnose malware. Check the status in the Play Store under your profile menu and Settings, then About. Google’s certification guidance explains what the status means.
A harmful app may be removable, while compromised system software is a different problem. Uninstalling an app or resetting user data may not correct an issue in the system image. For uncertified or modified devices, Google’s device restoration guidance says returning to the factory state may require the original manufacturer-signed Android build and recommends consulting the maker’s support site. Do not unlock the bootloader, root the phone, install a random cleaner, or flash an image from an unofficial site as a first response.

When to keep, restore, return, or replace the phone
If the maker cannot resolve the concern, base the decision on evidence specific to your device and purchase:

- Ask the manufacturer about restoration if the symptoms return after reset or seem tied to system software. Look for a device-specific, signed restore method rather than a generic image.
- Consider a return or exchange if the seller’s terms allow it and the manufacturer cannot provide a credible fix. The applicable terms depend on the seller, purchase, and jurisdiction.
- Weigh ongoing update support if deciding whether to continue using or replace the device; update availability and restoration methods depend on the model and region.
There is no established statistic in the cited official guidance for how often Android phones ship with malware, or for the success rate of these troubleshooting steps. Avoid treating a general malware figure as evidence about a particular handset.
