If you think someone has accessed your Airbnb, Uber, or Google account, use the service’s official app or type its address yourself. If you can still sign in, set a new, unique password and check recent activity, devices, recovery details, and payment information. If you’re locked out, use the provider’s official recovery flow. Then secure the email account used for resets and change any passwords reused elsewhere.
These steps reflect official help guidance available on October 7, 2026. Menus and recovery options can change or vary by region. A password change alone does not confirm that an account is secure: check for altered recovery details and unfamiliar active devices, too.

What to do first if an account may be compromised
- Open the service safely. Use its official app or enter its known official address yourself. Avoid signing in through an unexpected email, text, or call link, and never give a one-time verification code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- If you still have access, change the password. Make it unique to that account. Check the account’s email address, phone number, recovery methods, recent activity, devices, and payment details for changes you did not make.
- If you are locked out, start the official recovery flow. Do not rely on a link or phone number supplied in an unsolicited message. Secure the email account that receives password-reset messages as well; it may be able to receive reset links.
- Change reused passwords elsewhere. If you used the compromised password on another service, replace it there with a unique one. Also check accounts that use the affected email address for contact or sign-in.
- Report suspicious transactions. Contact the service and your payment provider about charges you do not recognize. If Google account information may have been used for financial or identity misuse, Google advises contacting your bank or local authorities.
- After access is restored, strengthen sign-in protection. Turn on available stronger authentication and review devices and recovery details again.
This is a practical sequence drawn from the services’ separate guidance, not a single recovery procedure shared by Airbnb, Google, and Uber. The providers’ help pages describe recommended steps, not guaranteed account restoration or response times.

How to tell whether your account may have been used
Airbnb
Airbnb’s unauthorized-access guidance recommends reviewing the account for changes to contact details, profile photos, listings, payout methods, and reservations, as well as unfamiliar logins. Its device-history page lists the browser or device, time, and location; a login notification for a device you do not recognize is a reason to check the account and change its password. See Airbnb’s unauthorized account access guidance and instructions for reviewing device history.

Google lists unfamiliar activity, changed passwords or recovery details, unknown devices, security settings you did not change, and suspicious activity in Google products as possible signs someone else is using the account. Review Recent security events and Your devices if you can sign in. Google’s guidance for a hacked or compromised Google Account explains what to check and how to begin recovery.
Uber
Possible signs include trip requests or completed trips you did not make, calls or texts about pickups you did not request, unfamiliar receipts or charges, unauthorized account or payment-profile changes, and a password or email change you do not recognize. Uber lists these signs in its rider account-compromise guidance.

How to secure or recover an Airbnb account
- Review recent logins. In Airbnb, go to Account > Login & security > Device history to inspect the listed devices, times, and locations.
- Check account changes. Use Airbnb’s account-review flow to check contact information, profile photos, listings, payout methods, and reservations. If something is wrong, Airbnb says it can help explain what changed and how to undo it.
- Change the password and any reused copies. If you suspect the Airbnb password was exposed and used elsewhere, change it on those services as soon as possible.
- Contact Airbnb through its official help options if you need assistance. Airbnb’s support article lists messaging or chat and the number +1-415-800-5959. If you are concerned about an incoming call claiming to be Airbnb, its guidance recommends hanging up and calling that listed number back. This is Airbnb’s published contact guidance; it should not be treated as a Google or Uber number or assumed to apply outside the context Airbnb publishes.
For prevention, Airbnb recommends using a unique password, keeping software up to date, using trusted antivirus, and entering airbnb.com directly instead of following a suspicious login link. It also advises keeping communication and payment on Airbnb’s platform, where the service can better assist if a problem occurs. See Airbnb’s account security guidance.
How to secure or recover a Google account
- If you can sign in, review security activity and devices. Check Recent security events and Your devices; investigate or remove anything unfamiliar.
- Correct settings you did not change. Review your recovery phone and email, alternate email, 2-Step Verification methods, app access, and other security settings.
- Change related passwords. Change the Google password and any reused password. Also review accounts that use your Google address for contact or sign-in, and accounts whose passwords are saved in your Google Account.
- If you cannot sign in, use Google Account recovery. Answer the recovery questions as accurately as possible. Start at Google’s account recovery page; recovery depends on the verification details available for your account.
- Once access is secure, turn on 2-Step Verification. Google lists a phone, security key, or printed code as possible second factors. A security key can strengthen sign-in protection, but it does not recover an account you are already locked out of.
- Respond to possible information misuse. If the account contained bank or government information, or identity misuse seems possible, Google advises contacting your bank or local authorities. If suspicious activity points to harmful software, Google advises removing it; a compromised account alone does not establish that malware was involved.
How to secure or recover an Uber account
- If you can sign in, reset the password in the app. Uber’s rider instructions give this path: App menu > Help > I can’t sign in or request a ride > I forgot my password. Choose a new, unique password.
- If you cannot sign in, use Uber’s hacked-account support flow. Uber asks for details to verify your identity and investigate. Use its official rider help page to begin.
- Handle unfamiliar charges through the appropriate route. Report suspicious account activity to Uber. If a bank charge does not appear in your Uber account, Uber points riders to a separate unrecognized-charge process through its help guidance.
What to check after changing a password
- Confirm the account’s recovery email and phone number still belong to you.
- Review recent events and signed-in devices, and remove or investigate unfamiliar access using the service’s controls.
- Check payment methods, payout details, reservations, listings, trips, and other account changes relevant to the service.
- Change the old password anywhere else it was reused; prioritize email and accounts connected to the affected service.
- Turn on available stronger sign-in protection after you have regained control.
- Report transactions you do not recognize to both the service and your payment provider.
Airbnb recommends a password manager as a way to organize unique passwords. A FIDO2-compatible security key is one optional Google 2-Step Verification factor, but compatibility and availability depend on the account and device. Neither a password manager nor a security key reverses unauthorized changes or replaces account recovery.
