What Xbox confirms—and what it does not
Xbox Wire’s FAQ, published on November 12, 2020, says Series X can play DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs, and that the Blu-ray Player app must be downloaded from the console’s Store for movie-disc playback. Read the Xbox Wire FAQ.

That FAQ does not say whether the app needs an internet connection the first time it launches, or whether every disc will play offline after installation. So the available official information does not establish either that internet is always required or that offline playback is guaranteed.

Prepare and test the console before going offline
- While connected, download the Blu-ray Player app. Open the console’s Store, find the Blu-ray Player app, and download it. Xbox identifies this app as necessary for movie-disc playback.
- Insert the movie disc you intend to watch and try playing it online. This lets you check that the disc and app work together before internet access is unavailable.
- Disconnect the console from the network and try the same disc again. Treat this as a practical test, not a guarantee: the available Xbox FAQ does not establish that success applies to other discs, later app versions, or every region.
- If it fails offline, reconnect if possible. Check for an app update or consult Xbox Support’s DVD and Blu-ray setup and disc and Blu-ray settings pages. Their detailed instructions could not be verified here, so no particular setting or fix can be confirmed.
Make sure your Xbox has a disc drive
The Series X product page lists an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc player as a console feature. See the Xbox Series X product page. This applies to the disc-drive-equipped Series X; it does not mean every Xbox Series console can accept movie discs.
